Hello Do you know anything about errors in dollar
bills? I have a crisp one dollar bill 1981 that is stamped with an "E" on the
front and also on the back.

I responded with...

Man said...
I need a picture to be more exact but it is possible, it is called Overprints on Back, it would also include a weak serial number along with the E.

In crisp uncirculated it would be worth $250.00.
It was a logic response because I didn't know the E was reversed.

Next...

Anonymous said...
I have a picture but how can I show you a picture? The normal cut and paste didn't work. After looking at it closer I see that the E is not stamped on both sides. It has actually bled through to the back. The E is very dark on the back and it is reversed. There are also four 5's that have bled through...as they are reversed, also. The serial number is only visible on the front.
Oh I see things more clearly...

Sounds like you have an Offset Error for one dollar bills its about $75 to $100.

Here's a ten dollar example I used Imageshack to host the image and then the HTML tags a and href
Picture
Anonymous' error sounds like a moderate-lighter version that happened on this ten dollar bill.

An offset error in the 3rd printing of a bill can lead to the "letter seal" and the serial numbers to bleed through the back this is the most common of error notes but still valuable. In one case a 1981 5 dollar bill with a 1 dollar bleed through this of course is a rare and highly valuable.

As you see with the ten dollar error above the prices should be divided by about three for your 1 dollar, so Fine: $50.00 EF: $100.00 CU:$150.00 remember the market changes and see prices reflect the highest you may ever hope to get.

Sidenote: With places like Flickr, imageshack and photobucket or other blogs just drop a link to your photo by using this format

crisp $100.00 Bill where the top serial numbers bleed through to the back, and also the "The United States Of America" Bleeds through to the back also, is this bill worth anything? There are very distinct embossings on the back

Minor Off set transfer error generally no extra value to about $15 above face.

Good day,
I recently came across a 1993 D mint Lincoln cent that has what I can only describe as shadow or slide doubling. The entire date, mm, about 80% of all lettering on both sides of the coin, as well as the area from the tie up to his lower lip, as well as the top of his head. There might even be doubling on the right side of the building. I would call the coin ms60+. Spotted with naked eye and examined under 8 power lens. The coin appears to have been brushed prior to minting with diagonal marks covering both sides. Do you have any info on an error here? Thanks again.

This sounds like machine doubling or late stage die doubling, either way no extra value.
The slide doubling you describe is accurate since the coin gets struck but a slight slide or bounce causes a double image.

Hello, my grandfather worked in a bank and left my father some interesting currency. There were some silver notes from 1957 but I am more interested in a a couple of ten dollar bills that were misprinted on the face side but were fine on the back. I've made a high-res scan of the front and the back because I have two of them:

I appreciate any insight!

Hello!
I have a crisp 1977 fifty dollar bill. It has a bad cut job. It was cut too high so there is like no space at the top and there is more space on the bottom than there should be. It has not been damaged in any way. I would like to know the value.
Thanks for your help and I would like to know A.S.A.P.!

Very Minor Faulty Alignment error, about $55.00.

Man said...

Actually a Minor Faulty Alignment error usually lowers the value in high grades. I'm assuming that is has some eye appeal but most collectors want a perfect note that is perfectly centered.

If off center it should be cutting off part of the design or showing part of another bill.

I just wanted to comment on your Nov. 24th comment to the person who said they had a bunch of obscure numbers printed across their bill. In looking at the numbers it looks like the bill may have been ran through an older check machine, or register. It was not uncommon with some of the older registers that bills were used in the check verifying machines (just for fun). Just a thought that might help clear up the mystery.

Thanks, you are referring to a comment from Nov. 24 2008. I've seen these check machines still in use at check cashing places in NYC. What you say is possible and I thank you for the information.
It still is considered damage.

If 100% of the back is showing through then it is about $250.00.
If 15% or less then no value or little.
In between 15%-100% is about $50 extra.

Hello, I have an uncirculated $1.00 bill (I say uncirculated because I got it straight from a pack of $100) since 1995 and have kept it inside an envelope with no creases or folds. The error is that it is missing the green seal from the Dept. Of Treasury as well as serial numbers on the front. Everything else is very clear including on the front the number 2 on four corners, D3 on the top left of the federal reserve and D51 bottom right next to the word ONE. On the back aside from the different cotton hairs (also on the front) the number 181. I would like to ask if you could tell me how much is worth and if it is a good a idea to maybe put it in a case. Thank you so much.

Incredible if real the wrinkles make it tough to detect a forgery but just by the pic I would think it is a real error.

It is a Printed Fold error about $250.00.

It is very nice because the serial number gets cut off but the condition is not good.
If graded and sent to auction I would expect much more than the minimal value I gave it.

I'm sorry a cutting error and a misaligned error are two different things and I do not understand which one you are describing.

Do you mean that the front design is shifted down and part of the other design is coming in from the top?
Also what is the serial number?

one dollar bill from 1999 that has the bottom of one bill printed on it and the top of another but it is only half of the bill the serial number is K99482992A.

This came from a big sheet of 4, 8, or 16 notes that are uncut. Someone bought the sheet and cut it wrong on purpose to create a fake error.
Sorry no extra value.

Hello, I need some help if you can. I have a 2003 $1 bill, the right hand side district numbers are smudged. They appear to either have been smeared by rollers before the ink was dry, or the stamp/press wasn't totally out of the way when it was time for the sheet to move on. So could you shed some light as to what caused it and the approximate value is? I would be very grateful.

Minor Insufficient Inking error, no extra value.

But if you can see a piece of the missing digit it can be a Stuck Digit error about $25.00.

How do they get the ink off of the $1 bill? Sorry for the repost above. They did a great job on the front because it has all of the fine detail of a real $5 bill. The back is a little more blurred but still has the fine detail of a $5 with the very faint ghost of a $1.

Bleaching money is very easy, just some mild acid in a tray it takes just a few minutes.

If you still think it can be an error try posing good pictures online and linking it here or to email better experts.

U.S. money should never be blurry even if an error. Still the possibility always exist for a new type of error.

So, my dad and his friend asked me to try and get some guesses price-wise on a collection of six bills they have. Any information would be very appreciated and helpful.

1. A two dollar bill, Series 1963, and the number on it is A 01233517A. It has a read seal over the 'TWO'.

2. Another two dollar bill, same red seal. This one is series 1953 C, with the number A 76925558 A. This one has what I've been seeing you deem as a 'minor alignment error', where the bottom border is plentiful, while the top is nearly non existent.

3. A five dollar bill, series 1934 D, with the number U44665388 A. This one has a blue seal over the 'FIVE' and under Lincoln is printed 'IN SILVER PAYABLE TO THE BEARER ON DEMAND'.

4. Another five dollar bill, series 163, With the number A 54832151 A. This one has a red seal in the same place as all the previous seals.

5. A one dollar bill, series 1957 B, with the number V 10929982 A. This one shares the same blue seal as the Five Dollar bill (#3), although it's noticeably smaller.

6. Here's the one they are mostly worked up about: A one dollar 2006 Series bill, numbers E 75890412 E. However, rather than the stamps (The numbers and seals) being on the face side of the bill, they are printed visibly on the backside. It's in great condition, no folds, tears, or wrinkles. The face side, if I wasn't very clear, has everything but the stamps and seals.

All of the bills are in good condition, the best being the misprinted one dollar bill. Only the two fives have evident folds, although the first one dollar bill (#5) has noticeable wear.

Thank you so much for your time if you get around to answering this question. Sorry for the length, I would just rather be over-detailed than under. Thanks again.

E-Bay is great but you can try "Coin Community" or "Collectors Universe".

You may want to go to several coin shops or pawn shops in your area, but they may offer half the value.

About $75.00 if Copper, this is a 1694 Halfpenny with GVLIEMVS error.

If tin this can be any year 1689-1692 and would be about $50.00.

Never heard of this error, it sounds like damage or possible fake.

If left in the dryer or sea water this may happen but I fear it may be fake. Either way no such error is known so no extra value.

1981 $1 Missing Printing or Insufficient Ink error it's in very poor shape and may be a fake error. If real about $10.00 because of poor shape.

1889 Dollar about $32.00
1894-S Quarter about $120.00

Both coins seem to be in extra-fine grade but also may have been cleaned. If they were cleaned then the value drops to just metal value.

Ink Smear error, simple over inking of the seal.
No extra value, it is just too minor of an error.

Hello! Its me again with the copper dime. Yes, it is a US Dime. It is a 1999 D mint. If I could have your email address I could send you a some pics of it. I took some laying next to a new dime face up then took one laying next to the same new dime face down & i also took one of me holding both of them side by side between my fingers. I would love for you to look at these. Thank You in advance for you time. Sincerely, Susan

I believe that you have copper dime a picture is useless.
I need the weight on a 0.01 gram scale to find the exact error.

I took the copper DIME & had a man weigh it that buys gold. He said it weighs 2.2 grams. Hope this will help.

How many COPPER DIMES have you ever seen?

I am 48 & this is the FIRST for me.

--Normal dimes should weigh 2.27grams so this may be a Missing Clad error.

About $100 if one side is missing
About $225 if both sides are missing

--Yes.
Many are fakes done with acid.

I own one that was improperly annealed, meaning it was overheated and the copper came out.

I have seen a few real Missing Clad errors and they weigh 2.20grams or less.

So I would have that one graded or at least let several coin shops see it in hand. You need multiple opinions in hand.

I have no experience with note errors. I'm not even sure if this is one. I just thought it neat to find out.
I came across this bill that had what seemed to be very very thick ink. It is so thick the ink is actually shiny and you can feel it raised above the paper. There is some transfer from other bills on it. The ink will still stick to your finger. It is thick on both the front and the back of the bill. However it's thicker on the left side of both sides. It didn't seem to come out too well on the scans other than maybe being darker. Any info would be interesting.

Here are links to a couple scans
