Error Quarter

Do you have an error coin and want to know its value? Leave a comment/question and I will do my best to find out the price and history for you.

Statehood quarters are the most collectible current coins in the market. Error coins are the newest of the collectible trends. Combine them both and you got something special but is it valuable.

I found this in my change about a 2 years or more back. It is a South Carolina quarter 2000P with an off-center error.

 Obverse

Reverse

When I first found it the only reference I had was the back of the U.S. Coins Red Book which at the time listed it at $150, today's Red Book has it for $175 but this is for 20% off center. I bought a guide book on errors and it showed how to measure your off-centerness. I estimated this coin at no more then 15% without being 100% sure.

Recently I stumbled upon a site http://error-coins.com/ that I could ask better experts than me to evaluate this and a copper dime. The site admin said this...
The South Carolina quarter looks to be about 10% off-center. It's worth around $50.
I trust this judgment.

The copper dime is still an unknown error so I'll blog about it later when I can weigh it.

Back to error quarters there are 8 common types of error and depending on the state and rarity affects the value. If I chose to sell this the same time I found it I could have gotten more due to low reporting but as more are found the value went down. This always something to think about with error coins.

Here's the stats for a normal South Carolina P quarter....
Year: 2000P
Metal: 91.67% Copper 8.33% Nickel
Mintage: 742,576,000
Value: AU-50 $0.35 (AU=about uncirculated)

429 dollars worth, for Comments/Questions click here.:

A lot depends on eye appeal but this is a Capped Die error generally starting at $150.00 if the state can be identified possibly more.

It is a little light but no off-metal error comes to mind.

I think the coin was altered but at this point the only way to make sure is have someone look at it in hand. Maybe a coin club can help, sorry I couldn't be more specific.

I have a 2005-P Kansas quarter. Both sides of the coin do not seem to show a very strong strike like a regular coin. The reverse to me is the worst the lettering at the edges is very faded and the overall design is not very sharp at all, but the edges of the coin are raised like a normal coin. Could this be a weak strike or something else?

Yes, it could be a weak or Die adjustment strike they start at $25.00 depending on eye appeal.

These can only be verified by a grading company.

Or is it like a bubble was trapped under the design with no extra metal on top?

I have a 1967 washington quarter with uniform lack of reeds(?)/ridges on it's edge. There are, more specifically, ridges/reeds on the edge but are so faint as to be almost non-existent and even those are only on a portion (about an eighth) of the way around. The rest is almost smooth but one can see where ridges would have been using magnification. It is mostly smooth to a fingernail all the way around.

I do not suspect normal wear could have caused this as the rest of the coin's relief stands out clearly as does the rim (both sides). The overall effect of the uniform nature of the missing ridges also indicates that normal circulation wear could not have caused this and there do not exist tool marks that would indicate that someone altered the coin.

is this the kind of error that merits further consideration?

Man said...

Despite not looking worn it is most likely wear. I have seen this many times and the reeds can go faster than most people think.

If not it is either a weak strike made by an old collar or Struck Through Grease.

Either way no extra value and not significant in any way.

No plated quarters are considered damaged and with so little value in gold it has no metal value.

Could be an Off-metal error worth hundreds, it must be weighed to know exactly.

Could be silver-plated done outside the mint, no extra value. Since you described the shininess I assume it is this one, very common to find in change.

Regarding the weight factor of this 2000-P Virginia State oddball shiny/reed edged quarter, I don't have a exact gram scale. However I did weigh it on a small balance scale against 3 other quarters and it was heaver against each one weighed. I got it back in 2000 and kept it in my state quarter folder. If this was silver, it should have an "S" instead of a "P".
How could this have possibly gotten a "P"?

This is regarding my Oct 21, 2011 post regarding my 2000-P Virginia State quarter, with no copper cladding in the middle, that looks like silver, and there is no "S" mint mark. I finally got a gram scale that reads .00g. The official weight of this coin is 5.81g, rather than the normal 5.67g. To my knowledge, this is closer in weight to the 1976 bicentennial silver issue weight.
Could this have been struck on a bicentennial silver planchet? What would be it's value, and should I bother sending it in to PGCS? Thanks.

Odd were it made from a modern silver blank it would be 6.25g.
It is not possible for a 1976 silver blank, too much time passed.

I have to assume it was plated, the weight is slightly above tolerance. At this point only a professional grading can tell. My problem is that you would have to pay $60+ to possibly have it come back as unknown, fake, or damaged.

If there is a local coin club in your area ask several members to look at it in hand.

Sounds like a Pine Tree Sixpence 1652 which is an American coin (Colonial Issue).
In About-Good which is a very low grade it's about $300.00.

Yours seems to have environmental damage and if cannot be properly graded then it will have no value.

So even if damaged it should be verified as a Pine Tree Sixpence 1652.
Assuming Poor grade it will be about $50. Poor is PO-1 where 70=perfect.

It should be 5.67 grams so why it is so heavy is not known.

The quarter cannot be made without having an edge. The edge may have been worn down over time it is common.

That said a thick planchet error can cause odd edges about $20.00 in mint state.
It can only be verified by experts, like PCGS.

The only other reason is someone tried to make it into a pendant and changed the edge.

Anonymous said...

It does have a rim but it is elevated so that my finger nail can clearly catch it. The edge has a thickness of 2.5mm. I'm not sure if there was too much metal so that when it was stamped some "overflowed" out of the stamp. But how would that explain the absence of ridges on the sides?

Man said...

A normal quarter should be 1.75mm.

So thick planchet sounds more likely. Because they are thicker than normal the collar that makes the edge does not properly close around the coin.

Again this is also signs of spooning for jewelery.

Someone needs to see it in hand.

I dont think this has been heated because it is too perfect and new looking.
--Heating a coin does not change the design and is often used to improve a coin. It makes a coin shinier and if left too long gives it a copper edge, too much a rainbow color, and even longer a black tint.

Possible a "Finned Rim" error but usually this is only on one side.

If you can place pictures online somewhere that would be great but if not please Google "Finned Rim" to see if your is similar.

They average $20 or more depending on height.

Jenny said...

Sorry I think I may have commented somewhere completely random thinking it was right here. But...

I think it may be a "finned rim". the pictures online arent the best and seemed to only have it raised on a portion of the coin. On this quarter is is all around the front and the back at the same level. Does this still fit the "finned rim" catagory?

Also what do you suggest I do with this? I have no idea where or how to go about selling this.

thanks!

Jenny said...

Also to describe a bit more, the lettering of LIBERTY, 1971, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, and QUARTER DOLLAR are still perfect and follow up the rim a bit so I'm thinking it would be unlikely to be damaged right?

Of course my camera on my phone suddenly stopped working, if I can get it to work I will take a picture of both sides and send you the link.

Man said...

--No. Not really it need to be seen in hand or with good pictures to figure out exactly what you have.

That said...
Ungraded they tend to sell best on eBay for $20 or more.

Grading may cost more than the coin is worth. You always try several local dealers or check coin forum to see if anyone is buying.

But with most odd items, eBay is your best bet with good pictures and if your a good seller.

If not just keep it until you are sure you can sell for decent amount. Value only grows over time.

It happens when someone hammers the edge to make a ring.

I have a 2003 P state quarter from Missouri that shows no copper on the edges of the coin. I picked it out from a coin stack thinking it was a pre '65 silver quarter oh well, The coin seems to weigh the same as a regular quarter though I haven't confirmed this with a scale yet. The die strike on the coin including the reeding on the edges is sharp. I wonder what it could be worth, if anything?

Possibly Missing Clad error, it needs to be weighed.

Also check the surface it should have luster and be smooth. If bumpy or washed out and not sharp then it could be acid damage.

If real about $1,000 but again these are easily faked.

I have a 2007 Wyoming State quarter that is extremly shiny, very refelctive like a mirror. Its edge is normal other than the fact it shiny as well, no clad. The most unsual aspect is that there are two small holes in the rim, 180degrees apart and with a depth of about a 16th of an inch each. One hole is about even with the U on the face side and the other is about even with "GOD WE". It's almost like someone stood the coin on edge and drill into it. Any insights concerning this coin? Thanks.

If the coin has an S mintmark it is a silver coin, if P or D it is a plated clad.

The 2 small holes sound like it placed in a pendant for jewelry, it should not affect the value much if not perfect.

This is one of the 2007 Hockey Series coin, released for collectors with a colorized hockey team logo in that "blank" space.

The problem is the paint used on the coin starts to flake off and fall. This makes the coin worth less the $25.00 mint value.

With no sign of what team it used to be I would guess about $0.50. Only because so few were made.
