Welcome to the Bahamas

Do you have a coin form the Bahamas Island and want to know its value? Leave a comment/question and I will do my best to find out the price and history for you.

Continuing with some decent looking coins from the bag I bought is some from the Bahamas.

While half of the coins were normal circulated types they did include some proofs. Which is not all that great because the circulating issues were actual rarer then the proof. For example the 1972 10 Cents had 11,000 coins minted while the proofs numbered 35,000. It's harder to find a brilliant uncirculated than an untouched proof.

Obverse above.

Reverse below.
These coins were made by the Franklin Mint in the U.S.A. in matte, special uncirculated, and proof. The little stylized F on the reverse is the mark of the Franklin Mint. Matte is basically the circulated coins, special uncirculated is like proof but all completely mirrored. Proof has the background mirrored and frosted designs.

Starting from right to left.
Here are the stats for these Bahamas coins...
Type/Country: 10 Cents Proof/Bahamas
Year: 1972
Mint: Franklin Mint
Mintage: 35,000
Metal: Copper-Nickel
Value: $1.00 if untouched

Type/Country: 25 Cents Proof/Bahamas
Year: 1971
Mint: Franklin Mint
Mintage: 31,000
Metal: Nickel
Value: $1.50 if untouched

Type/Country: 50 Cents Proof/Bahamas
Year: 1973
Mint: Franklin Mint
Mintage: 35,000
Metal: 80% Silver
Value: $7.00 if untouched($1.00 in crease since 2008)

These were sold in sets but if they were less then perfect they were cut out and put into circulation by collectors.

What would be fair market value ( or good price to pay ) for the below 2 coins:-

1. Isle of Man 1987 AmerIca's cup challenge Fremantle 10 crown 10oz. silver coin .999 I which has toned significantly from both sides. What is its montage ?

2. Gibraltar 1994 Solid as a Rock 40 crown 40oz. silver coin .999 in original capsule of issue. What is its mintage and value if

a. In pristine condition
B. Some hairlines and scratches on the coin.

Are the above 2 only bullion coins or do they command any additional numismatic/collector value above their melt value?

Also does toning on coins depreciates their collector value ? Can milk spots on silver coins and reddish brown spots on gold coins reduce their collector value? Should I keep the coins as it is or try to remove those spots which visually is not very appealing.

1. Isle of Man 1987 AmerIca's cup challenge Fremantle 10 crown 10oz. silver coin .999 I which has toned significantly from both sides. What is its montage ?
--Mintage: 2,000
About $300.00

2. Gibraltar 1994 Solid as a Rock 40 crown 40oz. silver coin .999 in original capsule of issue. What is its mintage and value if
--Mintage: About 1,500

a. In pristine condition
--About $1,450.00

B. Some hairlines and scratches on the coin.
About $850.00

Are the above 2 only bullion coins or do they command any additional numismatic/collector value above their melt value?
--They are collectable and hard to find.

Also does toning on coins depreciates their collector value?
--Not always toning is natural and is not considered when estimating value.

Can milk spots on silver coins and reddish brown spots on gold coins reduce their collector value?
--Yes, that is damage.

Should I keep the coins as it is or try to remove those spots which visually is not very appealing.
--Never clean these coins in any way.

Hi,

I required your opinion on which would be a better buy from among the below three in the long run which would command a better premium at time of sale:-

1990 AUSTRALIAN NUGGET .9999 GOLD PROOF 3 COIN SET Uncirculated Grey Kangaroo 1/4, 1/10 and 1/20 oz in wooden display unit for $540

or

1977 Bermuda Silver Jubilee Proof 3 coin set .900 gold, .925 silver

Larger $100 gold coin is 8.1 grams, smaller $50 gold coin is 4.05 grams, giant $25 silver coin is 55 grams for $500

I also have an option of purchasing Brilliant uncirculated of the above set for $500.

Which would be a better buy? I am thinking of requesting the seller to consider some discount but not sure whether I would get it. All the three come in their original packaging and case of issue. Thanks

I am looking at these from purely investment point of view and would like your opinion on which might appreciate significantly in value if I have to sell these 15 to 20 years down the line. Which among the above options would command a bullion plus some significant collector value ? Thanks

Sorry for the late reply but this is the best bet, despite the low price for silver now gold is a better investment.

If he becomes a saint these will keep increasing in value. Not to mention Columbia is not stable so their coins and gold medals are often melted or confiscated in drug deals.

What is the gold content, mintage and market value of 2004 Malta 5 coin gold set ( Knights of Malta depicting Pope John Paul II )in original packaging in pristine condition ? The denomination on the coins are 10000 L, 5000 L, 2500 L, 1000 L, 500 L.

Is this a rare and valuable set which might appreciate in future ? There is no marking with regard to gold content and purity as is the case with Australian and Canadian bullion coins. Is this factor going to affect the resale ? Is investing in this set a good and wise investment. What percentage of premium over the spot price of gold can be paid for this set? Thanks

One more thing will it be better to buy gold coins with gold content and purity mentioned on the coin for investment purpose as relation to the one where content and purity is not mentioned for liquidity purpose as in the above instance? Your valuable advise will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

10000 L about $1,650.00
5000 L about $825.00
2500 L about $410.00
1000 L about $205.00
500 L about $102.00

Is this a rare and valuable set which might appreciate in future ?
--1,000 were made and all survived so it will only go up if gold goes up.

There is no marking with regard to gold content and purity as is the case with Australian and Canadian bullion coins. Is this factor going to affect the resale ?
--No coin and gold collectors can easily look this up.

Is investing in this set a good and wise investment. What percentage of premium over the spot price of gold can be paid for this set?
--Depends on the coin but usually 10% to 20%

No, again we live in the internet age so finding rarity and content is pretty easy. If you try a sell a coin and the buyer says he can't find the gold content leave because he is incompetent.

Hi,

I recently acquired a 2013 Somali Republic 2000 shilling 1 kg .999 silver round ( with privy mark ) year of the snake for $570 in original mint packaging in pristine condition.

I was searching for more information on this coin on the internet but I was not successful in getting concrete information on this coin other than that it was minted by the bavarian mint in Germany. It's origin, history and legal tender status is a mystery. I found out that it is a part of a African Wildlife series ( Somali Elephant ) which has been going on from the year 2004 every year in different denomination and varieties like 1 0z bu, proof, high relief, kilo etc. I have been unsuccessful inspite of my best efforts in finding more info on the Kilo coins in this series on the net.

Can you please tell me whether this coin is legal tender issued on behalf of the Somali Govt ?

What is its mintage ?

Did I buy this round for a fair price or did I overpay for this coin ?

What is its fair market value now if I would like to sell this ?

Also I am not able to find the KM number as well as information on this coin in Standard catalog of world coins by Krause publications.

Is this coin a keeper whose value will appreciate in the future or is it best if I liquidate the coin now for whatever I get ? Am I at least assured of 1 kg .999 silver in this round to at least liquidate it for the spot price of silver ?

Thanks and hoping to receive answers for all the queries raised by me in respect of this coin from you. I will really appreciate if you can share some history and throw some light on this huge silver Kilo coin.

Hi was wondering if my buffalo nickel with indian on it is worth anything?

Sorry for the ridiculously late response but I was real busy for a while.

Can you please tell me whether this coin is legal tender issued on behalf of the Somali Govt ?
--This in not legal tender and was not officially authorized. That said Somalia has bigger issues then someone issuing coins in there name. As long as the coins are as advertised they will probably accept them in the future as official collectibles.

What is its mintage ?
--Unknown, probably made to order 2,000 or less.

Did I buy this round for a fair price or did I overpay for this coin ? What is its fair market value now if I would like to sell this ?
--Fair value although melt value is currently about $510 it still is a nice piece of art.

Also I am not able to find the KM number as well as information on this coin in Stndard catalog of world coins by Krause publications.
--Not listed and probably will not be for a while.

Is this coin a keeper whose value will appreciate in the future or is it best if I liquidate the coin now for whatever I get ? Am I at least assured of 1 kg .999 silver in this round to at least liquidate it for the spot price of silver ?
--Due to the inability to find records it will most likely never have more than 10% over melt value to most buyers.

Again being an unofficial coin makes it not s valued.

My father passed on a 1977 Keeling Cocos Islands 150 Rupees coin with image of some "John Clunies Ross" on one side and "image of beach with 1 coconut or palm tree" on the other side in a coin flip. It looks in good condition without any noticeable or visible marks or scratches. Just a couple of minor marks on the edges. Can you please tell me whether this is a gold coin as it is golden in colour ? Also is this a rare coin and number of coins minted along with its value today ?

I have also received a 1975 Republica de nicaragua America Central 1000 cordobas gold coin with the national emblem on one side an image of a liberty bell on the other side. It has 8.64 GR ORO FINO LEY 900 marked on it. What does this mean ? Is this a rare coin and how many coins have been minted ? The coin is sealed in a plastic cover and in original green box. What is its present market value ? Thanks

Rick said...

In continuation of the above mail with regard to the 1977 Keeling cocos islands 150 rupees coin, I found the coin being listed for Buy it Now price of around US $750 to $850 with the sellers mentioning them as gold but no info on actual gold content and mintage but I also checked one completed listing where the coin was sold for around US$390. So what is the actual gold content and real market value of this coin ?

With regard to the 1975 Nicaragua 1000 cordobas gold coin a couple of sellers have listed the NGC certified Nicaragua coin for around US $700 but I have seen a couple of completed auctions on eBay where the final value realised was around $390. I am really confused by this vast difference in values and just wanted to know what is the fair price I can expect for both these coins presently and whether it would appreciate in the future if I decide to keep it in the locker and sell after a few years. Your blog is really good and helpful and hopefully you can help a confused soul. Thank you in advance.
