2001 Malaysia 10 Sen

Second Malaysian coin in a week and the reason I gave last time may still be valid. Regions in the news tend to bring out the traveling reporters. It is another 10 sen coin that a friend gave to me after they got it as a dime in change.

Just like that last 10 sen coin this one has some minor doubling around the date. I am pretty sure it is machine doubling. Not to bad mouth the minting facilities of Malaysia but these coins are not the highest quality.

Nevertheless I appreciate the effort. The coin features a flower on the date side. The other side has a Congkak game in process. This is an ancient board game where players take turn trying to empty each hole.

Here's the stats...
Type/Country: 10 Sen / Malaysia
Year: 2001
Mintage: 313,422,000
Metal: Copper-Nickel
Value: $0.15 in Extra-Fine

1942 Nickel

Not the silver version but the plain old copper-nickel one. Because of WWII they stopped making this copper-nickel version of the coin. Nickel was needed to make weapons and ammunition so they temporarily switched to partial silver nickel in 1942.

This was only the fourth year of Jefferson nickel and it was the first coin to need a sudden metal change. Of course they needed to make a minor design change which was to add the mint marks to the top of Monticello. Since this one has no mint mark anywhere it is easily recognized as a copper-nickel version.

Here's the stats...
Type/Country: 5 Cents / United States
Year: 1942
Mintage: 24,720,000
Metal: 75% Copper 25% Nickel
Value: $0.15 in F-12

1947 Nickel

One of many older nickels I have found. Since I am actually looking for them again it seems easier to find them. I am still not keeping any nickels from the late fifties or early sixties and I keep finding plenty of those.

Yes those streaks means it was likely cleaned. Still it has metal value and it is over 65 years old and that should mean something.

Here's the stats for this coin...
Type/Country: 5 Cents / United States
Year: 1947
Metal: 75% Copper, 25% Nickel
Mintage: 95,000,000
Value: $0.10 in F-12

2006 Guatemala 10 Centavos

First Guatemalan coin in years. Guatemala is one of those countries that has so many problems that coins and currency do not travel far. Severe droughts and rampant drug cartels are wrecking the economy and displacing locals. Money at this point is a second thought.

REPUBLICA DE GUATEMALA 2006 LIBERTAD 15 DE SEPTIEMBRE DE 1827 (Republic of Guatemala Liberty 15 of September of 1827)
10 CENTAVOS MONOLITO DE QUIRIGUA (10 Cents Monolith of Quiriguá)

The monolith of Quiriguá is the largest old world stela in the new world. Made as a historical document for the natives in this area of Guatemala made dozens of them. The site is now a tourist attraction and more antiquities are still being uncovered that tell the story of the ancient builders.

Here's the stats...

Year: 2006
Mintage: Unknown
Metal: Copper-Nickel

Clear Plastic Disc

Instead of a dime I got this clear plastic disc. It is dime size and was very dirty at the time I got it. I thought it has some writing on it saw I cleaned it before taking a picture. Once I cleaned it I laughed because it was just a clear disc.

This one was clinging to another dime so it looked like two dimes but I got robbed of ten cents. I doubt there is even one cent worth of plastic here. Well it happens not everything you get in your change is going to be cool. Actually most things are common so this odd thing is kind of interesting.

Here are the stats for this token and the coin itself...
Type/Country: Clear Plastic Disc / Unknown
Year: Unknown
Mintage: Unknown
Material: Plastic
Weight: 0.35 grams
Diameter: 19 millimeters
Thickness: 1/32 inch
Value: $0.00
