Odd Nickels

Do you have a nickel and want to know its value? Leave a comment/question and I will do my best to find out the price and history for you

nickels2
nickels1

These are the front and backs of some special nickels, two 1943P and 1 1950D. The 1943 nickels were found in my change they contain silver from the war years of 1942-1945 they contain the mintmark on the back on top of the building.

The other coin is a 1950D nickel which is semi-key because of the low mintage. I had to buy this one and it was blast white but soon sitting in the crappy holder it started to brown, I've had to break out the coin and may one day get some pure acetone to clean it up.

nickels3
nickels4

Here's the stats for these nickels...
Year: 1943-P
Mintage: 271,165,000
Metal: 56% copper 35% silver 9% manganese
Value: P-01 $2.08(badly scratched)(2012 values)

Year: 1943-P
Mintage: 271,165,000
Metal: 56% copper 35% silver 9% manganese
Value: G-4 $1.20 or $2.08(for silver content)(2012 values)

Year: 1950-D

How can you tell the difference between a 1967 SMS jefferson nickel from a regular strick 1967 jefferson?

SMS nickel are sharper and generally shiner. Aside from that there is no clear distinction.

After having a verified SMS and a regular both in hand side by side you can notice the different. Online pictures are not a good reference.

Man said...

PCGS graded 1967 SMS MS66 and I have a loose 1967 jefferson which is better quality then the SMS, but has more of a frosty appearence than mirror like. Could this ungraded 1967 jefferson be the more rare regular strick.

High quality regular strikes are common. That said it could an SMS that was placed in circulation.

Both possibilities are common and normal.

I have a nickel with monticello pictured on the back, the back looks perfectly legitimate, and i got it in a roll of nickels from the bank, but where the front face should be is just a copper colored blank slate. I am wondering what a nickel looks like prior to being pressed with the picture, i am hoping it is a misprint of some sort but as it has no face side so i cannot see where it was printed or the date it was printed there.

A nickel is solid throughout so this is some type of fake. Probably made for jewelry by cutting a nickel and plating one side.

It is not possible for this to be a true error.

Hey, I just found a 1999 P Jefferson Nickel while searching circulated bank rolls that strikes me as odd. It has a rounded rim and weighs 4.76 grams. I don't believe it was post-strike damage as it appears to be a foreign planchet. Do you know of any foreign coins being produced in 1999 at Philly that would resemble a nickel? Everything on the strike seems a little light and the rim is rounded perfectly. Any ideas? Should I send it to be inspected/graded?

Generally after 1984 the U.S. mint has not made any other type of world money.

The rounded edge makes me think it is damaged as I have seen this type of damage before. Even wrong metal coins have rims.

It could be an error of a thin planchet bu they are rare and the cost to grade is not worth it.

The best I can say is have several dealers see it in hand but it is likely just damaged.

2005 (ocean in view) nickel with a third zero in the date and some letters very faded.

Dropped Letter error, it happens when Grease/dirt fills the die making the coin leaving faded spots on the coin. Sometimes the grease/dirt drops back on the coin in the shape of the letter or number it filled.

On average it's about $20.00 but more are found and graded high everyday so it may be lower.

What's the value of a 1966 FS Nickle with lots of wear?

1966 FS Nickle with lots of wear

A nickel usually cannot be Full Step(FS) and worn.

So maybe $0.10 or $1.00 depending on wear pattern.

Man said...

2004 copper nickel with the louisiana purchase on the back with p under jeffersons shoulder

Do you mean it is copper color?

Or is it the normal color?

Because a nickel is made of mixture copper-nickel but should be silver in color.

Anonymous said...

it has a copper look fully from what i can tell but no silver i can see.is it a miss print that didnt get a silver coating?

Man said...

Not exactly.
The are a solid metal with no coating.
It should be silver color even in the middle.

Next you need to weigh it with a 0.01 gram scale.

If it is an Off-Metal error about $250.00.
Like this one...
http://www.fredweinberg.com/inventory/item.php?ID=6683

Or an Improperly Annealed error that starts as $50 but has to be verified.

If just toning then no extra value.

That said it should be weighed with a 0.01 gram scale.

Anonymous said...

My 1973 nickel looks just like the one you posted here

http://www.fredweinberg.com/inventory/item.php?ID=6683

It has no silver showing anywhere. So what should the weight be and where can I get it weighed?

Man said...

So what should the weight be and where can I get it weighed?

If an error struck on a cent 3.11 grams but anything other than 5.00 grams is an error.

Find a scale anywhere try a jewelry shop or pawn or coin shop. Maybe you have friends with scales.

Man said...

That is toning, it happens because even the safest paper will bleed chemicals.

A layer of bleach and dyes are bleeding into the coins, this is considered common and does not affect value.

Man said...

a nickel from 2000 but where the ridge of the coin is rounded.

Damage of some sort, no extra value.

Often bank tumblers, cleaners, and dryers can cause this since it is the only way to clean dirty coins for circulation.

Also spooning, when someone tries to make a coin ring by smashing the edge into a round shape.

Sounds like a Struck Through Grease error, no extra value.

Possibly a Die Adjustment Strike but these would have both sides affected.

It is not possible for a U.S. coin to be stuck with a blank side. This is most likely a coin that was smooth/shaved for jewelery or a love token.

Weigh to see if it is a Off-Metal error, which would be about $500.00 to start.

That said these coins easily tarnish or when heated can "bleed" copper.

hello,

I have a bit of a mystery. I have a 1945 Nickel (Big D above the Capital). It seems uncirculated and shiny - almost a bit too shiny like it has been plated and has some remnants of tape or glue residue on the back but the mystery is that it is magnetic. My rare earth magnet attracts to it as if it is a steel penny. Any thoughts?

These have a silver and manganese but neither is magnetic.

I suspect that someone coated the coin in steel to make it shiny.

So all the collectors value is gone but it should have a value of 1.30.

1967 nickel with a round indention in the head.

Possibly I would need to see it to make sure but likely it is damage with no extra value.

That said Lamination is an error that may cause this and that adds $5.00 or more depending on eye appeal and condition.

Yes sounds like a badly made magic coin.

It is not possible for a U.S. coin to have two heads from different years as the dies that make coin are destroyed after the year is over.

No extra value above metal value.

You guys probably will not believe this but since you all seem like pretty serious coin enthusiasts I am going to share this with you. Having purchased an uncirculated 1943 Big P Jefferson Nickel I accidentally dropped it on the desk and it sounded like a post war non silver nickel. I was at this point shocked and confused as every single war nickel sounds the same. 35% silver has a distinct tonality to it. At this point I took it to the scales and it weighed the modern standard post 1946 weight of 4.8grams. I know for a fact this coin has absolutely no silver in it. This coin is not supposed to exist based on my research. An off metal composition or nickel planchett error is a strange thing indeed. I am looking forward to hearing any ideas anyone might have as to the origin of this kind of error or if there are any others in existence. to the best of my knowledge this is the only one that has been found that I can find on the net or in several error books at my disposal 11/3/13. Also curious about possible value. I make my living with coins. Charlesroyka@yahoo.com Please let me know if you have any thoughts on this coin. It is uncirculated and is not a counterfeit.

Nickels of all types weigh 5.00 grams. This is still in the range of normal tolerance.

It is possible you have an off-metal error but it is more likely a light planchet. At this point only having it graded will tell but all off-metal 1943 nickels have been steel.

I have found a Brilliant Uncirculated off metal copper nickel
1943 P Jefferson nickel with full steps and near flawless detail. I am pretty sure it is one of a kind especially when considering the quality. I have heard from Mike Byers that this coin is much rarer than a copper 1943 Penny. I am 100% certain the coin is Cu-Ni but am afraid to send it to anyone to grade because of the possibility of it's actual auction value. Really not sure which way to go from here. 4.8grams normal weight and definitely a copper nickel planchett. Has anyone else ever heard of any of these kinds of errors. This particular coin was from an original 1945 sealed war nickel BU set from Maine. Can anyone tell me what the best course of action might be for securing a value and an ideal place to get it graded. Obviously PCGS is a good one but I am nervous about putting this coin in an envelope since it is probably worth more than everything I own several times over. From Oklahoma. Mike Byers has a VF25 transitional war nickel copper nickel planchett error on his website and he talks of one or two other off metal errors like it. Please let me know if anyone has any information to share. Thanks Charlesroyka@yahoo.com

Concerning things like the 4.8 gram weight which is 0.2 grams lighter than normal. Also found in a 1945 set is also concerning.

That said it may be a possible error valued over $50,000 up to $500,000.

You may want to do On-site grading at a local coin show.

I have a 1965 quarter with odd reeded edges. Where the edges would usually be the same height or depth the copper is slightly lower than the "silver" edges. The edge from the front side of the coin is flat with no ridges and very thin. The "silver" edge from the back of the coin is higher and ridged. The copper in between which is almost even with the "silver" edge from the front is also ridged. Do you think this was caused by an error during production and if it may be worth anything? That is likely a Sintered Planchet or Improperly Aneealed error it has to be black and shiny for a real error. Value is based on grade but average is $50.00

Black and dull is likely environmental damage.

That said heating a nickel sometimes causes the copper to surface so it may be a lesser error.

1945 Monticello P nickel, idk too much about value I've been collecting the type of coins from my loose change for years love them and imagining the history. Anyway my question about the nickel is why does this I found have a huge NA stamped across jeffersons's face? It's in the middle of the coin so everything else is visible and decent condition but the letter A impressed through the other side and made a bulge in the building on back so some of the building has the off. Any Idea what this means?

Unknown counterstamp, made at someone's home or part of a business. Either way damage no extra value above metal value.

I have a 1963 Nickel and the Thomas Jefferson image has a strange shaved look that is unlike my other nickels..it seems to be authentic but I have never seen one like it other than the on in the blog pic that seems to be from the 1940's. I know this must be a rare find. However, is it worth big money or should I just keep it for my collection.

Damage, happens a lot but when it gets to banks they usually pull it out to be recycled.

No extra value.

Hi, I have a 1970 D nickel that on the reverse where it has "five cents" it reads "five ts". I searched if there were any other such errors and was unable to find anything. What is your opinion about this? Is it an error or damage? Thank you!

I had 2 question to ask u and I could probably answer one if my 6 yr old daughter had not destroyed my scales here other day but the question I was going to ask u about that is any of the 1963 nickels did any of them ever accidentally get any silver or struck on the wrong stock metal cause my 1963 nickel looks in away to have silver in it but I know the only ones that had silver in them was the war nickels 1942-1945 and I know errors happen and stuff here and there and my other question is I thought when I got this nickel it was a 1985 p nickel yesterday but I got a better light and examined it for a pretty good while and after doing so it turns out from what I can tell after examining it for a while it is a 1963 p nickel the top of the 3 is smeered on the top of the 6 I thought at first the 6 was an 8 but after examining it all I see where the 6 is struck on the coin and the top part of the 3 is like not all smeered but struck on the top part of the 6 and it has a p struck about right where the mint marks would normally be on the nickels and I know the Philly mint up until 1980 did not put their p mint mark on the coins their coins was normally when people seen a coin with no mint mark they asked about it but that normally meant that coin was struck by the Philly mint but I was just seeing if u can answer both of those questions or give any advice that might help or anything thank u for ur time

I have a no year Jefferson nickel that is thin center struck planchet, the copper is streaked through the nickel and the whole thing is shiny and smooth like silk, but dead center strike is almost a ghostly image of Jefferson and on the other side isanother ghostly image of Monticello and you can just make out the word Monticello under it. It is a beautiful coin but without it having a date that makes it worth less doesn't it? I would send a picture but I don't see a JPG upload link. I really would like somebody to look at this and tell me what they think. If anybody has any ideas let me know.
