Finally I Got A Star

Do you have an star note and want to know its value? Leave a comment/question and I will do my best to find out the price and history for you.

While I'm happy so many people are finding star notes it has been a while since I got one. Mostly since I hardly use cash anymore.

Then on September 25 I got this bill in my change. It is a 2003A F-Atlanta series star note.

The back is normal as you can tell.

The star note is a replacement note used by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing when a defect or error is found on the regular run of notes. There is no replacement of specific serial number instead they replace blocks of notes with the newest star notes. Since less then 1% of notes need replacement star notes are scarce.

Still they are not rare since they are printed by the hundred thousand or million. They are printed in runs of a specific amount and the lower the run the more it is worth to collectors.
  • Less than 320,000 printed is lowest.
  • Exactly 320,000 printed is very-low.
  • Between 320,000 and 640,000 is low.
  • Exactly 640,000 is medium.
  • More than 640,000 is high and normal.

Type/Country: 1 Dollar/United States
Year: 2003A
Printings: 3,200,000
Run: 4th from F09600001* - F12800000*
Value: $2.50 in VF

It has plenty of folds and is probably worth less then listed, but that is true with most collectibles.

Do you have currency and want to know its value? Leave a comment/question and I will do my best to find out the price and history for you.

1663 dollars worth, for Comments/Questions click here.:

Hi, this is my first time to this site as I also didn't know that there had been someone like you on here that likes to help others find out more about what they really own. I collect a many number of things, such as comics (1960's-2000), coins (as I see else where on here that you can help me out on... Any suggestions on Buffalo nickels (1920's, very clear and dates all visible?)), Diamonds (Est. $10,000), Art/Antiques (as early as 1610... Like this map of mine on Rice Paper and many other antique works of art on rice paper and more), sports cards (Over 50,000), certain kinds of stones and gems (rocks even with what looks to be like gold in it or, a river or "line" of what seems like silver running throughout the rock) and other things... I just need a ton of help to figure out how much everything could be and if I can sell most of it. I have been collecting since I was like 10 or 11. Can you help with any of the other things? I even have hundreds of stamps (Many 1920's in what I would say is Mint Condition an very been used... One of which had a market value of over $300 last year when I called one company up... I don't think that they believed that a guy so young as myself could have had this one, as I told them the correct color and everything, but what got them was that I had said that I own (for which I had recounted with her over the phone) that I had 16 of them). I even thought about grading these items, but I am not made up of money as I have invested much in what I already own over the past years... Now I just need to sell much of this and really get things going for myself again. I'm sure that you understand. Thanks for the help by the way! Here are my "Stars":

All listed below are "Green-backs". (Instead of listing all data on here, I will do as many have before me and only list the main serial number, and year, etc. When I am collecting my own data on my currency, I normally take down everything though.

$1:

(2003) G 08594818 * (Bill #7... 7 is the set of same # on front of the bills. Normally listed from 1-12).

Buffalo nickels (1920's, very clear and dates all visible?...
These average $2.50 in good the key date is 1921-S at $70.00.

As for your other collectibles I have no clue. Maybe PCGS and their forum CollectorsUniverse would help.

(Bill #7... 7 is the set of same # on front of the bills. Normally listed from 1-12).
This is not important because the first letter of the serial number means the same thing.

More important on certain dates is the front or back number I'll say which if applicable.
I'll assume crisp-uncirulated for anything past 1990 and very-fine for all older notes.

$1
(2003) G 08594818 * about $2.50
(2003) G 01304225 * about $2.50
(2001) L 01386885 * about $3.00
(2001) F 05763817 * about $2.50

(1999) C 13595572 * about $1.50
(1999) B 07660193 * about $2.50
(1988A) G 11162796 * about $4.50
$10-(1999) BK 05412579 * about $15.00
$20-(2004) EJ 03083640 * about $25.00
$20-(1990) B 10347474 M about $25.00

$2 Bills:
(2003A) L 04125428 A about $2.50
(1995) all listed about $2.00 each
(1976) about $3.00 each except
1976 A-A are about $4.00 each

$1:
(2003) L 05888882 A <=== So many 8's
Not enough, no extra value.

(1993) G 08447929 D about $1.25
(1993) G 07689966 D about $1.25

(1993) A 00087249 B <=== Lower Number!!!

Thanks for the help... Actually most of the bills past 1990 are in awesome condition.... $2 bills, out of 27 of the bills, only one may not be as fine of condition... 26 of which are as green as the day that they were made, fine corners, no "dings" or holes. All in protective sleeves and been protected as such for over 8 years in my own possession. Most other bills beyond 1990, are crisped as well and protected as such. So, you know nothing about stamps? Have any suggestions of anyone that could help out like this? I have a pretty nice collection.

You know much about silver dollar coins? I own Morgans, Walking Liberty's, one Franklin (unless this is really a Liberty Bell half-dollar), and that really big one... a few of them. .50 cent pieces, over 50 coins.... Many JFK, even the complete collection. Also, a few older quarters.... Will list later... Quarters are of one 1925, and of a militant wearing this funny looking helmet with the points that come out on both ends. There is also this one penny dated either 1886 or 1888. I need to find it to make sure. Many coins not mentioned here.... Huge amounts of silver, some gold, etc. You know anything about silver bars? I have one (silver bar, 12oz, in a protected case... Very Nice!).

Perhaps a stamp forum or just get the annual Stamp Price Guide.

Yes, I like them better than gold.

Quarters are of one 1925
About $3.50 in good, the figure is that of Liberty in the act of protection.

You know anything about silver bars?
Unless from a sunken ship or older than the 1900s they are just worth their weight in silver.

What are the specifications which define a bill as "uncirculated"? I have two star bills which came in a stack of new sequential bills directly from the bank. Are these still considered uncirculated or are they just mint condition bills?

The bills are as follows:
2006 $1 F00006030*
2006 $1 F00006031*

Do you know their value?

Thank you for your time!

Unicirculated and Mint are the same. When going up to Choice Crisp Uncirculated then those are only found from fresh stacks but theoretically it is possible to find in circulation.
Basically it is just an opinion.

Uncirculated = New bill, never used, clean and crisp, may have minor pin holes and a corner tip fold not into design.

2006 $1 F00006030* about $70.00
2006 $1 F00006031* about $65.00

I lowered the second bill because the numbers weren't as fancy but for some it may not matter.

The blue ink is damage.

Hey Man,

I work at a bank and have come across a $250.00 strap of uncirculated, consecutive $5 star notes.

The serial number starts with DL09279487* and goes up to DL09279536*. The year is 2003. Please let me know if these are worth holding on to.

Thanks.

These are the more common variety and average about $15.00 and currently don't sell as well as the DL032200001*-DL3520000* which had a shorter run.

It is a hard to say if they will gain or lose value but if you can keep some aside it is fine, no great loss if you can't keep most.

I have a stack of 100 uncirculated sequential 1976 $2 bills. All 100 are star notes.

Serial numbers are:
G00785101* through
G00785200*

The bank band is still in place and the bills are very crisp -- were stored in a safe deposit box.

I would appreciate an estimate of their worth. Is it better to try to sell all 100 or to break them up into smaller lots? Thanks.

About $25.00 each total and it would be better to keep them together. The economy is still tough if you can't sell them as a whole breaking them into more affordable lots is fine.

If these could be graded at choice-uncirculated they would be about $60.00 each. The Chicago stars are one of the better.

Thanks for your fast response regarding my 100 $2 sequential star bills.

It sounds like I need to have them graded to realize my maximum potential from them.

I live in Portland, Oregon. Is there a reputable place out here where I could take these to be graded?

Thanks for any suggestions.

Sounds good it would be an ordeal to have them graded.

Good luck.

About $175.00 assuming very-fine it may not be worth grading if less then very-fine which is defined by light folds, light discoloration, and not crisp.

I did some spelunking and found a guide for grading paper currency, in my estimation it would fall as fine, or very good. Would it still be worth looking into? Also. where do you get your numbers from?

(sorry to be a bother, i just cant find any site that has a "sliding scale" so to speak)

Man said...

In those grades it would be about $125.00 or less.

I go by the books, monthly price guides, honest dealers that I know, Heritage auctions, and of course eBay.

I understand the pricing problem after trying to sell some coins and given shockingly low prices or bad advice from dealers.

I'm giving a good estimate but the reason I say "about" is it can be 20% more or less. Star notes are always wanted but these days high quality is what sells fast.

If it's a proof coin it would comeback PR-70 of PF-70.
If you know about grading then just look over the coin under high magnification and if you think it's perfect then it just might be.
Borrow a grading book from the library and try to learn all you can.

Currently they are going for about $500.00 and grading fees may be up to $40 so as long as you spent less than $350 for the coin and you know how to sell in auction, if necessary for the future. It is worth it.
If you want to keep it for life and just want it graded then it's an even choice.

Only if you see an obvious flaw or have bad feeling about the coin then avoid grading.

Your gut is the best judge, but a grading book may help.

Yes.There is something called a Dropped letter or it was struck through an object leaving a shape of a 7.
These are generally $50.00 or more but must be verified because it may be damage or a fake.

About $75.00 it's common with 3.2 million made.

About $1.25 in very-fine.

whats so special about barr notes from what i hear?why would people have interest in these?
Because Joseph W. Barr spent only a few months in office. They only notes his signature are on are these $1, but they are fairly common since so many dollars are made.

About $2.50 each.

Where would you recommend I try and sell these? I haven't really seen anything like this on ebay? And I'm assuming I should sell them all together to get them to be worth $2.50 a piece? And what would be a reasonable price to ask for all 50 of them?

They are always being sold on eBay and as a group the value is less than $2.50 each.

This value is for a high grade that has been certified. These days it's better to sell to private dealers if still ungraded. Try a coin forum but don't expect much these days as everyone is focusing on gold and silver not modern notes.

What would you say is a good percentage of value above the actual value of the bill to keep it?
Good question.
I would say about 50% or above face value but it also depends on history. Newer notes take time to settle in value.
Older notes like the 1996 $100 bill will probably stay this low for the next few decades.
Really old notes(pre-1934) jump up and down in value as more of them get graded.

Except for the 2006 $1 if you spent the rest of the notes on anything else it would be fine, want to invest in something by some silver or gold as that tend to always go up.
