1944 Penny

Do you have a wheat cent and want to find out its value? Leave a comment and I will do my best to find out the price and history for you.

I have a 1944 wheat penny. Is it worth anything?
This is one of the most common dates for older wheat cents because all together about 2 billion (2,000,000,000) were minted. So far I've found 18 cents dated 1944 mostly in good to extremely fine condition. Very Fine is not worn on the back and slightly worn on the front. Extremely Fine barely any wear and sharp details. I've never found a 1944D or 1944S.

Here's the stat for 1944 cents...
Year: 1944
Mintage: 1,435,400,000
Metal: 95% copper 5% zinc
Value: VF-20 $0.10 or EF-40 $0.20

Year: 1944D
Mintage: 430,578,000
Metal: 95% copper 5% zinc
Value: VF-20 $0.10 or EF-40 $0.20

Year: 1944S
Mintage: 282,760,000
Metal: 95% copper 5% zinc
Value: VF-20 $0.15 or EF-40 $0.20

Thank you for your visit.
Updated for 2014 values.

1996 mild doublind in LIBERTY and IN GOD WE TRUST

About $10.00 in fine and $100.00 in mint state.

One is known check it out: 1996 DDO

Anonymous said...

The guide that I am using is not up to date. Do you have know of one that is?

Man said...

forgot...the 2008 is a D. Any price difference?

The D mostly has doubling on the back and are less but you said the doubling is on the front so the value stays the same since those are harder to find.

Man said...

The guide that I am using is not up to date. Do you have know of one that is?

The guide at CopperCoins.com is good but better is their forum.
People are finding new Doubled dies everyday and they post them up, using the old guide you can estimate value.

So even though no 2008 (P) are listed since a few have been found and none have doubling on the date it is $2.00 in fine.
If date has doubling it goes to $10.00 in fine.
If only the reverse is doubled then it is $0.50 in fine.

Value goes down if a lot have been found and reported in the forum.

Do you know of one that i can print?

No, you can try and copy and paste all the pages or download the website to use offline.

Becuase it changes so fast printing is not worth it.

Not listed anywhere, there should be doubling on the LIB in LIBERTY so this may be a lesser doubling.

About $0.50.

Man said...

Looking at it again, I also see some more mild doubling in LIBERTY

Whoops I read this late, so then about $2.25 in fine and $10.00 in mint state.

Man said...

What about in AU-58 to MS-60 condition?

Hard to say since noe have been graded, it should be at least $100 but it would depend on how many were found.

Man said...

1999 with doubling but it is only visible in the L of LIBERTY.The value will most likely be less, right?

Yes that means it is very light doubling, about $0.50 in fine up to $6.00 in mint.

Die Break adds no value.
About $1.00 in fine and $6.00 mint state.

Be careful often with die breaks false doubling is seen. As I may have said before these are problems seen with late stge dies.

Man said...

Is there a reason that all doubles I have seen pictures of or seen with my own eyes all seem to have the extra outline to the right and/or up?

Yes when the dies are made the tend to be made in clockwise matter and in a circle.

Meaning a the closer to the rim the stronger the double also the right will have stronger double.

That said doubling can occur in any direction and even multiple doubling is possible.

Anonymous said...

I have a 1981 penny that appears to have had the L in LIBERTY flattened to almost level. It is similar to one of the ones that I mentioned earlier, but this time it does not look worn. also, it is very bold.

Sounds like either a Struck Through Grease error or Minor Die Adjustment Strike either way no extra value.

Die break or bulge, no extra value.

The L is the closest straight edge to the rim which cause bulges, gets filled with grease, and other common problems. Sometime the L is completely missing or even at a lower level than the field but it never adds extra value.

I have a Chinese thing that was either a coin that was made into a necklace or origionaly a necklace. On one side there is a dragon with another what appears ot be a dragon head with feathers coming down from the neck and another feather going up above the dragons head. on the other side there are four letters, one north, one south, one east and one west. In the middle, there is a square hole, and on the north and south edges, there are two round holes that come out from the rim. It is very light. Do you have any idea what this is and if it is worth anything?

Sir,

Thanks for your information. Grandpa had a habit of saving small coins, thinking that someday... I have a jarful of circulated 1944's in various conditions, some D's, a bunch of S's a few plains. I am curious about one in particular. It is an "S" with a sort of cherry red color instead of usual tarnished copper. Why would that be? Just curious.

Thanks in advance for your help.

It sounds like it's just a high grade, probably a high mint state it would be about $0.85.

All others are about $0.10 if not red and shiny.

1944 D American Penny in good condition. The obverse side is upside down from the other side.

All U.S. coins have coin alignment which means when the head is normal and you turn the coin left or right then the back is upside down.
This is normal.

If you mean the when the head is normal and you turn the coin left or right and the back is also normal (right-side up) then this is an error.
About $40.00 if 180 degree rotation and high grade.

Look under the date, if you have a magnifying glass or micro scope carefully check the D or S to see if the letter splits at any point.

Of course if no mint mark then it is from Philly.

In circulated good condition about $0.03.

Unfortunately virtually no one will buy just 1 old wheat cent. Maybe if you're a good seller try eBay or a coin shop may give you 2 cents.

Yup, that is the problem many of these coins found in change are old but worth little over face value.

The general rule is that it should be over $100 in collectors value before you bother with selling. Under that just keep or spend normally.

I have a 1944 Steel Wheat Penny. I was told to make sure it wasn't a zinc coated copper fake, and to do this, see if it sticks to a magnet. So when I tried this, the magnet will pick it up, but it won't stay stuck (this is with a fridge magnet, so maybe I need a stronger magnet) Also in reading about these, they were never supposed to be minted, as the Govt. stopped minting Steel Pennies in 1943, so the error is thought that the steel was mixed with other metals (See Cointracker.com) So I am wondering if my penny is a mixture of metals and came out looking like Steel or if it is a forgery, or what? Does anyone know? Thanks.

Man said...

The magnet test is useless if it was plated with steel or nickel.

Weight is better to find out if it's an error. Use a 0.01 gram scale.

It could be another type of off-metal error but yes many fakes exist. Once weight is known then from there you can get a clearer picture.

I have a 1944-D ,S , and P steel pennies that are in very good condition, they are part of a set of war coins that have been passed down in my family. How much are the 1944 steel pennies valued at?

No such thing.
The 1943 pennies were steel.

These are either fake or if errors worth thousands.

1944 Brass Penny, I am having a very difficult time finding the value of this. I know that it was made from the shell casings of WWII. This Penny is definitely not copper or steel. Does anyone have any information on this particular coin?

Shell casing cents are not off metal errors. This was done on purpose so it cannot be an error.

They used about 25 million pounds of that metal for the cents so they are not rare.

Generally in circulated shape about $0.20.

2002 D penny with two tones each side.

Either plated or one side was covered in a weak acid.

Either way it has no extra value and is not a true error.

I have a 1952 D, wheat penny thats very dark in color which looks like it could be double died. However, what has got be boggled is that there appears to be the letter "A" before In God We Trust. Is that an error and do you believe it's worth anything?
