Doubled Dime

Do you have an error coin and want to know its value? Leave a comment/question and I will do my best to find out the price and history for you.

Look on the the left hand side of this 1981-P dime and you will see that nearly all the letters have a doubling.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

This is an error coin but not a particularly ideal one, most like to say it is damaged. It is known as MDD (Machine Doubling Damage) or strike doubling. The classification, at least in the old error book, is V-B-1 meaning it is the first listed after mint damage on a coin.

Real doubling occurs on the die and is transfered to the coin. MDD occurs when the die bounces or slides on the coin.

The easiest way to identify a MDD is because of the flatness of the doubling and it is on the field of the coin. Usually in real doubling there is a roundness to the doubled part also it is often on the design not the field.

There are also some minor die cracks as this must of been a late stage die.

As for value...well it is not quite clear. According to most it adds no extra value because it is so common but I have seen them sell for a premium especially when the doubling is large. I'm sure I can put it on eBay and get $10.00.

Here are the stats...
Type/Country: 10 Cents/United States
Year: 1981P
Mintage: 676,650,000
Metal: 91.67% Copper, 8.33% Nickel
Value: $0.20 (I'm pretty sure it has more value but it need to properly attributed)

Do you have an error coin and want to know its value? Leave a comment/question and I will do my best to find out the price and history for you.

Your link did not work.

As far as I know no such D/S varieties exist.
There are 10 D/D varieties.

If you can share a proper link maybe it can be narrowed down.

That is not an S but a Die Break blob.

If this is real it would at least $20 possibly 10 times more.

My problem is that that blobs on the coin look fake, it looks like a fake error.

Looks like some one dipped it in acid taking off the nickel layer.

That said exactly what weight is it?

I am leaning towards a fake error but it should be weighed with a 0.01 gram scale.

Im still pretty new to the coin collecting hobby.I don't know the difference between real and fake just yet.But im very interested to learn. The coin came out of a quarter roll from the bank.
Guess I just keep it for a souvenier.
Ok..the coin weighs exactly 5.59 grams

Most true Missing Clad Layer error weigh 4.70 grams or less.

This does not mean it is fake but it could be an Improper Annealed error where the coin was heated to long before it was made. Except the scratches suggest it has no nickel.

Sorry but I would keep it, maybe in the future someone can see it in hand but I would say faked.

Could be I cannot be 100% but it looks to be machine doubling.

When you have it in hand if the doubling on a lower level and if it's flat and not curved then it is machine doubling.

But is it like steps? Is that flat doubling at a lower level.

Also on the leaves is the doubling flatter than the original?

Hi, I have a dime that has copper peeking through all over. It is probably less than half silver, the rest is copper. Is this worth anything?

dime that has copper peeking through all over. It is probably less than half silver, the rest is copper.

Partial Mising Clad error depends a lot on eye appeal, but they average about $15.00 if 50% in extra fine.

This is not the most desirable since collectors want full copper errors.

Good condtion is the lowest grade it's about $1.75.
In mint state with no scratches and like new, it would be about $80.00.

Yours is likely somewhere in between.

This appears to be damaged, someone one smoothed the back.

The big clue that this is not a Die Adjustment Strike or a Struck Through Grease error is that the front is not affected.

A coin has both sides struck at once so if one side is missing a huge portion of the design on the other side would be distorted or affected.
Since the front of your 1967 is perfect then this was not done during striking and therefore not an error.

It seems to be all the same error, Die Break error. Generally it does not add any value, but it has very nice eye appeal.

Possibly to the right buyer it may sell for a few bucks but it is not true doubling.

First never clean.
It is either Die Clash error or a Misaligned Strike, either way no extra value.

It is a common error that has no value.

Possible, although most turn out to not be true doubling.

About $5.00 in mint state.

I can't really tell it looks a bit flat but it also looks like a 1972P-1DO-003
.

So if I were pressured I would say yes, true doubling about $2.00 in fine.

Congrats, I also found one like this years ago.

Man said...

What would cause those distortions? And are they werth holding on to?

The majority of this is a common partial missing clad error due to faulty alignment. There is no extra value to this and if I can recall the actual cause I will post it.

Penny3 has a Misaligned Die error but it is very minor and has no extra value.

Scratch test is not a good way to determine plated or not plated.

That said a cent should weigh 2.50 grams. Being 2.48 is within normal range, so I will assume it was acid dipped.

True errors tend to be 2.46 grams. Plus they should have great luster.

It is hard to tell with the picture but this may have to be verified in hand.

Sounds like a Die Clash error where the reverse die gets stamped with the front design then transfers it to the coin.

No extra value.

Just use a free photo site and copy & paste the link here if you think it is something else.

2 lincoln pennies. The surface is completly distorded.Does not look like corrosion.Any idea what caused it?

Damaged, I have some like those.

It is harshly cleaned coins, they had an acid bath, sand blasted, and then rock tumbled.
Banks especially back in the days use to clean coins by tumbling them.

Granted coins left in dryers or stuck in vending machines also gets this way, the heat and wear is very bad on coins.

No extra value.

I have a dime that appears to be a 1968.I know that most likely it's just a form of a philadelphia striking error. But there are a few odd things about it.which makes me wonder if it is a SF proof that made it into circulation, because the double stamped them,or used higher pressure.I may have to post a couple of times to get it all on here.1st the face.there is a wrinkled-raised line inside the rim, running from the I,at IGWT all the way to the back top corner of his head. The I&W in IGWT is distorted and touching/pushed into the rim as is the 8 in the date.I very much looks like an 8.2nd the back. The same funny raised/wrinkled line runs almost completely around, between the rim and lettering. There is also this odd indentation/circle/impression between the image and lettering when viewed at the right angle or lighting.3rd it is clearly copper sandwiched, but there are no ridges.I also weighed it,if that helps,2.2 grams. It does look worn/used but in good condition.my phone won't take good pics of it.Is this worth finding an expert to look at,or a waste of my time. And how could I trust him to be accurate or honest.I called a coin shop to ask some of the same ques. but after just mentioning that it looked double struck or might be a rare SF,he said I don't buy coins like that.I told him I don't want to sell it,I'm just trying to identify it,if it's rare and he said I wouldn't know.I asked him what kind of coin dealer are you then and he hung up.So what do I do?Again,is this worth putting more time into? Thanks.

Man said...

dime that appears to be a 1968.I know that most likely it's just a form of a philadelphia striking error.But...

Sounds like a Misaligned Die error which is common on dimes.

The giveaway was the lack of reeded edge and the odd edge. A slight misalignment of the die causes the coin to be struck out of collar but nearly in the center.

No extra value.
It needs to be extremely off-center to have value.

If you feel it is another type of error just post a picture online somewhere and copy & paste the link here.

Anonymous said...

ok,my cam on my phone just won't take good enough pics. But after looking up types of errors,I have a better description.I would have to find some way to view it highly magnified,to tell if it had slight double lettering.I might have a reason looks double tapped or off centered.it all has to do with the main oddity on the back when you look at it the right way.As I said I looked up types of error strikes. And it appears to be a light or late stage form of bottle capping.now does this make a difference?if it has the LSBC on reverse and off centering or double tap on front, does that make a difference. Also how could you tell if it is a circulated 68SF or just a philly.Sorry for the trouble but this seemed like a good challenge for you considering the high level of mundane questions asked of you.thanks again, you seem to really know your stuff.

Man said...

-I am not familiar with this term.

Also how could you tell if it is a circulated 68SF or just a philly.
--Proof coins have the letter S.
A rare no S proof would be $25,000 but it would have cameo qualities like a mirrored background and frosted design.

You also maybe talking about a Die Cap error but again without pictures I cannot say with any exactness. Any other online resource will ask you to do the same.

Anonymous said...

oh man I hate to post again, but this is too odd.The wrinkled lines definately looks like die cracks.I don't know what to think.I feel kind of stupid. But this coin has 2-4 possible mild errors on it.The back still looks odd if you hold it the right way.The closest thing I could find to it was bottle capping, but this is so mild it looks like an opticle illusion.like one of those 3D pics tou have to look at it the right way.OMG,my phone actually caught the odd pressed ring around the torch and branches. If your interested,I can try to find a digital camera tomorrow for the other things.LOL.either way this is exciting.

Man said...

The wrinkled lines definately looks like die cracks

Then you probably have a Late Stage Die Strike, it often has doubling, die cracks, polish marks, and misalignment.

Unless the die was completely shattered then it adds no extra value.

How do you view or open these links that people leave of pics?I select/highlight them and search with bing. But they give me a bunch of random results for photobucket or imageshack.and not the images specified. Also I am thinking of getting heavily into coin collecting as a hobby and for value. So I have a couple more questions. Is it worth my time to buy rolls of quarters, nickels, dimes, and pennies every week to search for rare and error coins?what the heck is the difference between machine doubling aand real doubling?Lastly,I just got a new 2012 nickel. They appear to have a highly polished look, almost like a proof, very beautiful.now the reason I mention this is that I have a 1982 D nickel from the year I was born,I have had it for many years,It looks in mint condition or near mint. But it looks almost exactly like the highly polished finish of the 2012.But the stamping or lettering and pic of Montecello is bolder or stands out more than the 2012.Could it have been a proof that made it into circulation? thanks.

--Not for rare or error coins, for other things like old and silver roll hunting does work well.

what the heck is the difference between machine doubling aand real doubling?
--Machine Double is when the coin is struck once but the Die hits it slightly again. Common and worthless.

Doubled Die is real, it's when the Die gets made wrong with a doubled image then it gets struck to each coin, which then should be destroyed but some get out.

Could it have been a proof that made it into circulation?
--Proof coins have the letter S for 1980 or later.
That said sometimes yes S proof coins do make it out.

You are incorrect.
All U.S. Roosevelt dimes have JS under the neck.
Often in non-silver coins it is weak but it is always there, I just checked all my 1965-2011 dimes and they are there.

To know if your 1965 dime is silver just look at the edge for the copper or lack of.

Not knowing what is on the coin try soaking it in olive oil for a few days.

This is a very slow and gentle way to remove stuff.

You can also try weighing the coin.

The 1994 165 degrees is well known and possibly the last rotated reverse generally they are 105-175 degrees rotated.

That said in high grade MS-60 about $30.
MS-63 about $60.

Your seems average circulated to low grade, so about $2.00 possibly a bit more. Auction prices seem to go much higher for some strange reason.

1988 p dime with the (T) missing in trust
--Struck Through Grease error, no extra value.

1989 p dime that is doubled extremely bad all over both dime are at least ef-40 an penny is in extremely great shape
--Sounds like a Late Stage Die it has no extra value as it is not true doubling.

Without clear pictures this is the best guess.

I also have a 2008 Alaska quarter. Its not the regular color as quarters are.
--Looks just damaged as it been in a fire. That said it could be Improperly Annealed those have value up to $200.00 in high grades.
But they can only be authenticated in hand by an expert and low grade examples do not have value.

I would say yours is not but I cannot be 100%.

Possible Die Break error, if less than 15% of the surface no extra value.

I have a 1975 DIME with NO mint mark(w,p,o,c,s)
It doesint seem to have any damage. But from a grading site i found it seems to be a "extremly fine grade". Iv found out its from philidelphia and very few were found till 1978 with no mint mark at ALL just like mine. Do you think its work my time?

No mint mark 1975 dime is normal and has no extra value.

I am not sure what you mean but the P mint mark was not added on dimes until 1980.

P=phildelfia mint company or what ever lol
But iv read that in 1975 only one mint made them that year and it was philadefia but there was i die that had the mint mark comletly missing. But they cought the die but didint find the dimes till later. So apparintly not meny were pronted with out the mint in 1975. Once again iv read all this on multipull sights.

@OrganicGaming101

1975 No-S proof dimes are different from the regular circulating dimes.

All Philadelphia circulating dimes have a normal surface and no mint mark.

No-S proof dimes have a mirrored background and frosted details. They do not look like a normal dime. Yes they are rare and world be worth $60,000 or more.

Oh okay. Thank you for clarefing that for me.

I have no idea what you are describing.

Use your Google+ page or another photo site to upload clear images of both sides.

I was going through some old coins and found a 1981 dime. I cant tell if it's just damaged or and error. most of the edges are not raised like a normal dime and the mint mark looks like a blob of metal. Any clue?

Sounds like a Late Stage Die with cracks and breaks.

No extra value.

I have a 2006 D dime, it seems to be slightly smaller then normal dimes and it is 2x as thick any ideas?

Damaged, possibly spooned. If the edge is smooth than definitely damaged.

It is easy to smash a coin and change its shape.

1986 D dime with a doubled reverse

As far as I know all are machine doubling with no extra value.

If real doubling it could be worth hundreds.

1988 D dime that looks like the front and back are 2 pieces.

Lamination or Missing Clad error, about $5.00 to start more depending on condition and degree of error.

It has to be verified in hand but the start at about $50.00
