1944 Penny

Do you have a wheat cent and want to find out its value? Leave a comment and I will do my best to find out the price and history for you.

I have a 1944 wheat penny. Is it worth anything?
This is one of the most common dates for older wheat cents because all together about 2 billion (2,000,000,000) were minted. So far I've found 18 cents dated 1944 mostly in good to extremely fine condition. Very Fine is not worn on the back and slightly worn on the front. Extremely Fine barely any wear and sharp details. I've never found a 1944D or 1944S.

Here's the stat for 1944 cents...
Year: 1944
Mintage: 1,435,400,000
Metal: 95% copper 5% zinc
Value: VF-20 $0.10 or EF-40 $0.20

Year: 1944D
Mintage: 430,578,000
Metal: 95% copper 5% zinc
Value: VF-20 $0.10 or EF-40 $0.20

Year: 1944S
Mintage: 282,760,000
Metal: 95% copper 5% zinc
Value: VF-20 $0.15 or EF-40 $0.20

Thank you for your visit.
Updated for 2014 values.

In fine.
1940D Penny about $0.10
1942 Penny about $0.10
1944D Penny about $0.05
1956D Penny about $0.02

1945 Nickel..on the back there is a "D" over the white house
Actually it's Monticello it's about $0.60.

How can you tell if your 1974 penny may be one of the missing alluminum pennies?
Weight, it should weigh about 0.937 grams but it is still illegal to own so no company would grade it, except maybe ICG but they're not the most trusted.
Looking under a microscope it should have typical minting patterns such as spread and sharp design features.

I have a silver 1995D penny, totally silver, is it worth anything? (Die cast like a nickel.) Thank you.

Man said...

silver 1995D penny, totally silver, is it worth anything? (Die cast like a nickel.)

First you have to find out the weight.

If it is plated it's not worth anything above face, if nickel it may be worth more, if silver it may be worth a lot.

So anyone having a 74 aluminum penny that weighs .93, should just keep quiet??

I would say yes, you can always do like Toven did and put it public get a lawyer and hope for the best.
Since 2005 the Toven Specimen has stayed in the Toven family and they were talks about the mint buying back the piece privately. Yet if the Secret Service really wanted they can come and take it.

how much wil a 1944D penny be in 2020?

Man said...

1944D penny be in 2020

In very-fine
1970 had a value of $0.01
1996 had a value of $0.10
2009 has a value of $0.10

Factor in the redesign for 2009 and the possibility that the may change both the metal content and the design permanently I can make a good guess.

2020 may have a value of $0.20

Man said...

a question for "man" i read your post and i see is pennys worth like 5 cents and ten cent,i gotta ask you what pennys are actually worth something?

It depends.
Ex.
A 1944-D cent in fine(F-12) is at most $0.05.
A 1944-D cent in MS-65 is at most $3.00.
A 1944-D over S error cent in MS-65 is at most $1,850.00.

Grade, error, variety, and age are the key.

A 1999 variety is about $500 and is rare
but the common type even in near-perfect shape are just $0.01.

1909S VDB, 1909S, 1914D, 1922 are some examples of cents worth hundreds no matter what grade.

1944 about $0.10
1946 about $0.10
1950 about $0.10
1957 about $0.10
1958 about $0.10

how much are they worth but the 1944
This is normal as some old bullet-shells were used to make coins and the mixture is more golden than brown.

I have a 1944 penny which is supposedly "extremely rare". My friend said he got it as change from a walgreens. He claims it's made from the wrong metal, and only 2 coins like this exist. by the way, it is made in philadelphia. he says it's worth up to $200,000. its NOT steel. any idea what it is?

Man said...

Not steel is normal. Only 1943 were steel. He may be confused.
If copper it is normal worth only a few cents.
If silver it is an error worth about $2,000.00.

All in all about 20 different off-metal 1944 Philly cents have been found only the steel ones sold for about $100,000 in high grade.

Caution many fakes exist and an expert needs to see it in hand.

Anonymous said...

well my friend said he had a professional see it and said the guy would pay 200,000 for it. he doesn't remember what metal it is.

Anonymous said...

The penny isn't copper because copper pennies are darker than this one

Man said...

said he had a professional see it and said the guy would pay 200,000

Great he should sell it immediately but I be cautious.

penny isn't copper because copper pennies are darker than this one

Understood but it can be one of many different types of metals.

I hope all goes well, I may be able to find out the metal and type of error if you know the weight in grams.

Example:
If 2.50 grams it's silver worth $2,000.00 or more.
If 2.70 grams it's steel worth $10,000.00 or more.
If 3.11 grams it's copper worth $0.10 or more.

There are a few others that are also rare.

1957 Jefferson nickle with the o in Monticello triple punched.

I understand now, this error sounds like a Machine Doubling worth nothing extra. It happens when the die bounces more than once after the coin is struck. It has no extra value. It is very common.
In machine doubling the second and third "o" are flat and lower than the original "o".

If it is true Doubling the "o" would be round/curvy and on an equal level as the original "o". This type is rare and may be worth more if verified.

Anonymous said...

thank you

Man said...

1956 -p jefferson nickel that has a quadrupled last o in monticello and the lower portions of EPU does any one know value and how rare it

This sounds like machine doubling it is common and worth nothing extra so just $0.05.

2000-p sacagawea with a die clash of some sort on the reverse
This although an error has no extra value but with the change in the $1 coins it may be worth holding onto for the future.

and it does appear to have no finish on either side
I'm not sure what you mean by this but golden dollars don't last well and some were made with different finishes that do not add any value.
Weigh it to make sure it's not a missing clad layer, if it weighs 8.1 grams it's normal.

I recently found a 1944-D steel penny. The penny is mildly worn, and retains most of its detail. The penny was found in a sealed container, along with a sheet of unused WW2 gas ration coupons. It has very little oxidation. Held at arm's length, it appears almost like a newly minted steel penny. How does one go about getting the penny graded, certified and valuated?

Anonymous said...

After inspecting my 1944-D "steel penny" under a magnifying glass, and comparing its appearance and weight with a 1943 steel penny, it didn't appear to be steel -- and a magnet test verified it was NOT steel. A bit of scratching on the rim, with a pen knife, soon revealed a brass/copper color. Oh well, at least the gas ration coupons appear to be the real thing.

Man said...

1944-D steel penny...and a magnet test verified it was NOT steel.

I was going to suggest weighing it because it may have an error in silver. For future odd finds please don't scratch instead weigh it.
Copper is 3.11 grams
Steel is 2.70 grams
Modern copper-zinc are 2.50 grams

gas ration coupons
I don't much about these but they are very collectible. Start with an eBay search or try to find a forum that has collectors of these. Avoid online stores because they're all about the profit with little history.

Man said...

942 Lincoln head penny in very good condition on its face but the back is totally blank (not stamped). Worth anything?

Sounds like damage as most of these types are and carry no extra value.

If you still believe it to be a true error it must be seen in hand by an expert who can explain the error. If an error value starts at $20.

Anonymous said...

I don't have an accurate scales to weigh the 1942 penny but I used a micrometer to gauge the thickness along the outer rim and it's identical to a 2008 penny. I feel pretty certain that it hasn't been filed or in any other way defaced. It's just unstamped. Does this help?

Man said...

1942 penny but I used a micrometer to gauge the thickness along the outer rim and it's identical to a 2008 penny.

That brings more problems.
It is possible for two coins to get pressed at the same time leaving one side blank but it would deform the coin making it thinner or larger.
So it maybe be may have been struck through grease still it has to seen in person under high magnification.

1,435,400,000 of the 1944 cent were made. This amount is large and they are often found in mint condition(MS-60)worth $0.50 .
If yours have been in circulation the condition is not great and barely worth $0.05.

If you read the original post I explain a little why it's so common and worth little.

I have a 2009 Silver American Eagle with what I believe is a partial collar error on the obverse (not crazy off center). Is this worth anything extra to any type of coin collector? Or does the US Mint churn out so many bullion coins that this is common?

Anonymous said...

Oh, sorry my Eagle question showed up in the Penny section. Still have to figure this site out.

About $50.00 if it a true Partial Collar but most turn out to be Off-Center errors or damaged collar.

Yes there is...Errors.
Certain cents were accidentally made on dimes blanks they are worth thousands.
Also other types of errors also are worth a lot.

I posted earlier but could not figure out where it went? I have a 1944 what appears to be a steel wheat penny? Is it worth anything?

It has to be weighed to see if it is an error or a fake.

What would a 1944 Solid gold penny be worth? John Stinson Jr.

What would a 1944 Solid gold penny be worth?

This would be an art piece and not a real coin, it would be worth it's weight in gold or if whatever an art auction would sell it for.

Check the weight to make sure it's not just cheaply plated.

1958d silver wheat back penny is steel.

Again this depends on the weight.
Only copper cents were made but errors occurs and also fakes have been made.

I have a 1863 Indian head penny, it has a mis-stamped area on the back side of it, found in attic with an 1879 silver dollar and 1863 three cent cion (it has a C with the Roman III inside). I had a yard sale and a man wanted my penny pretty bad, but I did not sale any of them. What would the penny be worth?

Man said...

What is the "mis-stamp" if you mean Off-Center they average $150.00 but I'm not sure that is what you mean.

1879 silver dollar about $22.00 look for a mintmark under the wreath in the back
1863 three cent about $300.00

Try weighing it first.

It may be an Off-Metal error it needs to be weighed to find out what type of error it is.

A silver error would be about $1,000.00 in average grade.

I have a 1944 wheat penny no mint marks. This coin belonged to my granfather who collected coins. It is in very fine condition appears to be slightly magnetic and is silver in color. If this is an off metal silver coin what should it weigh?

If copper it would weigh 3.11 grams. Any plated-fake would also weigh 3.11.

Silver would weigh 2.50 grams but there are other off-metal possibilities.

Missing digits one cents are common, it has various reason but no extra value.

I have a wheat penny that shows all characters clear, except for the date. It shows 195. It is a D mint, and I believe it would be dated somewhere between 1950 - 1958. The missing last digit of the date does NOT appear to have been worn away. Do you have a value suggestion? Thanks

No extra value, this is some kind of weak strike or struck through grease error that is too common for added value.

Hello, this Page is dated 2008. It's 2010 currently and I'm not sure just how active this page is any longer, but get this...I was given a roll of 1944 Pennies. One, only one was struck "194-". Meaning the latter "4" is not there at all. The single coin is in Fair Condition, just a little dirty. Comparing this one to the others, the DATE is clearly incomplete. I think it's pretty darn cool myself. In reading the earlier posts, "44's" with errors on them are common. Still, I'd like to know if it would be worth more then .20 cents.

If you can not figure out how to click to the NEWEST COMMENTS then I don't know how you'll read my response.

Still it sounds like a struck through grease error, no extra value and will actually lower the value to less than $0.10.

Weigh it and from there you can tell if it is an error or a plated fake.

If it weighs about 3.11 grams it is a worthless plated cent.

Anything and more research needs to be done.

Another 1944 penny mystery. I've read all the other comments but no reference to the cent I have. It is a 1944D but the D is small, appears to be struck slightly lower than the date and semi-separates the 19 and 44. I have another 1944D that looks normal so not sure if this was an error or special run penny. I can't find any info, can you help with a quick history?

The mint marks varies the can be in any postion and some are real close others are tilted others are real low. It does not affect value.
