Buffalo Nickels and Friends

Do you have a nickel and want to find out its value? Leave a comment/question and I will do my best to find out the price and history for you.

Here is a sample of the 5 different nickels I've found in my change in the last month.

IMG_0205

They are a "Indian Head" or "Buffalo" nickel minted from 1913-1938, a Jefferson nickel minted from 1938-2003, a Louisiana Purchase/Peace Medal nickel minted early-2004, a Lewis and Clark/Keelboat nickel minted mid-2004 and a "New Buffalo" nickel minted early-2005.

Yes, a 1913 Liberty Nickel(not pictured) did sell for $3,737,500 but only five were known to exist. The most valuable of each non-error* type in low grades are as follows. 1913S v.2** Buffalo at $340.00, 1939D Jefferson at $10.00 and only $0.25 for all three newer ones.

IMG_0204

Heres the stats for the five coins pictured....
Year: 1921? I'm unsure if it's a S mint mark or not.
Metal: 75% copper 25% nickel
Mintage: 10,663,000 or 1,557,000 for S mint
Value: G-4 $4.00 or $75.00 for S mint (a worn S mint mark would bring down the value)

Year: 1955D
Metal: 75% copper 25% nickel
Mintage: 74,464,100
Value: MS-60 $0.50

Year: 2004P/Keelboat
Metal: 75% copper 25% nickel
Mintage: 366,720,000
Value: MS-63 $0.25

Year: 2004D/Peace Medal
Metal: 75% copper 25% nickel
Mintage: 372,000,000
Value: MS-63 $0.25

Year: 2005D/American Bison
Metal: 75% copper 25% nickel
Mintage: 487,680,000
Value: MS-63 $0.25

Sidenote:
I switched to my camera for these images they came out pretty detailed, but dark, not Photoshopped in any way. When you enlarge the image and zoom in you can see every nick and scratch, I'll probably stick with the camera***.

Footnotes:
*
error coins exist among all coins and raise the value in most cases, these errors are often small and extremely rare, in this instance I left out error-coins value
** v.2 refers to a second variety of a coin that was made on purpose not a error, in this case it is the Bison on the reverse is standing on plain ground as opposed to a raise mound/v.1 worth only $38 not $325
***I didn't stick with the camera.

161 dollars worth, for Comments/Questions click here.:

Hey Manny me again. I have a buffalo coin 1914S. Great condition. Except for the Liberty. IT's a litttle LITTLE lITTTTTTTTTTTTTLE bit blurry on the right side. and I have 2 jefferson coins (one 1995 and one 1946 with the edges pulled in a little.)

btw.. GREAT BLOGG!! Whenever my dad comes home after buying something with change, I ask him if he had anything good that I can trade normal change for. (so far I got a 2007 olympic quarter!)

Man said...

1914S Nickel. Great condition.
About $140.00 in about-uncirculated, this is a great coin and even in low grades it has a $20.00 value.

2 Jefferson coins (one 1995 and one 1946 with the edges pulled in a little.)
Slightly off center does not bring in any extra value.
1946 about $0.25
1995 about $0.05

HI I have a coin, about the size of a quarter. I has a bull with it's head down and 5P written above on one side , a harp and the word éIRe on the other. it's from 1974.
Thank you

I cleaned some coins with vinegar because i couldn't see the date and it's a penny from 1956. does this reduce it's value?
also what does the KG stand for on the canadian penny. thx

From Ireland this 5 pence is about $0.10 in extra-fine.

I cleaned some coins with vinegar because i couldn't see the date and it's a penny from 1956. does this reduce it's value?

Yes, but not by much a coin so dirty and unreadable would only be worth $0.03 at most so no big loss.

what does the KG stand for on the canadian penny.
It is the Designer's signature, the person who drew the new reverse design in 1937.
G.E. Kruger-Gray was the artist and designer, KG for short.

i have a nickel made of copper just like a penny how much is that worth????

Man said...

nickel made of copper just like a penny

There are two reasons this may be possible.

1. Sintered meaning it weighs 5 grams and has a thin copper coating. It must be verified by an expert it's about $150.00 in high grade.

2. Struck on Wrong Planchet it would weigh something other than 5 grams. Depending on what it weigh it would average $650.00 in high grade.

Anonymous said...

i have a 1948 no shoulder fold Canadian penny. it is mint condition and very shiny.it says GEORGIVS VI DEI GRATIA REX.how much is it?

Man said...

1948 no shoulder fold Canadian penny. it is mint condition

1948 did not have shoulders so that is not possible.

It does have a variety, if the denticles are small it's about $100.00.

If the denticles are large it's about $30.00.

Shiny means red MS-63.

In the other post I left values for MS-60 Brown.

Understand if they have been cleaned or are not graded then the value will be much less.

Man said...

If you mean U.S. then they average about $200.00.

I don't know what you mean by no shoulder fold.

I purchased two buffalo nickels from my change drawer at work the other day dated 1935 and 1938. It is difficult to read the date on the 1935 so I know its not the greatest of conditions and the 1938has the 9 wore away. Are they worth anything? I also purchased a 1950 quarter. I would have to say its in very good condition for being in circulation. What is the value on this one? Thanks for your help.

Hope

I have an undated buffalo nickel that looks to have been struck on a dime planchet. It is in circulated condition, but most of the writing is legible. Is this as rare and worth as much as it seems?

Man said...

undated buffalo nickel that looks to have been struck on a dime planchet.

This would be very rare and worth about $10,000.00.
But it sounds worn and probably is just so badly worn that it has lost some metal.
If an error it would weigh about 2.50 grams.
If normal it would weigh about 5.00 grams.

If weighing it doesn't help then have a good jeweler test if it is silver or nickel.
Silver means it's an error.

Thank you for your reply, Man!

Since this coin is much thinner than the other buffalo nickels I have, and is completely rimless, I have a strong feeling we found a winner. Will keep you updated on our research.

Hi,
I need to ask about 3 kickels I have:

1981 P the front is shifted to the left and in god we trust is cut in half.

1972 D when flipped over is twisted about 10degs.

1993 D which is miss metal on both right and left side of the front and on the top of the back. You can still read all the writing on both sides.

Thanks

Nickels

1981 P the front is shifted to the left and in god we trust is cut in half.
This is an Off-Center error it's about $5.00.

1972 D when flipped over is twisted about 10degs.
This is a Rotated Die error it's about $0.50.

1993 D which is miss metal on both right and left side of the front and on the top of the back. You can still read all the writing on both sides.
Possibly a lamination error it's starts at about $10.00 but most found to be damage.

It could be an error but first you need to find out the weight.

If the weight is correct it maybe a sintered error which is hard to prove but these errors start at $15 and can go to hundreds.

Anonymous said...

Thank You for your quick response. I was trying to complete a Jefferson Nickel Archival Collection when I received the first 1938 and not trying for an error collection, I threw it aside and purchased the other. As a 30 year collector, not a professional, I would guess the one at MS-63 and the other at MS-65. I have a few 1952 S coins and discovered that one while deciding on which to put in an album. I would conservatively guess that one at MS-67. It is brilliant, has 5 steps and not a blemish to be found. Another thing that I have noticed is that certain error collectors designate clockwise or counter-clockwise. Do you make that judgement looking at the error side or the obverse? They would be opposite, right? If my high school math still applies today, a 30 degree clockwise rotation is the same as a 330 degree counter-clockwise rotation. Once again, thank you.

Man said...

1952-S in that condition is about $750.00

The obverse is always considered correct so gauging the reverse or error side is where you would put the imaginary 360 degree clock.
And yes high school math wins again, most collectors and dealers just say CW (clockwise) then 30 or 130 or 330.
While others, let's call them rebels, keep the degrees under 180 and then say if it's clockwise or not.

About $0.10 the Doubling is most likely machine doubling but if this is true doubling maybe $10 but I have not seen one at auction so it there are few good references.

Man said...

Yes it sounds like a No Shoulder Fold (NSF) which is the least valuable of all the varieties for the 1953 cent.
There is a NSF with doubling on the date but it is only $2.00 in fine.

Both SF and NSF are common for 1953.
Only for 1955 is NSF rare and valuable.

Man said...

1969-S usa penny how do i know if its the double die one?

There are 2 varieties:
One is very strong and is easy to see.
Second is only seen on the last 9 in the date.

There many with doubling on the mintmark.

Only the first variety has real value.
Here is a great link...

Hi...I have a 1937 buffalo nickel...3 legged version. How should I clean it? It has a brown/red coat all over it. Or...will cleaning it reduce its' value? What is it worth? It is very good condition..no wear whatsoever. Basically...just the coloring is bad. Thank you! Sherry

Never clean it.

If this is a 1937-D 3-legged variety it would $500.00 in low grade but cleaning it will devalue it to $20.00.

If you think this is that rare variety then grading it is all you should do.

If you mean a 1914, 4 over 3 it is about $325.00.

I do not understand why 15 would be engraved, it may be a fake, maybe take a good picture and post it somewhere.

The T and S stamps are considered damage if you are describing it correctly.

About $0.10 just for metal value.

Discoloration is common but if you think it is an Off-Metal error it needs to be weighed.
