Back in January I got this Shield from an eBay lot. This wasn't the coin I was after but it came with the lot.
It's a No Ray Shield Nickel. There are 2 types of Shield nickels, one has rays surrounding the 5 and the other doesn't. The one with rays were minted in 1866-1867, the no-rays were minted from 1867-1883.
All Shield nickel have an initial value of $18.00 in G-4(all letters in motto readable).
The 1880 nickel has a G-4 value of $450.00.
Notice that this nickel is in very bad shape. It is still identifiable but no date can be read and the motto is almost gone. I'll estimate it would barely grade PO-1(poor). If it had a date it would be a AG-3(almost good).
Here's the stats for this coin...
Type: 5 cents
Year: 18??-Unknown
Mintages: Unknown
Metal: 75% Copper 25% Nickel
Value: $1.50-$3.00 in PO-1 or PO-2
It only has value because it is identified as a shield nickel if it was this bad and a Morgan dollar it would on be worth it's metal value.

Man, You might be getting bleed over traffic from the Snopes.com article. I guess we should enjoy it while it lasts...
Not exactly sure what you talking about but that site is kind of cool I like the way he set it up. http://www.snopes.com/
I have five Liberty Silver Dollars ranging in years from 1921to 1926.
I think the 1921 silver dollar is a Morgan because the head is different from the others. Can you tell me how much they are worth? These coins were my Grandparents
1921 Morgan dollar is $16.00 in very-fine.
Peace dollar from 1922-1926 average $13.00 each except in very-fine for the 1924S & 1925S they average $26.00 in very-fine.
To find the mintmark look under the ONE on the reverse it is either blank, D or S.
Hello,
I have an 1868 shield nickel that has a bit of gunk on it. I'm not sure if it's actually the 'green gunk of death', because it looks much too dark, and a bit of it came off in a warm-water wash.
I have a scan here;

I would like to know what that stuff might be and if it's possible to remove it without damaging the coin, and if it's worth anything(It doesn't look like it makes G-4)?
Thanks for your time :)

That look like classic PVC damage and that is verdigris.
Your are correct soap and water dipping would help, distilled water(DW) is best.
Maybe a dip in pure acetone and rinse with DW.
Agree about the less than G-4 the motto is virtually flat. I would say about $3.00 if the green could be dipped away it maybe $5.00.
Aah, now I see. I had never seen PVC damage before!
I bought the coin from a little 'foreign coin bin' at a local shop for a quarter, as I didn't have a shield nickel before. I'll have to go get some acetone and see how that goes.
Thanks again :)

If you mean the shield nickel then it is real but probably not worth much so no big loss.
I have a shield nickel and would like to find out the value.

What year?
HI, I have a shield nickel, 1867, no rays. This nickel has the number 18 stamped upside down in a little box on either side of the number five. It is by the flat line coming down on the five on the left side and by the top of the curve in the five on the right side. Any idea what this might be and why it is on my coin? Thank you.

Not sure what the Overstamp was for but it is considered damaged, about $1-$2 at most.

I wanted to know the value of a coin that someone found on the treasurenet website. It is an 1878 shield nickel. Here is the post (shield on 4rd pic down)

1878 shield nickel about $400.00 in that shape.
Since only proofs were made they are hardly seen in auction in such low grades.
It should be verified in hand fakes do exist.
