Ask and Ye Shall Receive, Change

Do you have a coin and want to know its value? Leave a comment/question and I will do my best to find out the price and history for you.

On February 12, 2007 I wrote about the release of the new presidential dollars in NYC that took place that same month. I complained about the time that new circulating coins reach my pockets in form of change.

A few days ago chrys wrote this comment...

I have not seen the dollar as change you get from the shops but apparently some car parks ticket machine will spit some. My husband came home with a bunch of them and a few of those with errors.
I wrote back...
That's great chrys I try to tell people not to buy them unless it is from the official government website.

It is better to receive them in your change but it takes time. The debuted in NYC where I live and I have yet to see one.

There are currently 5 "errors" known for these coins. At first they were selling at $300.00 a piece now they are so common that they sell for $2.00 if you're lucky. We will have to wait 1-5 years to see which errors are valuable and which are way too common.

Great finds hold on to them.
The next day BAM! I got 3 new dollars in my change along with a Trinidad and Tobago cent. I thank chrys for the added luck.

Here they go.

The top is a Trinidad & Tobago cent and an image of its reverse. The front has some stuff stuck on it.
The next 3 are the presidential dollars I got. The two in the middle have Washington face up and the edge lettering readable in the normal way. The last dollar has Washington facing up and the edge lettering is upside down.

These upside down "errors" seem to run about 50-50 or maybe 40-60 in favor of right side up. It is not a true error since the mint did not say whether or not the edge lettering should go up or down. At the end they are too common and are worth the same.

I got my 2008 Redbook by R.S. Yeoman and all future prices will reflect that, I'll also try to update any older values I given out.

Here are the stats for each type of coin...
Type/Country: 1 Cent/Trinidad & Tobago
Year: 2002
Mintage: Unknown
Metal: Bronze
Value: $0.05 in Fine(If I can safely remove the gunk.)

Type/Country: 1 Dollar (Right Side Up Edge)/United States of America
Year: 2007P
Mintage: Estimated 176,680,000 (Final numbers may take years)
Metal: 77% copper, 12% zinc, 7% manganese, 4% nickel
Value: $1.00 in MS-60 or less

Type/Country: 1 Dollar(Upside Down Edge)/United States of America
Year: 2007P
Mintage: Estimated 176,680,000 (Final numbers may take years)
Metal: 77% copper, 12% zinc, 7% manganese, 4% nickel
Value: $1.00 in MS-60 or less

Note that the metal content for the dollars are for outer layers only that are bonded to an inner layer of pure copper. This is a more accurate metal content; 88.5% Copper, 6% Zinc, 3.5% Manganese, and 2% Nickel.

Do you have a coin and want to know its value? Leave a comment/question and I will do my best to find out the price and history for you.

Well done! You know when the error was first "publicize" a few fetched more than $500 a piece.

Years ago I found an off-center statehood quarter and was offered $150 for it then within a few months dozens of them appeared on eBay and it is now worth only $50.

I'm glad I kept it since it is the only off-center error I ever found in my change.

i have a 1926 penny and i was wondering if there worth anything?

Man said...

1926 penny

In good condition it is about $0.20.

A friend had a 2 dollar bill but the series is 2003. Is this possible? I thought dollar bill had been removed in circulation back in 1990s.

Man said...

$2 bill series 2003 is normal .

They even came out more the series is up to 2003-A.

Since 1976 they made the 1995, 2003, and 2003A. Many were made for collectors as uncut sheets but millions were released for circulation.

In circulated condition a 2003 $2 is worth only $2.00 if it is a star note then it is about $6.00.

Hi, I have this book that I have found entitled "Eisenhower Dollars 1971-1978" It is filled without any dollar coin missing. How much is it worth? I'll take pictures if needed.
Thank you for any help.

Man said...

"Eisenhower Dollars 1971-1978"

A complete set will contain 32 coins in mint and proof states it averages about $300.00. If these are circulated expect 1/3 the value.

julie said...

The book actually contains 35 coins. Where can I possibly cash this in? Any recommendations?

Man said...

Nice you have all the varieties. I didn't mention the extras because some older albums don't have them.

Any coin shop in your area will pay but expect $200, I never had good times with coin shops.

EBay is also great maybe selling them individually. But the problem is you may lose money due to all the fees.

Join a coin forum because you may sell them or they can give a name of honest dealers. That is what I did and it is great.

Here is a good forum lurk and read the post search for shop in your area. LINK to Forum

Got a few old coins I've somehow inherited that I'm mostly just curious about, none in very good condition:

American V nickel, 1904

One so faded I can hardly read it, says 10 Centesimi on one side, something about Emanuele II Italia on the other

Deutcsches Mark Reich, 1 Mark, 1874

10 Maroc Francs, 1371

One just says "50", written in Arabic, I assume Moroccan, years 1974/1394

1 Norwegian Krone, 1957

One from 1947, says Fem Öre on one side, Med Folket For Fosterlandet on the other

Danmark, 2 Kroner, 1925

One that says Konig V, Preussen on one side, Spiel Mark on the other

British(?) penny, 1921 (copper colored, about the size of a US half-dollar)

Any help you could give would be most appreciated.

Thanks,

Russ

All values are in very good.

1904 nickel U.S. about $2.50

10 Centesimi Italy
Emanuele II 1827-1867 about $2.50
Emanuele III 1908-1943 about $0.50

1874 1 Mark Germany about $2.00

1371(1951) 10 Maroc(Morocco) Francs about $0.10

1974/1394 50 Santimat Morocco about $0.10

1957 1 Norwegian Krone about $0.10

1947 5 Öre Sweden about $0.15

1925 2 Kroner Denmark about $1.00

Prussian(Germany) Spiel means play so it maybe a gaming token I'm not sure.

1921 Great Britain penny about $0.15

All are pretty common and of course if the grade higher the are worth more. Still a nice start.

Update the German Spiel Marke is most likely a Jeton which are about $5.00 if it can attributed to a specific time.

That is very kind of you but I'm good.

Feel free to give them to someone else or release them into the wild, by using them as change.

This is German "play money" or "game counter" it was made in the 1860's, basically it's a gambling chip.
They are very common and this type is about $10.00.

1970D, 1938D, all 1921-1933, 1919-D-S, all 1916-1917.
anything before 1915.

Were you to sell them to coin shop you'll get 90% of the silver content so about $4.10 per coin. If you sell them online expect $7.00 per coin but it would be more difficult.

So between $4.50 and $7.00 is fair.

I recently aquired a full unopened roll of 1954 quarters, but when I looked at the back on the end one it appeared to have a D mint mark but had an extra curve in the center of the d. It kind of looks like it was supposed to be an S there instead. What do you think? Is this valuable or does anything like this exist on the books? I can try to get a picture of it if it would help, but I would probably have to open the roll to get a good picture. Does that hurt the value?

First thought is it may be a 1950D/S which in mint state is $300, just because the roll says 1954 doesn't mean a few are from 1950 or earlier.

There are no official 1954 varieties in any books but it may exist, it would be at least twice the value of the 1950D/S.

I would keep it in the roll and try to get good pictures and post them somewhere to see if it can be identified just from the reverse.
