Old Dollar Find

Do you have old currency and want to know its value? Leave a comment/question and I will do my best to find out the price and history for you.

After Christmas I went to do some post-holiday shopping and received this bill in my change.

I found a 1935H dollar also known as a silver certificate. Notice the seal is blue instead of green.

The H in 1935H means the design was modified from the original 1935 bill, probably to add a new signature of a treasurer.

Here's a sample of what I found in my change over the last ten years.
$1.00 bills
1935E value in very good(VG) = $1.50
1935H value in VG = $2.00
1957-star note value in VG = $2.00
1957A value in VG = $1.25
1969B value in VG = $1.25

$2.00
1928G value in VG = $7.50
1953A value in VG = $4.00

$20.00
1950C value in VG = $25.00

Of course some are higher grades but most are very good.

Prices updated to 2008.

Do you have old bills and want to know its value? Leave a comment/question and I will do my best to find out the price and history for you.

1042 dollars worth, for Comments/Questions click here.:

Not a coin.
Some type of medal with no value above whatever metal it is made of.

Coins have two sides and must have a year.

Ok all the confusion is now clear.

This is about $18.00 in good which means it's worn but the words LIBERTY are readable.

Anonymous said...

ok thanks, at least thats all over :-] by the way did you find that 18.00 dollar thing too?

Is it Gold or Copper?

Gold about $1,700.00 if LIBERTY on headband.

If copper then it is a fake.

Man said...

if you know how can you please tell me how to get a coin out of a coin clip without damaging the coin

Without damage it is better to ask a jeweler to try.

Man said...

when you say try do you think that a jeweler could actually get it out without breaking it

Depends on how the coin is attached, if it was soldered in then damage will occur.

If it was glued or latched then a jeweler should no how to do it safely.

Anonymous said...

its gold but it says kelloggs and co on the head band it is real here is the link to the website where i found it

Man said...

its gold but it says kelloggs and co on the head band it is real here is the link to the website where i found it

Although before you said no Kellogg and said it was a penny.

I think you maybe confused.

These are scarce and it would be about $2,600.00.

Again many fakes exist.
Some are sold on eBay at $20 but these are all replica of the 1854 Gold Kelloggs coin.

Anonymous said...

i mean kellogg and co not kelloggs and co

how can you tell if its a fake also the reason why i said no kellogg and co is because i saw one like that so i wanted to know how much that one was worth could you please tell me how to tell if its a fake about the only thing i know is that my great great granpa used to own this

Man said...

could you please tell me how to tell if its a fake about the only thing i know is that my great great granpa used to own this

You can tell by weight, style, and feel.

But yours is in a coin clip meaning it can not be properly examined.

One thing is if it was real it would not be in a clip but that is not 100%.

The fact it has been in your family for years is a good sign.

Anonymous said...

why wouldnt it be in a coin clip

Anonymous said...

is there a way i could tell by just using the face of the coin

Man said...

why wouldnt it be in a coin clip
--Even back in the 1800s this was a rare and valuable coin putting it in a money clip is almost always damaging.
Plus the most common fakes are in money clips, check eBay.

is there a way i could tell by just using the face of the coin
--Yes but you would have to know what your looking for.
Signs of cast made like bubbles of metals.
Signs of luster or lack of luster.
The font compared to the real coin pictures.

Anonymous said...

ok thanks sadly i got the coin out and its fake =-{but the good news is its gold so how much would it be worth then

Man said...

ok thanks sadly i got the coin out and its fake =-{but the good news is its gold so how much would it be worth then

Depends on karats and weight.
Look for any symbol indicating 8kt, 12kt, or 24kt.
Then weigh it from that you can check online for current gold values.

If you cannot find any symbols then again a jeweler may be able to help but I think it may be gold-plated which means no value.

Man said...

Aside from change finds you can try...
1. Roll hunting- going to banks buy rolls then returning any common finds.

2. Coin trading- coin forums are great for this

3. Work/volunteer somewhere that coins are regularly used.

Man said...

how i could find star notes and maybe buffalo nickels and wheat pennies easily

Easiest is to buy from eBay, coin shops, or coin clubs.

Second is trading at forums or clubs.

Third is just using more money. Making friends with cashiers and asking them to put then aside for you.

There is no simple way if you don't have money to spend.

Another popular way is roll hunting, you go to the bank exchange cash for rolls of coins then search the coins. After you take out all the good coins you take the rolls back to another bank or store or coin machine.

Good luck.

Looking for error coins is tough since they are often odd shapes. So look in penny rolls the most but check all of them.

Sounds like a 1895 note but these are very rare worth $20,000 or more.

Because of that many fakes exist it should be verified in hand.

There are a few other $10 Hawaiian all have large values but still should be seen in hand by a dealer or better a coin/currency club.

Anonymous said...

wow really? Any Idea who can verify it for me? Where could I go? Thank you

Man said...

If you think it's real try a local coin club.
Go to several coin shops.

You can also pay PCGS to have it graded but that may cost $100+ and get returned as a fake.

These are rare and not often seen but since it has no date I think someone may have rubbed it out to try and pass it as something more valuable.

I know nothing about old dollar values. I have a First National Bank PRATT Kansas $5.00 bill with a blue seal in the lower right corner the number on the top right and bottom left is 4907 and the number below the 5 on the right side and by the Ben Harrison pic on the left is 6229, it is perpendicular to the rest of the writing. the date on is is April 14, 1922. The back has a pic of men in a boat and states National Currency. Is this a real bill and if so what is it worth. It looks to have been wrinkled in by-gone times and has been folded in forths for many years.

Sounds real these are officially 1902 series $5.00 National bank notes.
It's about $175.00 depending on signatures.

Dear Sir,

I have in my possesion four silver certificate $1 notes. I have these since I was a kid (over 20 years now!), all in used but very nice condition. They have the three characteristic vertical folds and are slightly dirty (as any banknote that's seen normal use), but the paper is still pretty much crisp. I've seen newer dollars made a few years ago in way much worser shape than these... I would say Very Fine condition (at least for some of them). They are (series, serial, printer, features):

1935D L37114539F I, blue seal, Clark-Snyder
1935E W40411418H E, blue seal, Priest-Humphrey
1935E X60712261G E, blue seal, Priest-Humphrey
1957 *03114460B D, blue seal, Priest-Anderson, motto

I also have the following stuff (four of each):

- 1914 German 5 Mark Darlehenskassenschein with 7 and 8 digit serials, in used but OK condition (I think VG is their correct state).

- 1941 Serbian 100 Dinar notes (overstamped Yugoslavian 1929 notes, with Alexander I as watermark) in near mint condition - never used, never folded, corners sharp as they came out of the printers, but they have some small stains on the edges and very slight/minor folds (due to storage and counting) - something that you would expect to find on banknotes that survived various (totalitarian!) regimes almost intact.

I would like to know what would be the average value of these and I would appreciate your opinion.

I live in Europe and am interested in selling these - any advice you can give me on the best way to do this?

Thanks for your time and looking forward to your answer!

Sounds like a Major Faulty Alignment error about $1,000.00 if the shift is about 20% which from what you describe is the case.

Again these error notes sell on eye appeal so plus or minus $500.00 from the estimated value is common.

For maximum value you may want to get it graded first.

PCGS.com for grading it may cost a bit much but worth it for higher grade notes.

Find a dealer link for a reputable dealer.

Check eBay and search "faulty alignment" you will see average values for graded and ungraded, as well as how degrees off center affect value.

Also if your good with auctions try eBay or Heritage.

Selling in person will give you the least amount since shops want to make a 50% profit.

These notes have value but if circulated they are difficult to sell for a profit.

I don't currently possess this, but here goes.

I had purchased a train ride into Boston for a job and received a $10 as change. Once there, I had to take the subway and had a rather low bank balance. After attempting to purchase a ride with my $10 at vending machines, unsuccessfully, I noticed it looked a little different. It was from 1974; I had to buy popcorn from a nearby vendor to get change.

Was that $10 bill worth anything (over $10)? I know the lifespan is only a few years.

Man said...

Was that $10 bill worth anything (over $10)? I know the lifespan is only a few years.

1974 $10 is just $10.00 in circulated unless a star note.

It is mostly a myth that a bill has a sort lifespan. I have found notes from the 1928 series in my change.
The issue is the dirt and grime over the years makes these older notes unreadable to machines and pen checks. Even though the note is real it would problem get flagged at a bank as unreadable and the govt will burn it.

Probably too much info, sorry.

numbers are on the front are f1806 and the numbers on the back are 1603
Note has some crispness to it..Note has no tears, pin holes or paper missing..Note has previous foldlines. I would call it good to very good in my opinion. there is an alignment error on this notes from and back but im sure that wont add much if any value.

also, the serial number on the left is down a little touching the signature , and the bottom rim of the blue seal on the right drops belong the written out "five" lettering, as well as the words "this certificate is legal tender" running through the to of the number "5" on the left. not sure if this will add or take away from the value

ok, on that 1934b 5 dollar silver cert, would it add to the value if the back is also miss aligned? it is to the point that you can see about 1/8th to 1/4 inch of the front below the bottom looking thru the back of the note and also you can see about 1/16 to 1/8 inch of the front image to the right side of the back image when looking thru the back of the paper. If nothing else its a really neat looking defectively printed bill that i plan to keep for my collection.

If you mean there is a piece of a second image coming in then it does have extra value.

If you mean the back and front are not lined up that is normal.
