1959-D U.S. Nickel

Do you have a nickel and want to know its value? Leave a comment

Just had a nice comment-conversation with Dr. Math from My Coin Box the other day on how Dr. Math considers anything pre-1965 old while I consider anything pre-1959 old. Math said he had a bunch of 1964 nickels and I thought except for the slight metal value there is little reason to collect them.

Then again the 50 year rule of collecting unofficially states by 2014 these will be hot items. Well this one I just found falls into the rule but back in 2008 I might have tossed it back into circulation.

Here's the stats...
Type/Country: 5 Cents / United States of America
Year: 1959 D
Mintage: 160,738,240
Metal: 75% copper 25% nickel
Value: $0.05

Also found a 1956 wheat cent but since I talked about it before there was no need to repeat.

Do you have a five-cent coin and want to find out its value? Leave a comment and I will do my best to find out the price and history for you.

21 dollars worth, for Comments/Questions click here.:

Nice Post.

Thanks Dr. Math but even I have to admit that is one beat up nickel.

I have worse. I got a 1958 nickel a few weeks ago that looks like it was run over quite a few times. I plan on keeping it until I get another but it is more of an eye-sore than a collector's item.

Also check out my blog to see another coin that is worn beyond anything I have seen from circulation.

Thanks for the comments!

I have a nice stash of wartime nickels, my favorite to collect, but I always keep an eye open for anything pre-1965, but I don't neglect anything after that date. Two days ago I found a pretty nice 1948-S nickel in a roll, I looked up and saw the mintage at 11,300,00, that's the oldest I've found so far roll searching, but it's something I've only gotten into recently. Cool blog by the way!

Almost forgot, the girlfriend went to Taco Bell the other day and brought me back a 39 wheat penny and 46 nickel, so close to adding one to my wartime collection!

Nice I understand, if I see a post 1959 nickel that is in great shape I will keep it.

I have found Buffalo nickels in my change and since you as a roll hunter should be finding my older soon.

Also nice to see you have others in your life collecting too.
Good luck.

The oldest Jefferson Nickel I have from circulation is 1940.

I also found a 1944 P and 1944 S Wartime Nickel.

I have about 50 1964 nickels.

I got a Buffalo nickel today that must be really worn out, as there is no date or no "Five Cent" writing on the bottom of the back, below the buffalo.

You found some good nickels but why so many 1964 nickels, they aren't special.

Just wondering not complaining.

I know they aren't special, but I like collecting old nickels. Nickels made before 1970, I tend to have a lot of doubles.

I am missing a 1962 Nickel and a 1969 S Nickel, when I get those, I will complete my Nickel 1962-1995 Book.

On a side note, I work at a grocery store, so I encounter a lot of old coins.

--Oh a 1970 rule of collecting, very interesting probably means your a young guy. Not old like me.

--That's great so close, I just finished that book from my change. It's the 2009 nickels that I'm having difficulty finding.

I'm 18, and I started collecting a few months ago. I have interest in a lot of different coins. Basically, the only type of coin I don't collect are the 50 State Quarters. The oldest quarter I have is a 1964, which is 90% silver. For pennies, the oldest coin I have is a 1904 Indian Cent. I have a bunch of foreign coins, as well.

My 1941-1975 penny book is far from complete because I am having a hard time finding certain wheat pennies. I keep getting a whole bunch of 50's doubles. The oldest wheat penny I have is 1911.

I know I have a 2011 D and P Nickel, but I do not have any from 2009. 2007 Nickels are extremely common for me, I found a bunch of them.

Well welcome to the world of numismatics, it's good you know what you like to collect. I tend to keep one of everything, very unfocused although I do like silver coins.

Good luck.

Thanks. The only silver coins I have are the War Time Nickels, the 1964 Quarter, and the 1966 Kennedy Half Dollar.

I made a post on my blog to clarify why I have so many 1964 nickels and why I consider anything pre-1965 old. Hope it helps!

My 1962-1995 Nickel Book is complete! I am having a hard time completing the 1975- penny book because I can't find a 1991-D penny, 2006-D penny, 2008-D penny and two 2009-D pennies.

Congrats, I think those later pennies will be a bit difficult.

Those Denver coins are always so slow here in the East Coast, I would have a complete 1957-2008 nickel set complete except I missing a 1997-D. It's ridiculous because it's such a common nickel and I refuse to buy one.

I live in Vermont and I agree with you in that the D coins are harder to find. When I get older, I'd love to travel to the West Coast and see what coins I could get in everyday change.

I have no intent in selling my collection as I think coin collecting is a fun hobby. I do also collect old bills, and my oldest is a 1934 D 10 Ten Dollar Bill.
