Old Dollar Find

Do you have old currency and want to know its value? Leave a comment/question and I will do my best to find out the price and history for you.

After Christmas I went to do some post-holiday shopping and received this bill in my change.

I found a 1935H dollar also known as a silver certificate. Notice the seal is blue instead of green.

The H in 1935H means the design was modified from the original 1935 bill, probably to add a new signature of a treasurer.

Here's a sample of what I found in my change over the last ten years.
$1.00 bills
1935E value in very good(VG) = $1.50
1935H value in VG = $2.00
1957-star note value in VG = $2.00
1957A value in VG = $1.25
1969B value in VG = $1.25

$2.00
1928G value in VG = $7.50
1953A value in VG = $4.00

$20.00
1950C value in VG = $25.00

Of course some are higher grades but most are very good.

Prices updated to 2008.

Do you have old bills and want to know its value? Leave a comment/question and I will do my best to find out the price and history for you.

1042 dollars worth, for Comments/Questions click here.:

Treasurer of the US: Kathryn O'Hay(?)Granahan(?)
Non sequential serial #'s

$1.00...Series 1963B
Sec. of the Treasury: Joseph W. Barr

These are known as Barr notes because Barr had a short term in office.
On average they're about $2.50 each but in circulated they are less.

$500 bill, well used Series 1934A.
At least $750.00 depending on serial number.

This is some sort of fake since Lincoln did not appear on the $5 bill until 1929.

I wanted to tell you how much I've appreciated your website. Its given me alot of insight on old dollar bills! Especially helpful since I recently got a job at as a bank teller :)

I have several star notes in very fine condition, I was wondering if you could tell me the values...

Series 2006 IF05159162*
Series 2004 EE04344205*
EE05135170*
EJ01132873*
EJ01882963*
EL03946783*
Series 2004A GB03814630*
GB05703389*

Also I have a 1977 $50 Serial# L15714569A if you can tell me what its worth. I know its not as old as most of the bills people ask about but I'm unsure as to when older bills start to add to face value. Is there a specific year or decade I should be looking for?

Man said...

Assuming $20...very fine condition

Series 2006 IF05159162* about $22.00
Series 2004 EE04344205* about $22.00
EE05135170* about $22.00
EJ01132873* about $22.00
EJ01882963* about $22.00
EL03946783* about $22.00
Series 2004A GB03814630* about $22.00
GB05703389* about $22.00

1977 $50 Serial# L15714569A about $50.00

Your best bet for finding unique bills is to buy a currency book. There are just too many years and serial number to list.
Of course knowing about errors is also good.

is there a website that you use to find out the vaules of these dollar bills. working at the bank we see some old style money come in and I have only been keeping the stuff older than 1965 is there any reason to keep the stuff thats newer than that? The reason I want the website is I have bought 557 dollars worth of old dollar bills ranging from the 1 dollar bill through 100 dollar bill. is there any way of knowing how to determine how much they are worth while they are coming in? if I had a chart i could print off I would be able to glance at it before I put them away... Thanks!

Since 1957-B bills were actually printed in 1965 they are considered fairly modern.

Plus the run on this group was about 7 billion meaning they are very common.

I'm also assuming a low grade of very-fine but even higher grades do not command much more money.

It is still a very nice note and hopefully you will find more.

The motto was not added until 1957 so that is normal.
The silver was once payable on demand until it was stopped by 1965.
The bill is still legal tender and can be used anywhere as a dollar although if it ends up at the Federal Reserve their policy is to "retire" it with fire.
The Blue Seal meant it was redeemable for silver unlike other colored seals.
It's about $4.00

us dollar that were printed in 1935 and 1957

They average about $2.50 each.

What is important are the serial numbers and the condition. Some are rare but many are common and have little value.

Sounds like damage from a bank stamp, but if a true Ink Smear error then it is minor with no extra value.

That weird symbol was just a mark used to make sure no one add more numbers to the end of the original serial number. It is a common symbol used in 1800s notes and early 1900s notes.

About $50.00 in fine.
