1916 & 1958 Wheat Penny

Do you have a wheat cent and want to find out its value? Leave a comment and I will do my best to find out the price and history for you.

hi.i am curious to find out how much my wheat pennies might be worth. i have a 1916 wheat(no lettering) and also a 1958 wheat. thanks
Here's the stats for a 1916 cent...
Year: 1916
Mintage: 131,833,677
Metal: 95% copper 5% tin and zinc
Value: G-4 $0.30 (G=good with the lines in the wheat missing)
------- EF-40 $8.00 (EF=extremely fine with all details sharp all wheat lines visible)

Here's the stats for a 1958 cent...
Year: 1958
Mintage: 252,525,000
Metal: 95% copper 5% zinc
Value: VF-20 $0.10 (VF=very fine no worn spot on back, slight wear on cheeks in front)

Basically for all wheat cents if it's this bright and the stalks of the wheat are sharp with full lines those are higher grades and of course worth much more. Even the littlest scratch or cleaning the coin will devalue it to only a few cents.

Sorry it took a while for a response I was out.
Thanks for your visit.

1958 D wheat penny with a period between W and E on IN GOD W.E TRUST. I can't find anything about it anywhere. Is that a common error I'm missing?

It is a common error known as Die Breaks or it is simply environmental damage.

Either way it has no extra value.

my grandmother got a wheat penny on her graduation (like 50yrs ago) that had the wheat stamped on both sides. I've checked it out and there are no seams or scratches around the rim, so i dont believe it is a fake. would like to know its value.

Most likely a fake, I've seen many and all were fake.

If real it would ten thousand or more.

It must be verified by an expert.

I have about 70 lbs. of copper pennies that are dated 1981 and before. I heard I can cash them in for $.03 each do you know if this is true? and if so where would I go. I live in Maryland and searched the internet but could not find much information about this. Thanks

This is not true.
There is actually a law that bans American from selling U.S. cents and nickels for their melt value.

Now on eBay anything is okay but these coins are still common.

Do you know anything about rolls of wheat pennies? I have a roll of 30 that range in years from 1909-1958. I'm not sure what year's are actually in the roll (I don't want to open it). It has a registration number on the outside of the roll is recorded and filed with: Historical U.S. Coinage.

This answer is from a prior question but it relates to you...
It's from International Home Shopping or IHS is kind of a scam company, over priced items of lesser quality.
The 30 coin roll is not valuable as an unopened roll.

You would have to open the pack to see if the coins have survived in uncirculated.
Currently most of the uncirculated wheaties are about $0.20 each more if older than 1944.

I would open them since only gov't issued rolls have value.

Greetings, I recently acquired a 1958 penny as 1 of several bonus coins when I bought a lot of coins on ebay, it is also silver colored and the person labeled it as a lamination error? i read wher you said to weigh them and haven't yet but what is a lamination error, could that cause the color diff.? I also have a 1880 S Morgan the case says it is GEM proof like and i read Gem mean MS64 or higher, how do I tell the diff from MS64 or 65 or higher. it isn't deep mirror but anything you know would help, thanks

Boogie Nightz said...

never mind about the penny i took it out of the case and the rim is copper, i guess it was the victim of a high school science experiment. Oh well at least I can say I wasn't stupid enough to buy it since it was a free bonus coin.

Man said...

what is a lamination error, could that cause the color diff.?
Lamination error is when the metal peels off from the coin and would not cause a change in color.
As you said it need to be weighed.

1880 S Morgan the case says it is GEM proof like and i read Gem mean MS64 or higher, how do I tell the diff from MS64 or 65 or higher

MS-64: A few scattered contact marks. Good eye appeal and attractive luster.
MS-65: Only light, scattered contact marks that are not distracting. Strong luster, good eye appeal

Man said...

it was the victim of a high school science experiment.

Careful a common experiment in schools pre-1970 was to turn copper pennies silver colored by dipping in mercury, which is toxic.

Man said...

1995 penny. Part of it has been crunched off.

I don't know what "crunched off" means, but it may be a clip error were a coin look like someone took a bite out of it.
Clip errors start at $15 and depending on size can go for hundreds.

I just dug a 1957 d wheat penny that looks silver and is slightly larger in diameter then a normal wheat penny , it also has a significantly large rim. I have not weighed it yet but what would the value be if it weighed more or less than 3.11 grams

Yes, I have a 1912 "V" nickel, I checked on one of the "free" sites, but I noticed you said they are not accurate. Is there any way you can tell me the approximate value? I'm not sure of it's exact condition, but it seems to be in good condition, obvious that it is circulated and the lines around the edges are a bit worn. Also, can you tell me what these #s around the package mean? Front, Upper Right-hand corner: V6-8 and Back, Upper Left-hand corner: 3919. Thanks so much.

Man said...

1912 "V" nickel,
About $2.50 in VG-8, I will add that those free sites have got better with values since I first made that statement.

Front, Upper Right-hand corner: V6-8
This looks like VG-8 which is very good 8.

Back, Upper Left-hand corner: 3919.
PCGS identification number for this type of nickel, old.

1914 about $0.75
1955 d about $0.10

Well condition is key the better the more it's worth.
* Wheat pennies in low grades go $0.02-$0.10 in general. Check out the years below for coins that are valued more.
* Rare dates: 1909-S, 1909-S V.D.B., 1914-D, 1922, 1931-S

terri said...

are the same denomination coins supposed to vary in weight?

Man said...

why is it that some dimes seem as though they are thicker than others even from the same year? other coins as well?

Because the machines that press them are not perfect. Varieties exist for many reasons when millions and billions of coins are minted.
These varieties are so common they add no extra value.

are the same denomination coins supposed to vary in weight?
Yes this is called tolerance.
All coins are allowed a little extra or less weight and some might even exceed the tolerance and not have any extra value since it is also very common.

It is difficult the "bad" hub doubling is flat and not as deep.

The real doubling is curved and on equal ground as the other design.

Try doing a Google image search of "Doubled Die".

Not a fake.
It is just a stamp that they made to add art to the Bicentennial celebration. It was done outside the mint and is considered damage so no extra value.
They are common.

Not sure to which comment you are referring but only a mint state 1944-D is worth $0.50.
And you would sell it because you rather have $0.50 then a cent.

If they weren't cleaned then they on average the have 100 times face value so $10 for dimes, $25 for quarters and $50 for halves.
Of course this depends on year and mintmark.

That said if they were cleaned then
dimes $1.60 each
quarters $4.00 each
halves $8.00 each

They may tarnish over time but this is fine, even if they go black just leave them collectors don't mind as long as no chemicals touch the surface.

Try getting either 2x2 holders for each coin or coin tubes, store them in a dark dry place.

inventory what you have like I said year and mintamrk, and try to keep up with values by purchasing a coin magazine or book every few years in case trends change.

I have a 1879 Indian head penny. I need the history. What does the horseshoe wreath and a symbol on top that looks like a shield and on the other side is a woman facing left which looks like either a bonnet or Indian head dress. Was the women white? I really need to know what the symbolism on the back side of this coin means. And if it is a bonnet or indian head dress and on the other side a horseshoe wreath with a symbol on top between the closing of each side of the wreath. What does the wreath stand for and why is it in a horseshoe shape and what is the symbol on top and what does it stand for????

Man said...

1879 Indian head penny.

What does the horseshoe wreath?
--Oak wreath probably an “agricultural wreath” to symbolize wealth or strength of the country, originally a laurel wreath which meant victory it was changed to oak after only 1 year of use by 1860.

symbol on top that looks like a shield?
--The Union Shield features thirteen vertical stripes joined by a single horizontal bar symbolizes the original thirteen states joined together in a single union.

on the other side is a woman facing left which looks like either a bonnet or Indian head dress.
It is "Liberty" wearing an Indian Headdress.
Liberty of course means of liberty and freedom the headdress is meant to honor and remember the Native Americans.

Was the women white?
By default she is white but she is a symbol from the Roman times and as a concept she has no color or belongs to any race.

on the other side a horseshoe wreath with a symbol on top between the closing of each side of the wreath.
A full circle ring meant a strength and victory of a whole nation, the reason for a broken or horseshoe ring is not fully known but it may just be a style choice or that the country was young and not fully formed.

he wreath often contains 13 elements like leaves or berries that represent the original 13 colonies.
They often add a ribbon at the bottom to bind the "13 colonies" and to complete a circle the shield is added to the top.

It means we are individual states bound together by one union.

The coin is pressed both sides at the same time from one solid piece, so this type of error is not possible.

If you see double values for the same year always assume the less.

You also put them on your blog, so next time just tell me or copy and paste the your blog address.

Checking your images it is clear that someone welded this coin on to something.
This may have been jewelery once and it has no extra value.

Were this a lamination or die break error the words would be broken. Plus the "extra stuff" is in a straight path which would not occur if this was an error.

I have a 1957-D wheat penny in pretty good shape. The back side of the coin was stamped upside down. Does that add any value to it and if so, how much?

Man said...

If you mean medal alignment and not coin alignment then it is a Rotated Reverse error.

Good article...LINK.

About $100.00 if truly a 180 rotated die error.

It is damaged so no extra value.
What it means is not known to me. Most likely someone's initial but can't say, sorry.

I have a 1953 Wheat Penny with no stamp for location. Oddly on the back on the left side wheat husk(?) there is a #1 at the top where the wheat becomes fine lines. Other than that there is nothing out of the ordinary. What does it mean and how much is it worth?

Yes, it is not rare to find coins 100+ years that are shiny like new.

Assuming Mint State-63, about $0.35.

No.
The U.S. Mint never made gold wheat cents.
This is either a plated normal cent made outside the mint, no extra value.

Or some type of art piece worth it's weight in metal.

Try weighing it.

Normal they would repunch the D by hand and sometimes it was off, one variety almost has the D on the 9 in the date.
Sorry, no extra value above $0.10 in good.

Scratches are usually not errors but damage.

Either bring it to someone to evaluate or post a picture online somewhere and drop a link here and I may be able to help.

1964d 1/2 dollar about $13.50
1964 1/2 dollar about $13.50

1960, 1961, 1962, 1963, & 1964
quarters about $7.50 each
dimes about $2.65 each
nickles about $0.25 each

Who pays that price? The dealer or the collector?

Man said...

Who pays that price? The dealer or the collector?

Usually collector, dealers often take 10-25% off this value.

That said these are also metal values which has outpaced collectors value.

Virtually everyone will pay this or close since silver continues to rise.

terri said...

Ok values again please... 1940s dime (crappy condition), 1940d dime (much better condition) Thank you!

terri said...

Oops... Sorry Man... Mr. Man... I think those dimes are 1949 rather than 1940. My eyesight just isn't what it used to be. Thank you very much! TerriSue

Man said...

dimes are
1949s dime (crappy condition) about $2.60
1949d dime (much better condition) about $2.60

The thing with dimes between 1934-1964 unless in higher grades like almost-uncirculated they just have current silver value.

hope this is proper place to pose question. have 1909S penny with misssing “L” from Liberty. it is identified in Spadones 1957 book “oddities of american coins” as a known error for that year. he listed it then in good shape as being worth $220. assuming this graded at least au-50 with no major defects except the missing L—which has not been rubed off, etc., it simply was not pressed onto the planchet when minted—any guess what it is worth, except what someone will pay? thanks. jonny

Spadone's book is well known among collectors for exaggerated prices and overstating minor errors like minor Struck Through Grease error or Die Breaks as you are describing.

That said a 1909-S cent is about $275.00 in AU-50, that minor error may lower the value to some. But this cent is so wanted it may not change value at all.

As for that book I would say keep it as a collectible but it is not a valid reference source.

terri said...

For a penny? $270.00? Is that about the most valuable penny out there?

Man said...

For a penny? $270.00? Is that about the most valuable penny out there?

No, an error 1943 cent made of copper goes for $100,000 in high grade.

For non-error a 1922 cent with no D mint mark goes for $30,000 in high grade.

Man said...

WOW! So is it posssible for any of us to find one of those in our poc ketchange or are they all more or less acco untedfor?

This is why I keep searching, the most recent 1943 copper cent was found in some guys change.

Dozens of $10,000 plus coins have been found in recent years.

Not to mention thousands of $100+ coin because of errors or age.

A 1982 dime with no mint mark is about $200.00 in high grade and has been found in change because who would look for such a tiny flaw on a normal coin.

The most valuable coin I personaaly found was a South Carolina quarter that was 10-15% off-center and is about $50.00.

That said currency also can be found in change worth thousands.

You originally found some silver dimes, while not rare they will always have silver value and can be sold to jewelers, dealers, or pawn shop for 10% less than current silver value. Old silver and gold will always sell fast.

But rare is rare, sounds silly but to find a valuable coin or currency $100 or more is still one in million.

My best advice is to keep an eye out for something that look odd or old. Worse comes to worse it is not special and you just use it the next day.

Man said...

Back in 2008 I found a crisp 1 Dollar/United States, 2003A star note meaning it has a star as the last digit.

Value $50.00, since then I found 3 more star notes but none have been crisp or rare or valuable. I kept them but if I decide to use them no big loss.

So how can I tell a 1943 copper cent from a 1943 regular cent?

Man said...

So how can I tell a 1943 copper cent from a 1943 regular cent?

Well a regular 1943 cent is Zinc-Plated Steel and weighs 2.70 grams.

The copper 1943 cent is Copper and weighs 3.11 grams.

Although weight and color are the best ways the fakes are so good sometimes only experts can tell.

These were made outside the mint and are not official.

To celebrate the bicentennial in 1976 many companies would take regular pennies and etch symbols like bells, eagles and stars. They sold at $0.25 but have no real value.
For collectors they are considered damage.
