Canada Penny Find

Do you have a Canada cent and want to find out its value? Leave a comment/question and I will do my best to find out the price and history for you.

I found these two Canadian cents in my pocket change today.

This brings my found Canadian coins to 251. Most of which are not worth much. They must be in a high grade to be sold or bought by dealers.

Here's the stat for these two coins...
Year: 1966
Metal: 98% Copper, 0.5% Tin, 1.5% Zinc
Mintage: 183,644,388
Value: MS-60 $0.10 (mint state 60 out of 70)

Year: 1995
Metal:98% Copper, 0.5% Tin, 1.5% Zinc
Mintage: 624,983,000
Value: MS-60 $0.10 (mint state 60 out of 70)

The oldest Canada cent I found was from 1943 at VG-8 it's worth $0.10, at MS-63 it's $25.00. The only low grade Canadian penny that is valued high a 1955 variety at about $85.00.

Sidenote: I've been using a scanner get a picture of my coins but I think I might try my camera to get more details I never did learn how to properly use the scanner, why start now.

Charlton Standard Catalogue of Canadian Coins is the best coin reference in print.

I do not have your coin or a picture of your coin.
Use your eyes and compare to the images on the middle of the page.

Remember not the top image but scroll down and there are the clearly labeled A varieties.

I think this is damage, no extra value.

That said it might be something else if you can put a picture online somewhere and drop a link here I may be able to verify.

I don't care about 1949 Canadian cents (as I doubt I will ever have any, in any variety), but really, where's the "A"? The As in "CANADA" point to the other side completely, and I would be very interested if you find an A in "GEORGIVS VI D:G:REX ET IND:IMP:" :-)

Anonymous said...

I can't figure out what A it is, do you have a pic that has the whole coin?

Anonymous said...

doesn't it say GEORGIVS VI DEI GRATIA REX on the front?

Man said...

I can't figure out what A it is, do you have a pic that has the whole coin?

Ok now I understand what your asking.

The A the last letter in GRATIA only for the 1948 and 1949 varieties.

For 1965 it is the last A in REGINA.

SF

Far

Near

1966 nickel that has a rotated obverse by about 10%

No real extra value, it has to be 15% or more and high grade.

That said I have seen the sell on auction sites for $2.50 or less in almost-uncirculated.

1918 Canada cents are not magnetic.

The "Magnetism : Magnetic" is completely wrong the site recently was updated and all of these are wrong.
Hopefully it will be fixed but it has been like that for a month.

1918 Canada Cents are 95% Copper, 4% Tin, and 1% Zinc. Again Not-Magnetic.

Plating adds at most 0.10g while the coin it self can be 0.10g in tolerance. 3.24 grams is normal.

Taking that into account this coin sounds plated, not sure if the scale was 0.01g accurate but it is within the margins of normal and plated.

Sorry but all the evidence points to no extra value plated coin.

You always have it graded but that may be a waste of $50.

I have a 1985 Canadian penny that is stamped on a dime blank. I don't know how to grade it. Is it valuable if it is a mint error?
Thanks,

Mac

1985 Canadian penny that is stamped on a dime blank

Should be graded and verified by PCGS or other grading company.
Weigh it to see if it possibly fake.

If real and low grade about $300.00.

Hi I have a penny my daughter found in a porcelain doll we bought, in it's purse. It says Elizabeth II and D.G.REG.F.D.1986 on one side and ONE PENNY on the other. It does not say Canada anywhere. Is it a 1986 coin? Does it have any value?

Where do I take my coins back? To a collector shop or online? How do I get their value in copper, take them to the scrap yard?

Where do I take my coins back? To a collector shop or online?
--A coin shop will give 50% - 80% of the book value.
If you are good with eBay you can get full book value or more.

How do I get their value in copper, take them to the scrap yard?
--You cannot it is illegal to melt copper or nickel coins.
Again you can sell them to others who are hoarding in hopes that one day the law will change.

Selling coins is like sell anything else(furniture, stamps, old toys...). If your a good seller then do it online if not then ask shop around for the best asking price.

I have a 1945 circulated Canadian penny. It seems to be either steel/nickel/chrome/something else that definitely is NOT copper. Haven't been able to find any information online about this coin. Could this be worth anything or do you have any information on it?

Man said...

It should be bronze, weigh it.
By getting the weight in 0.01 grams we can tell if it was plated or a real error.

I have a 1936 U.S. penny. I tried cleaning it with vinegar, (which is a good source if you'd like to clean your coin) but it is still rough. The mint year is legible, Lnicoln is still legible of course, and, as you know, it is a wheat penny. What is it worth?

While I still oppose the use of this mild acids like this it is a common coin so not to much damage.

About $0.15 the lines on the wheat head are a better way to determine grade. The clearer the lines the more valuable.

I have a 1943 steel canadian penny. The websites say its pure steel, and its from the government. is it worth anything or illegal?

1943 steel canadian penny.

What website said this is real?

Wiki said that it was used for making sure coin machines worked, and after they were taken away and melted, and they stopped it in 2002. Its silver colored, and yet it doesnt stick to a magnet.

Cannot be steel if non-magnetic.

Both 1943 Patterns were steel and would be highly magnetic.

I think you may have a plated cent, weigh it to make sure.

Anonymous said...

Steel cents dated before 2002 are test pieces for calibrating coin-operated machines, and are very rare in circulation. Thats all i could find online, last resort is always wiki.

Man said...

Slightly wrong.

These are known as patterns, they are confusing them with "test tokens".

Either way the are nickel or steel and magnetic.

Again weigh it.

eBay is your best bet for a cheap single coin.

Hi I have a Canadian One cent coin from 1943, and the front is the same as the pic you showed. However, the back doesn't have those leaves on it, instead it shows a torch with two little leaves on the sides, and the 19 on one side of the torch and the 43 on on the other. So after that whole long paragraph, I'm really just wondering what it's worth.

If it has a V behind the torch this is not 1 cent but 5 Cents.
This nickel is about $0.20.

1867-1967 penny with a bird on it about $0.03

Although low value I suggest never cleaning it.

That said a quick 3 minute dip in acetone or vinegar. Rinse with distilled water. Dab dry.

Again leaving it dirty is fine and recommended.
