1944 Penny

Do you have a wheat cent and want to find out its value? Leave a comment and I will do my best to find out the price and history for you.

I have a 1944 wheat penny. Is it worth anything?
This is one of the most common dates for older wheat cents because all together about 2 billion (2,000,000,000) were minted. So far I've found 18 cents dated 1944 mostly in good to extremely fine condition. Very Fine is not worn on the back and slightly worn on the front. Extremely Fine barely any wear and sharp details. I've never found a 1944D or 1944S.

Here's the stat for 1944 cents...
Year: 1944
Mintage: 1,435,400,000
Metal: 95% copper 5% zinc
Value: VF-20 $0.10 or EF-40 $0.20

Year: 1944D
Mintage: 430,578,000
Metal: 95% copper 5% zinc
Value: VF-20 $0.10 or EF-40 $0.20

Year: 1944S
Mintage: 282,760,000
Metal: 95% copper 5% zinc
Value: VF-20 $0.15 or EF-40 $0.20

Thank you for your visit.
Updated for 2014 values.

Even in very high grade MS-65 it's about $3.00.

1946 weat penny fair condition about $0.10
1957-d weat penny about $0.03
1958-d weat penny in good condition about $0.03

so a 1944 penny is only 10 cents?

Yes in very-fine, in lower grades it would be $0.03 and in high mint state $1-$3.

I have a 1944 wheat penny, no mint mark on it. Someone told me to try a magnet and see if it is attracted to it to see if it was a steel penny. The magnet is attracted to the sides and reverse side. Is this normal? I apologize, I am a novice at collecting right now.

This is not really normal but all metals have some magnetic properties.
The best way to find this error is to weigh the coin.

I just listed a 1948 double die reverse on ebay with no clue of its worth. I started the bidding at .99 cent . there is very clear doubling on "E PLURIBUS UNIM" and on the "E" in "ONE". WHAT IS THE POSSIBLE VALUE OF THIS COIN?

As far as I know this doesn't exist.
It is probably a Machine Doubling that has no extra value above $0.10.

I would have to see it to make sure.

Hi, I have a 1944 penny and it is about 1/4 to 1/3 of the normal thickness of a regular penny. The condition is not great, but everything is legible on the coin and it was not smashed or anything because you can feel the texture the same as other pennies. How do I find out what this is worth?

Man said...

The 1948 Doubling is not a true Doubled Die it is machine doubling (MD).

The doubling is flat and has no notching this is typical of MD, sorry.

Great images though.

This just seems like a worn coin it happens all the time with pure copper coins.

I have a 1944 copper penny that appears to be a misprint. The bottom of the '9', or tail, is missing, so the date reads 1044.
The coin is in reasonably good condition. It was included in package of vending machine 'Lucky Strike' cigarettes about fifty years ago, when American tobacco company wrapped two pennies in a pack as your change.
Just wondering if this may have a value to a collector.

Just a Struck Through Grease error, no extra value, if you had the unopened pack with the pennies in it would worth more than $0.03 of this coin.

Probably not original bank rolls.
1955 about $0.50 for each coin
1944 about $0.20 for each coin

If they are original gov't/bank rolls multiply by ten.

3 things you can do...
1. weigh it, if real it would weigh 3.11 grams
2. measure it, should be 19mm
3. take pictures and post it somewhere then drop a link here.

All that said I think fake since this is a somewhat rare coin that is often faked.

1960 silver penny ways 3.2 grams

A normal 1960 cent weighs 3.11 grams meaning at 3.15 grams it is normal and in your scale would read 3.2. It would be better to get a more accurate scale.

I think yours is a plated normal cent done outside the mint. No extra value.

I checked the foreign production figures and no other coin in 1960 was 3.20 grams. So an off-metal error is not likely.

This one is not listed anywhere, while a true Doubled Die is possible it would be worth a hundred or more.

I suspect this is hub doubling that is often seen in and has no extra value.

Either have some one verify in hand or take excellent pictures and place them online for others to evaluate.

I think that it is the second one on list, which is worth up to 200 dollars. However, I happened to look at the collumns on the back and there appears to be an octopus floating in between the two middle columns. is this damage?

Man said...

This 1DO-002 does not show the back so I not sure how it is supposed to look.

Unfortunately if it's an a octopus stamped/etched in it loses all value.

If you means something that is looks squiggly like an octopus it could be damage or a die clash, someone needs to see it to verify.

I have another 1972 penny that appears to be doubled in the date. I would look at the other links but this time it is a D mint mark. does that website have pictures and values for this one?

This is less than 15% off-center and has no extra value.

Yes 2 show more on the date but there are at least 4 known 1972 D.

Although this site is great there are always more doubled dies found everyday that site is just a guide.
Also lots of hub doubling which are common and worth nothing extra.

In a guide that I have for valuable coins, It says for a 1997 penny, "double die, look at the ear lobe like the 84". What does this mean?

It means that the Doubling is the same as the famous 1984 Doubled Ear cent.
Here is a link: Doubled Ear 1984

Common the S is punched separately and often is far or near the date.
No extra value.

I have a 1970 penny with no mint mark that appears to have mild doubleing in the L in LIBERTY. Do you have any links to pictures that are similar to this?

Anonymous said...

I have a 1982 coin that may be very mildly doubled, but that is not why I am posting this. On the revers, in between the collumns, there are lines that range anywhere from almost vertical, to about how the lines on the thing outside a barber shop are. I can even feel them so they are not scketched in by a pencil (although they are about the right color). any idea what this is?

Sounds like someone polished a die leaving scratch marks that transferred to the coin.
This is often found on late stage dies that also cause hub doubling.

Anonymous said...

But they are not scratches, they are raised.

Man said...

But they are not scratches, they are raised.

Yes scratches on the die turned into raised bumps on a coin.

Dies are things that are pressed into coins and have reverse images and cutouts to make coins.

1992 penny. The rim is doubled!I can see an off center shadow of a rim that strethces from below the TRUST and below the LIBERTY. have you ever heard of this and is it worth anything?

1971 penny that has a very very red color to it. Isn't normally this red color in the wheatbacks that have been very well preserved?

Anonymous said...

also,on the 1971 penny, the R in LIBERTY has what looks like a scratch that makes the R look like an X

Anonymous said...

I hate to keep piling these up, but I have a 1972d penny that has a reversed L for the I in LIBERTY. It does not look like a scratch or any other kind of damage. it is too exact.

Man said...

No. There have not been any reported.

Man said...

Not doubling.
This is a minor misaligned die error, no extra value.

Could have been heateed or cleaned? Sometimes odd colors are a result of an attempt to raise the grades.
This is considered damage. Must be seen in hand to verify.

Man said...

Again it could be damage or some minor die break error. No extra value either way.

No need for the pictures of the 1983. There is no doubt. the whole building is doubled! according to a guide, it is worth up to 250 dollars in AU condition. Do you agree with that, and what is the definition of AU?

Man said...

If 1983 and doubling on the words also then yes.

IF 1983-D and just the building I suspect it is not true doubling.

AU means about uncirculated.
AU-50 = About Uncirculated,Obverse has a very slight worn on cheek.Reverse has slight wear.

If you are the one asking all these question about doubling the most important is make sure it is true doubled dies and not machine doubling.

Anonymous said...

Yes, I have a little trouble telling the differnce, Is there any special way to tell?

I do not see any doubling on the words, so I guesss it is only worth face value. Oh well. Still looking for a big one.

Man said...

Yes, I have a little trouble telling the differnce, Is there any special way to tell?

True doubling is curved and on the same level as the original.

Machine doubling is flat and on a lower level than the original. Often these are on late stage dies that have die scratches, breaks, and other artifacts.

What about letters that are bold? some, like the 1982 penny, are often bold. yet when I looked at the links for the 1970 and 1972, I could not see anything more than a bold letter where it said there was doubling.

Bold letters are common on some years do to minor design changes.

The problem with true doubling is that it is subtle and very difficult to take a picture of.
Often it looks like a small crease at the end of the letter and that is enough to be called doubling.

I found a 1989 penny. If you drew a line from the top of the coin to the bottom of the coin, on both sides, one line would start and end in a slightly different place than the other. I forget what this is called, but is it worth anything?

Anonymous said...

I just realized that most of the other coinss are this way, but the reason I thought it might be valuable was because I picked up one that didn't have this on it.

Rotated reverse error generally are not valuable unless they are 45 degrees or more.

I have another 1982 penny. This time there appears to be two I in LIBERTY. THey both start at the bottom in exactly the same place, but it looks like one was bent to the left, and then both of them were very mildly doubled.

Actually, on a closer look, it looks like the I that is not bent is leaning to the right, making it look somewhat like a very skinny V

Damage or minor doubling or die break either way it sounds too minor to have any value.

Man said...

No.
Die break error very common it adds no extra value unless big enough to cover 10% of the design or more.

I have a 1994d penny that has another d scratched to the right of the regular d. It is pointing toward the 4 in the date. Also, there appears to be a hole on lincolns shoulder and some more on the reverse. The coin is already very beat up, and I assume that the d is damage, but I just want to make sure.

I have a 2003 penny that is possibly doubled. according to a guide, there have been a few reports of double die pennies from this date. However this was on the reverse in the steps. I do not see this. Could you describe with as much detail as possible what to look for with real doubling. If this is real, how much would it be worth?
Come on big money!

The steps would be wavy, instead of straight they would bend under each column.

I can't really get more detailed as they are too difficult to describe. Once you no what a machine double is it's easier to distinguish from true double.

Like I said it has to do with flat and lower level(false doubling) versus curved and even (true doubling).

I forgot to say, the doubling in mine is not on the reverse, it is in LIBERTY. If this is real, how much would it be worth? I have looked at it many times and I cannot say whether it is true doubling or not. I do not have anything but a weak magnifying glass, so it looks too small to tell.

About $1.00, invest in a microscope or loop if you want to continue collecting doubled die errors.

I have a 1986d penny that has the L in LIBERTY pretty much gone. You can barly make it out. the coin itself is in about EF-40 condition. It is just the L that is worn. any value?

Struck Through Grease error, no extra value.

Since the die used to press coins are the inverse design occasionally they get filled with gunk and pieces of the design are missing.

Bubbles are caused by the bad heating of the zinc and copper layers, extremely common, no extra value. In most cases it will lower the value.

Vertical lines are die scratches transferred to the coin. No extra value.

I have a 1973 nickel that has very funny looking letters. The TY in LIBERTY has what appears to be a line going accross the bottom of the letters. Below this line the letters are looking somewhat deformed, like they were melted. This is also visible in the 197 of the date. All of the letters and numbers are bold except for LIBERTY. Sounds like a Late Stage Die error, it seems that die used to started to break. These are common and have no extra value.

It could also be outside damage but that also has no extra value.
