Hi,My name is Tina Wilson.I have been holding on to this penny for a long time.It is a silver penny dated 1959.It is really shiny, but what is making me wonder about it -is that it has a rim around it.It is not like any other penny I have ever seen. The rim is making the edges of it rounded instead of flat.Could you please help me?Also, since I was a little girl my parents held a coin for me.They said that when I grow up I could have it.It is still at their house. It is about as big as a dollar coin and it has the pope on it.It is dated 1976 I think. What is that?
Question #1:
Your silver penny may be a real error this is done when a blank dime was pressed with penny dies. It is a rare example and the average Red Book value is $1,00000. A 1960 silver penny was recently sold on eBay for $90100.

Image is from the Fred Weinberg site and all rights are reserved for his company.

Here is an example from http://www.fredweinberg.com/ being sold for $2,15000. They have other examples for you to compare with here and there.

Question #2:
While many countries make Pope coins the only example of 1976 Pope Paul VI are medals which tend to be dollar size. The Pope medals ranges from $40-$90 in silver and ten times that price for gold.

To be sure I would have to see the coin/medal you can always take a picture or scan it and use a free site like flickr or imageshack or photobucket and leave a link in my comments section.

I hope this was helpful. One small problem is that fakes of both types exist as for the silver penny if it weighs 3.11 grams it maybe fake, if it weighs 2.50 grams you have the real thing.

Next we have...

I HAVE A 1944 WHEAT PENNY THATS MISSING THE 1

It a very common error that occurs when grease clogs up the die here is an example from Coin World, the image links back to a more detailed state quarter error.

Most common on filled die errors are missing digits or letters such as the L in LIBERTY, or in your case the 1 in 1944.

These coins are rarely worth anything more then a few cents above the collector's value of a regular coin. So your 10¢ coin is at most now 20¢ probably 15¢.

Thanks Tina and other person for your visit, come back anytime.

brilliant silver color penny from 1987. A little thicker than a normal penny otherwise the same size. Brilliant MS70 type luster. Found in my grandfather's coin collection. Happy to send photos.

Sounds like a plated fake, most errors never reach MS-70 level.

Weigh it to see if it is a real error or plated.

I have a 1988 quarter with smooth edges and was curious about its value.

1988 quarter with smooth edges

Damaged, no extra value.

The commonly gets wore down first.

I have a 1983 penny with the shape of the state of MA with "MA" inside stamped into it directly infront of Lincoln's profile. Its weird. Idk if its worth anything. Just wanted an answer as to why its like that. I searched online but couldn't find anything.

State pennies were made unofficially by 3rd party companies. Sold as collectibles by the thousands.

They are considered damaged by real collectors and have no extra value.

I have a 1974 dime that is really dull its silver but no shine it also has a partial collar Im not sure what to make of it? Any help would b great

Man said...

1974 dime that is really dull its silver but no shine it also has a partial collar

The dull finish could be improperly annealed or just damage, that I cannot judge even in pictures.

The partial collar adds about $5.00 in value if circulated.

To get it certified as a double error it would need to be examined in hand by experts but I doubt it would be more than $30.00 unfortunately cost is about $60 to grade.

I have a 2001 Rhode Island quarter. There is a faint indentation of a exact circle that almost perfectly fits around George Washington's entire head and bust. Any thoughts? Thanks!

Either it got stuck in a coin machine or it was a Die Clash error.

No extra value for either.

I have a penny that is the size of a dime and appears to be smooth on the front and back. I can barely make out Lincoln's profile and it's from 1970 something. Any idea what it might possibly be?

Probably sat in water or was stuck in a machine.

Not sure what you mean by "Die Cut", maybe post a picture somewhere and that would clear it up.

How would you like me to send you the picture? I don't know what that means either, it was written on the penny bag when I acquired it. It has a notch missing at the 3 o'clock mark, but the edges are smooth so almost like an error at the mint.

Use a free photo site like imgur.com and copy and paste the link.

Sounds like a Clipped Planchet error for pennies they are common among errors and are usually $3.00 or less.

I don't know why it's so blurry…I hope it helps!

I have a 1990 no mint mark penny that is clearly missing the word "IN" and the "LI" in Liberty. It is definetly a mint error not worn away , Is this something of value?

Wow - looks like you're still around answering as best you can -- so here's my husband's find:

2005-P, California State Quarter. Almost twice as thick and no ridges on the out edge. And there's a raised edge around it on both front & back (on a normal quarter, the edge is there, just not protruding up so much and so sharply).

Either it was spooned in order to make a ring. People smash the edge of a quarter until it is very thick then drill a hole in it to make a ring.

Or it is a Die Cap error.
Do an image search on Die Cap error to compare.

I have a dime from 1975 it is missing the letter for location of minting, and the W of in god We trust partially covered by the rim. Also the head-side of this coin seems to be too deep and the date seems streched vertically. Is this a misprint and is it worth anything? All the things that seem unusual on this coin are on the head side, it is the usual one with the torch and two plants. Thanks!

1975 P dimes did not have mint marks so that is normal.

The deep set and missing W indicate a Struck Through Grease error, which is common and has no extra value.

I recently got a 2006 south dakota quarter with smooth edges and lifted rim, what is the value of a coin with this condition?

Man said...

2006 south dakota quarter with smooth edges and lifted rim

Possible finned rim error, about $20.00 to start depending on grade.

That said it could be a spooned coin that has no extra value.

I have a 1917s lincoln wheat, The L and the I are missing from LIBERTY, and the reverse same area material is folded over to the wheat stalk. But the excess material is struck not after production damage. Whats the worth of that?

Most likely a plated fake, weigh it with a 0.01 gram scale to find out for sure.

I have a 1988 quarter that is smaller than a quarter and justhair larger than a nickel. The entire edge is smooth and has a very definite " lip" it's very strange. Is it worth anything or just crap? I'm not even sure if this is the proper way/place to ask? I can take some pictures if needed.

Man said...

Spooned coin, damage made by hammer the edge of a coin to make it into jewelry.

1958 wheat penny. Great condition, but the 8 on the 1958 is barely visible.

Struck through Grease error, no extra value.

About $0.05.

My name is JoyL, I have found a 1973 penny that has two faces or maybe it is two heads on it that are facing each other. An Licon is looking to the right and the second face/head is way smaller and it looks like its J.F.K. Its right above the year.

Hi i recently came across a 1975 silverish looking lincoln penny. Odd looking penny seems to attract to other metals as if it was magnetic just isn't as strong as magnet. Done some research on aluminum pennies what are the odds if i happen to have one in my possession.Would be happy to hear your thoughts thank you

0% it is aluminum because it aluminum is not magnetic.
It is probably plated, weigh it to find out.

Off-Center error, unless the entire word is missing it has no extra value.

I have a Roosevelt dime. The the last two digits of the year 19xx are not visible.Roosevelts hair is not defined it and looks like etched lines. The top part of the ear is blended in to the etched area. Part of the rim of the coin has the same type etched lines. Otherwise the face profile, Liberty,In God We Trust and back of coin are fine. Curious if it has any value.

Sounds like damage or struck through grease error either has no extra value.

It could be another type of error but good pictures are needed to verify.

Damage, someone started to spoon or hammer the edges of the coin to make a ring.

Not sure what you mean but any coin with a blank spot could be a misaligned coin, about $15.00 to start depending on how severe.

Altered coin, this can be done in a variety of ways like using high voltage to make souvenirs.

No extra value but they sell for $5.00 on average.
