It's Something

Do you have any coin and want to know its value? Leave a comment

Yes I've been busy and have not been able to post regularly on my new finds. I will say it's not much of an issue since most of my finds are common despite the fact I tried to make change as much as possible.

The U.S. nickel and dollar were from a MetroCard vending machine while the Canadian nickel is from change at a store. Just to get dollar coins I use the MetroCard machines and while most of dollars are from 2000 and crusty brown they do have a quick turnaround. A recent subway trip got me a 2009-P 11th President dollar coin which is good since it came out on August 20, 2009 and it was in my hand by October 18, 2009.

Again nothing too special about each coin:
  • The 2006 Canada 5 cents is the first one for me.
  • The 1957-D U.S. nickel is the 4th for me but it is half a century old so why not.
  • The U.S. dollar is just 1 month old and that is early for a change find.
Here's the stats...
Type/Country: 5 Cents / Canada
Year: 2006 RCM Logo
Mintage: 43,008,000 (Estimated)
Metal: 94.5% Steel, 3.5% Copper, 2% Nickel
Value: $0.05

Type/Country: 5 Cents / United States of America
Year: 1957 D
Mintage: 136,828,900
Metal: 75% copper 25% nickel
Value: $0.05

Type/Country: 1 Dollar-James K. Polk / United States
Year: 2009 P (Edge normal or ^^)
Mintage: 46,620,000 (Estimated)
Metal: 88.5% Copper, 6% Zinc, 3.5% Manganese, and 2% Nickel
Value: $1.00 in AU-50

Still not one 2009 dime or nickel.

Do you have any coin and want to know its value? Leave a comment/question and I will do my best to find out the price and history for you.

41 dollars worth, for Comments/Questions click here.:

i just found a Canadian coin from my grandmother. It is the color of a penny, bigger around and heavier. One side has a picture of the king and queen(i'm assuming). The other side has some latin words(i'm assuming) with an engraved picture of Canada and the year 1930. Any ideas?

Anonymous said...

Upon closer investigation the coin has 1939 on it. This is a correction to the previous post. Thanks

This is a 1939 Royal Visit Medallion the bronze version is the most common at about $5.00 in fine.

Here is a good LINK with history.

I picked up about 10 nice 2009 pennies whilst in Chigaco, just to hang on to, but didn't get any dimes or nickels myself either.

The pennies seem to be circulating well.

Same issue here, my girlfriend has gotten 4 of the log cabin pennies but I haven't gotten any 2009 cents myself... this is getting frustrating! Anyone know if you can go to a bank that you're not a member of and get bills changed into coins?

Man said...

iceclimbers1 - A good bank should change your bills just to try to get you to be a customer, but most won't.

Personally I ask cashiers at stores I know in my area if they have any new coins or "funny money".

Hi,
I was wondering if you could take a look at these old coins we found in my Grandmothers house. We have found many different ones, from Morgan Dollars, Peace Dollars, Silver Certs, 2 dollar bills that are in sequence. Here is a link to some of them, would you know the value of any of them?
Thanks for your help :)

1897-S about $22.00 in very-fine
1923 about $17.00 looks cleaned which may lower the value
1903-S about $80.00 in fine
1884-S about $17.00 looks cleaned which may lower the value
1889-O about $12.60

when you said you ask your cashiers, do you just ask any in your area? And do you pay them penny for penny? What about foreign currency?

Yes I know them from my area.
I've lived in the same place for 20+ years so most of them know I collect.

I get them at face value because I usually buy something and when they give me change I ask if they found anything interesting.

The reason I have so many Canadian cents is that is what they give me the most.

Occasionally if I spot something given to a cashier that I don't know I will ask. It's 50/50 if they give it.

I get many foreign coins but never any foreign currency/notes because cashiers never will accept those bills.

I really want to buy some other coins, but I was wondering if this was a good trade.

80$ consisting of E95131820B 20$ from 1993 (fine), G39624586D 10$ from 1995 (fine), C93967937A 10$ from 1985 (good), and 10 crisp 2$ bills from 2003, sequential, and some other generic 20$ bill
for
1350 Wheat pennies, 1910-1958, G-AU

some other generic 20$ bill about $20.00

for 1350 Wheat pennies, 1910-1958, G-AU about $81.00 at $0.06 times 1350.

It would be an even trade.

It's possible to get more wheaties for less but it seems fair if some if the wheaties can grade EF or higher.

I would like know the value of a 1944 D/D wheat penny. It is bright with lots of detail.

Most of the varieties average about $3.00 in extra-fine. There are 18 varieties none are worth as much as an D/S.

It is really common for coin collectors to check their change for rare coins. For those who are interested in coin collecting, I would recommend checking all of your change in a day before putting it in the jar. So that you can cash out all the coins without worrying about rare ones being mixed up in the group.

I have a very nice 1921 P Morgan with multiply die cracks front and back. I count at least 9. I could not find a VAM that matched it. Any idea what it might be worth. I would probably grade an MS 64 or 65.

Die cracks on Morgans are common and usually this many would add $50 - $100 above the $350.00 book value.

If you find an error collector they may pay more.

I got a Trade Dollar with what looks like Chinese, maybe Japanese symbols preesed into it. Any idea what this is about?

Common on trade dollars these are called chop marks they don't change the value much and there is a market for certain Chinese marks but I'm no expert.
You would have to find them at a forum or coin club.
