Welcome to the Bahamas

Do you have a coin form the Bahamas Island and want to know its value? Leave a comment/question and I will do my best to find out the price and history for you.

Continuing with some decent looking coins from the bag I bought is some from the Bahamas.

While half of the coins were normal circulated types they did include some proofs. Which is not all that great because the circulating issues were actual rarer then the proof. For example the 1972 10 Cents had 11,000 coins minted while the proofs numbered 35,000. It's harder to find a brilliant uncirculated than an untouched proof.

Obverse above.

Reverse below.
These coins were made by the Franklin Mint in the U.S.A. in matte, special uncirculated, and proof. The little stylized F on the reverse is the mark of the Franklin Mint. Matte is basically the circulated coins, special uncirculated is like proof but all completely mirrored. Proof has the background mirrored and frosted designs.

Starting from right to left.
Here are the stats for these Bahamas coins...
Type/Country: 10 Cents Proof/Bahamas
Year: 1972
Mint: Franklin Mint
Mintage: 35,000
Metal: Copper-Nickel
Value: $1.00 if untouched

Type/Country: 25 Cents Proof/Bahamas
Year: 1971
Mint: Franklin Mint
Mintage: 31,000
Metal: Nickel
Value: $1.50 if untouched

Type/Country: 50 Cents Proof/Bahamas
Year: 1973
Mint: Franklin Mint
Mintage: 35,000
Metal: 80% Silver
Value: $7.00 if untouched($1.00 in crease since 2008)

These were sold in sets but if they were less then perfect they were cut out and put into circulation by collectors.

I just came across a 1973 $150 Bahamian lobster gold coin in uncirculated condition. My guide book doesn't list it until 1974. Problem? What is its value?
It's not from the Bahamas, but I'm also looking at a 1975, 500 cordobas gold coin from Nicaragua and my guide book doesn't mention this coin that has the typical reverse, but the obverse is a frosted nude with the words, "el capullo". Any idea of its worth?
Thanks again,
Dennis

About $240.00 it should be listed in Krause as KM#51.

In the late '70s I was in the Bahamas and bought a 1966 five-coin Bahama Islands BU set from a coin dealer. The coins are sealed in a five-coin heavy plastic (vinyl?) strip and are in excellent shape with no tarnish. Coins are 1¢, 5¢, 10¢, 15¢, and 25¢. Obverse is QEII, Reverse begins with a starfish (1¢) and ends with a sailboat (25¢). What might the current value of the set be? (I have no intention of selling them, just curious.) Thanks.

From 1974 to 1985 they were officially 3.16 grams of Brass.
In 1985 they changed to Copper-Plated Zinc and 2.58 grams.

So your coin is normal, no extra value.

I would like to bid on either of the following

Barbados 10 dollar Neptune 1973 PROOF SILVER 1.1271 OZ - Uncirculated condition

1978 BARBADOS SILVER $10 DOLLARS PROOF Silver

Barbados 10 Dollar Silver Proof Uncirculated 1976 #17-A

Which would you recommend among the above 3? What is the maximum amount I can pay for each of them.

These go for about $14.00 maybe a little ore since the silver prices are still rising. It was a fair price.

Barbados 10 dollar Neptune 1973 PROOF SILVER 1.1271 OZ - Uncirculated condition
About $30.00 max.

1978 BARBADOS SILVER $10 DOLLARS PROOF Silver
About $30.00 max.

Barbados 10 Dollar Silver Proof Uncirculated 1976 #17-A
About $30.00 max.

Granted this my max value which is just $5.00 above there book value. If you really want a coin you may want pay more.

Mintage: 2,750

1978 BARBADOS SILVER $10 DOLLARS PROOF Silver
Mintage: 7,079

Barbados 10 Dollar Silver Proof Uncirculated 1976 #17-A
Mintage: 16,000

Because of the low mintage and silver content they are a fine investment.

I'm a big fan of foreign silver since you can melt them if necessary but American bullion is very stable and can be bought in bulk for very little extra, same with Canadian bullion.

All the sets are in uncirculated condition. I would be purchasing any 2 sets among the five listed. REBUBLIC OF PANAMA PROOF SET

1975 8 PIECE KM# PS14

SET MINTAGE ONLY 4,057

INCLUDES KM#31, 33.1-38.1, 39.1a - 40.1a (39.1a - 401a are .9250 SILVER)

Again I'm sort of cheap so my max bid would be $30. Use your own judegment.

MARKET VALUE PER 2005 STANDARD CATALOG OF WORLD COINS = $40.00
For 2010 the listed value is about $70.00

The tarnish may lower the value a little but not much.

Auctions are a tricky thing especially with foreign coins. Go by the images and your gut.

I am really interested in bidding on the Belize silver proof set of 1974, 1976. The silver value alone is $40 as mentioned by you. What are the mintages of 1974 and 1976. Any other year where 8 silver proof coins were minted? What are the chances of these appreciating in future.

I am getting Coinage of Guyana 1976 8 coin set for $44 . Is it a good investment ? What is its mintage?

What is the maximum value which you would bid taking into account the silver content and appreciation for the following sets

1973 - 1975 Barbados silver proof set with Neptune

Jamaica set with either 8 or 9 coins 1975 or 1979

Thanks. I would be making purchase of a couple of sets around $30 to $50 range in a couple of days time. Thanks a ton for all the help from your side. You are a life saver.

1974 mintage 31,368
1976 mintage 5,897
From 1974 to 1985 they made the silver sets.
All the sets from 1974 to 1980 have lost value.
All the sets from 1981 to 1985 have gianed value.

Coinage of Guyana 1976 8 coin set for $44. Is it a good investment? What is its mintage?
Not bad, the original listed value was $45 but it has gone down, I see this one going up because of the silver.

I won't guess the maximum...what I do is go ten percent above the listed value.
BUT I collect for fun, I do not invest in coins since I never plan to sell.

What is the catalogue listed and the present value of 1974 BELIZE EIGHT COIN .925 STERLING SILVER PROOF SET. The set contains almost 3.05 ounces of silver which comes to approx 45$ worth of silver as of today Where silver rate per ounce is $15.51 per ounce. If I bid upto 55$ and win it Is it worth it?

1975 Trinidad & Tobago 8 Coin Silver Proof Set Box COA What is its mintage and catalogue value? It contains approx 1.9 ounces of asw correct me if I am wrong. So silver value alone is about 29 dollars. 35$ for the set a fair price?

1973 barbados silver proof set with COA Max bid of 34$ as silver value alone is close to 29$?

What is the catalogue value of 1976 Decimal Silver Proof Set From Republic Of Malta?
Seller is asking for $42 What is its mintage and the silver content in coins with their asw?

I will be bidding and making a purchase in the next couple of days Will keep you informed about the same. Truly appreciate your help.

It is listed at $40.00 but this was when silver was less then $12.00 so whatever your willng to pay is fine.

Again I can not advise on your purchases whatever you can afford is fine.

What is the catalogue value of 1976 Decimal Silver Proof Set From Republic Of Malta?
Seller is asking for $42 What is its mintage and the silver content in coins with their asw?

This one is not listed but the 1976 proof set is about $90.00, 26,248 were minted and none are silver.

I won the 1974 BELIZE EIGHT COIN .925 STERLING SILVER PROOF SET for US $53 which seems fair as I believe I have paid a premium of less than 10 dollars on the set. The point of Affordability is not an issue. The reason for asking the catalogue value and the present value and the silver content is I don't want to be ripped off on ebay.Caveat Emptor. I also do not intend to sell the proof sets but it is good to know if and when required if I need to dispose it I am in a position to at least get the price I paid for the item.

By the way Does this set really contain approx 3.05 ounces of silver and taking into account the present rate of ounce of silver ($15.51). The value of silver alone is $47. Correct me if I am wrong. Thanks

I will keep you updated with my purchase. Thanks for all your help. Sorry for pestering you with my queries for the last few days.

What is the value of 1975 Jamaica 8 coin Proof Set ? Seller is claiming 1.8772 ounce ASW ? It is without box and COA. Seller is asking for $40 or best offer. What is a fair price for this set without box and COA? Is it correct and did Jamaica in 1975 issue proof sets without any silver coins? Which are the silver coins and their denomination?

Is it safe to buy silver proof sets from ebay without box or any COA if seller assures of the authenticity? Is there a way to identify an authentic silver coin from a copy or replica (silver plated)

Thanks

Buy a World Coin Book you need it.

I'll say if the seller is reputable the list price is $40 and that is when silver was $12.00.

There was only 1 1975 proof set and it 2 silver coins of exactly what the seller listed.

The whole package is always best but at that price it is fine without.

As a reference any old book is fine, there is even a downloadable version.

Right know I have to go to work and will not be able to answer your proof question until almost 24 hours later.

Hi,
Thanks for all your help. I won the bid on the 1975 $100 Belize gold coin for the price of $112 which I believe is a bargain price compared to $120 catalogue value.

Can you please tell me the reason why the 1976 $100 Belize gold coin is listed at a catalogue value of $175 as I believe the agw in both the coins is the same. I could have also got 1976 $100 Belize coin for $120 but I chose the former as the final price was lesser by 8$ and closer to the bullion value.

Did I commit a blunder by not going for the 1976 $100 Belize coin which is listed at a higher CV ? If yes I can purchase the 1976 $100 belize coin for $120 and put the 1975 $100 coin for sale. Please advise.

I received my world coin catalogue today and henceforth would be referring to it while bidding on the coins. If I win any coin at a price which is lower than the catalogue value mentioned Is it considered a good deal?

Thanks

In addition to the above query I just wanted to ask the reason why the sellers are selling many of these Franklin mint gold coin with collector packaging informational card at the present bullion value of the gold? Are they worth only their bullion value?

What is the premium price that can be expected over the bullion value for these coins? In my case the gold bullion value of the $100 Belize gold coin itself is $110. In essence I paid just 2 dollars above the bullion value of gold.

How should I go about in collecting Franklin mint gold coin and what is the maximum premium which can be paid (you would pay) over the bullion value?

Thanks and sorry for the long query. But I am a bit rattled and confused.

Because there were 3 varieties and I quoted the most common.

Did I commit a blunder..
It's not a blunder if you enjoy what you bought.

The book is a guide and was written when gold and silver were at lower prices. Keep looking at other auctions and forums to see what most people are paying.

Are they worth only their bullion value?
At least in the US there is little interest in foreign coins other than Canada and Mexico.

premium price that can be expected over the bullion value
It varies from 5%-20%.

How should I go about in collecting Franklin mint gold coin and what is the maximum premium which can be paid (you would pay) over the bullion value?
I think there is a specialty book and forum for Franklin Mint coins because there are some rare varieties not listed in the World Coin book.
Unfortunately I don't know the name of eithers.

I have found a 9 coin Austria 1964 set from my father's collection? What is its value? There is 50 schilling (Man High Ski jump), 25 schilling, 10 schilling, 5 schilling, 1 schilling, 50, 10, 5 and 2 groschen (portraits of some people).

I also found a 100 schilling Austria 1979 coin with a cathedral at the back and an eagle at the front. What is its value? Is there any silver in any of the above coins ? If yes which ones and how much ? What is the best price I can get if I sell both of these?

Thanks,

Rick

9 coin Austria 1964 set about $75.00 but if the 25 Schilling has leaves above the word SCHILLING it maybe worth more.

50 SCHILLING 0.9000 Silver 0.5787 oz. ASW
25 SCHILLING 0.8000 Silver 0.3344 oz. ASW
10 SCHILLING 0.6400 Silver 0.1543 oz. ASW
5 SCHILLING 0.6400 Silver 0.1070 oz. ASW

100 schilling Austria 1979 coin with a cathedral at the back and an eagle at the front.
100 SCHILLING 0.6400 Silver 0.4924 oz. ASW
About $14.00

In an auction it depends and I can't guess on final prices.

Hi,
As promised I won another 1974 Jamaica set with COA for $30 which is the value of silver content in the coins. I missed on the 1972 Trinidad Tobago set as I had bit maximum 35$ and it sold for 36$. But I believe I got the Jamaica set at a bargain. What do you think?

Thanks for all your help.

Are there any silver coins in the set or are they all non silver clad? If yes which one and their content? The seller has not mentioned anything in the listing.

Hi Man,
I've been looking at your work and wondered if you could help me with the value of there Bahama gold coins:

1967 $10 pf 69
1967 $50 pf 69 Santa Mario ultra cameo
1976 $100 pf 69 Amazon Patriot ultra cameo
1992 $10 pf 66

Thanks.

Man said...

Bahama gold coins:

1967 $10 pf 69 about $1,400.00
1967 $50 pf 69 Santa Mario ultra cameo about $6,000.00
1976 $100 pf 69 Amazon Patriot ultra cameo about $1,650.00
1992 $10 pf 66 ships or flamingos?

These are just estimates as I have not seen any graded Bahamas gold for years. They maybe a lot more or less you would need to know how many were actually certified PF-69.

Hi,
I have won the following 8 proof sets for $54

ALL BOXED SEALED SETS

JAMAICA
2 sets - 1970
1 set - 1971

TRINIDAD TOBAGO
2 sets -1971
1 set - 1970

ISLE OF MAN
2 sets - 1971

Did I overbid on the item? Was it a good price?
Can you please tell me the denominations of coins in each set and their mintage? Are there any silver coins in any of the sets? If yes which ones and their content? It was an impulse purchase and now I am worried I have overbid on the sets. Please advise as to what is the catalogue value and present value of the sets.

Thanks a ton.

Anonymous said...

One more thing I had heard that there are normally 2 version of sets in the same years one with the silver coin and the other non silver set. Is this true? How many coins should be present and what denomination in each of the above sets when I receive it? Please mention different versions of sets in the above query if any?

Thanks

Anonymous said...

I am sorry in relation to the above query I wanted to know whether the 1970 and 1971 Trinidad Tobago proof set consists of 6 or 7 coins as from the pictures I can vaguely see only 6 coins but On another T&T 1971 set listing from other sellers I have seen 7 coins with seller listing the biggest one $5 coin as silver ? I am really anxious. Please give whatever information you can give at the earliest. Do I have recourse to any action if the seller listed the set as proof sets and has removed the $5 silver coin from the set.

Thanks

Man said...

$54 for all that is good

ALL BOXED SEALED SETS

1 set - 1970 6 coins about $13 each set

ISLE OF MAN

Unfortunately I do not have the time or patience to go list silver content or individual coins. Don't take the next comment personal.

Buy a World Coin Book!

There has been a rush of bidders begging for silver content. Obviously not coin collectors but people dying for silver in hope of reaping huge profits before 2012 or some other foolish reason.

I collect for fun and help those who are curious, hoarders do not count.

A real coin collectors starts with the books then they buys coins.

I can't tell you what to bid since I'm collecting for fun and not profit, if this offends then run out and buy a book...seriously it's available at discount and download.

I know consider bid help as spam and will deal with them accordingly.

Anonymous said...

I am sorry to offend you. I just started getting interest in this field and I am not a die hard collector of coins per se. But it would help me to know if there are any silver coins in the above 8 sets I won. Has T&T issued 6 coin 1971 set officially. I was under the impression that there were 7 coins in the set issued by T&T and the largest $5 coin was silver. I will take your advice and buy a coin book. Please don't take my query to your heart.

Thanks

Man said...

Again it's not personal but I got 40 questions asking about silver content that I just deleted but I will continue answering those who just started collecting.

T&T issued 6 coin 1971 set officially. I was under the impression that there were 7 coins in the set issued by T&T and the largest $5 coin was silver.
They issued two sets...
(6 coin set $13)
DOLLAR Copper-Nickel, 32 mm

(7 coin set $18) has...
5 DOLLARS 0.9250 Silver 0.8832 oz.
DOLLAR 100% Nickel, 36mm

So the difference besides the normal copper-nickel coins is a special 100% nickel dollar was added that is bigger for the 7 coin set and a $5 silver also.

The Nina, Pinta and Santa Maria commemorative 1992 Bahamas $100 Discovery of the New World gold coin there was only 400 minted
Two versions were made:
Normal: 5,000,000 it's about $200.00.
Matte: 400 it's about $250.00

If you do not describe the matte finish I assume it was the more common variety.

Be aware I'm also assuming a low grade.

In addition the matte mintage of 400 in unconfirmed it may be as high as 500 or as low as 300.

bought for $265 i have receipt here so how can coin only be worth $200 now??

Anyone who knows about coin collecting knows that coins lose value especially foreign coins.
The reason these coins stay so low is that the original price is very inflated.

In the Helvetia coin there is a picture of a lady sitting with a sword on one hand and resting against a shield on the other and Helvetia is written on the bottom at the back there are 2 huts(building) at the backdrop of a mountain and 5 unzen and 1987 written at the bottom. I hope this description helps you to ascertain whether it is a coin or not?

It was very sweet of you to help me. I really appreciate your kind gesture. Thanks a lot. I was looking at other alternatives to find out the value of the coins. I understand that your primary purpose is to help people who are new to the field of collecting coins. But you really have a big heart to help others who are not coin collector's per se but who would like to know the value of the coins in their possession and would like to sell it (myself).

On a side and final note where can I get the best price for my coins - ebay, local coin shop, jewellery store etc. Your advice would be really welcome.

This is a 5 Ounce Bullion coin
0.999 Silver 4.9947 oz. ASW
it is not listed in any book I know of so I don't know the mintage. It is technically listed under Medallic Coinage but that is just bullion to me. The scene is the Matterhorn.
About $200.00 but it is hard to say.

Ebay is your best bet if you are not active if coin forums.

The coins are of the following denomination
