With a giant on the front this coin seems almost mythic.The design is like something out of a comic book or cartoon but still classic. I can imagine a giant blowing down cold winds from the north onto a small fishing village.

Yes it marks the precise spot where the coin lost all but metal value. Granted this sixty year old heavily circulated coin has no real extra value. Still I do enjoy older coins there is something about the 50s that always seems cool.

The only change find yesterday but I went to a few stores so I have no idea who gave it to me.

2009 Canada Cross Country Skiing Quarter

Sure the Canadian cent will soon be mostly gone from everyone's change but there still are other Canadian coins to enjoy. Got this shiny but linty coin yesterday it features a cross country skier. This was one of many Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic commemorative coins that were made so none are truly special.

This is one of the rare examples of a dual dated coin where the early date is the true date. Since 2007 they made Olympic coins that had the "vancouver 2010" and it confused some non-collectors. Future dating a coin is not something countries do often. Sure some coins are made before the date on them but they are generally not released until after that specific date.

I guess the Royal Canadian Mint (RCM) are such experts in collectible coins that selling them three years before the event was a good idea. There are colored version of each of these but I never got any. As for now the RCM is making glow in the dark colored coins so imagine what the future holds.

No finds this weekend despite the fact I made an effort to use only cash. So it is back to the vaults with the last of the H countries. That is right, Hungary land of something and Rubik Cubes.

Again this is one of those coins that gives little American-English clues to country of origin. Luckily in the age of Google it is easy to look up. Now before the internet was useful if you did not own a World Coins book you would be lost. Back in those days I would try to look up flags in the World Almanac or even country names, since they were often listed with original spellings. Just trying to match the coin symbols with country symbols is tough.

Not sure what the two characters above the 1 on the reverse means but I am sure it is PG.

The coin has some rust and is a bit scratched. It has plenty of empty field space so the scratches just stand out more.

1941 Nickel

I just noticed that I have not found any foreign coins. Got a few Canadians and of course American but besides that no other country. Very strange I usually have a few by now.

Well until that time I will finally showcase this 1941 nickel. Some of you may notice that I posted about this before but never a solo showcase. So here it goes.

Also found a 1953 wheat cent at the same time but that one has been featured on the main stage before.

Most Ridiculous Reason the Canadian Government Given for Eliminating the Cent:

"Given its declining purchasing value, some Canadians consider the penny more of a nuisance than a useful coin."

-Seeing how I still roll pennies to buy food with I find this hard to believe.

Honestly, none have any big value. I have no good varieties so that is also a minus.

1973 Honduras 50 Centavos

The one and only Honduran coin I own. Not sure where I got it. Also not sure why it is the only one I own.

Lempira is the equivalent of Dollar. So 50 Centavos de Lempira is like saying half dollar. Granted the exchange rate, as of today, has it 50 Centavos de Lempira equal to about 5 U.S. Cents.

PRODUZCAMOS MAS ALIMENTOS means we produce more food. This is a nod to F.A.O. which is the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. Since 1968 they have asked countries to spread the message of better food and farming through coins. F.A.O. coins are very collectible since they are mostly affordable. 600+ coins and medals have been issued including the last Haitian coin I featured two days ago.

1975 Haiti 10 Centimes

First time showing off a Haitian coin. Most are common and worth very little. Still in my change they are hardly seen and when they come in coin lots I always get the most common centimes.

There is so much to say about Haiti itself that the coin seems insignificant. Still recovering from the 2010  earthquake the population has survived but is not yet thriving. Before I get all depressed let me move on to the coin itself.

2003-A $2 Bill, D-A

Three year since my last $2.00 note find. I guess with all the spring holidays happening at once that funny money is being used. The cashier told me that since there is no slot for $2 bills and since they are not rare she tries to pass it on before the store closes. She also hinted that some people refuse the note anticipating they might have issues using them.

Although the series says 2003 the actually printing was in 2006. All the 2003-A notes were printed in the three months from July-September in 2006. This is the second 2003-A note I got and like the other one it was issued to the Cleveland Federal Reserve Bank. I thought I would get a New York federal bank. It is possible NY needed more notes and the Ohio Bank transferred the bills to NY. I say this because it was very crisp except for one slightly folded non-pointy corner.

1996 Guyana 5 Dollars

This was the first of the circulating five dollar coins in Guyana. Today the exchange value hovers around two and a half cents. They eliminated most coins under a dollar. They have circulating ten dollar coins that are about five cents U.S. So while it has a large denomination it is equivalent to a cent in purchasing power. A rose by any other name...

One of the few copper coins I have seen with a reeded edge, not pictured.Again the reeded edge is placed on high denomination to avoid fraud and counterfeiting.

Guyanese coins are among my favorite because they are unexpected in design. The small size and neat patterns make them very unique.

The 20th dollar coin in the series and my latest find from a vending machine. There were two more but I had to pay for something so I used them. 

Poor President Garfield was only president for a few months in 1881. He was assassinated.

1968 Canada Cent

Just a few days into the crushing announcement that Canada will stop producing new cents I find one in my change. Now you will still be able to use Canadian cents in Canada but they will slowly start taking them back. Future value depends on how aggressive this penny recall is going to be. Granted about 35 billion were made so it may not raise the value by much but if a good accounting is done by the Royal Canadian Mint of coins returning and melted that may change.

This has to be the most telling part of the entire disappearing Canada penny stories. Via The Globe and Mail:

Ottawa is suggesting businesses round off cash transactions to the nearest five-cent increment but says it’s leaving this to businesses to work out for themselves.

This rounding off would occur after taxes had been applied to the purchase and would not be necessary for credit or debit transactions.

Seriously is there any faster way to get rid cash than cheating people out of 2-3 cents per transaction (they never round down for long). The poor, budgeters, and others who make many small transactions will feel this the most.
