1989 Australian 10 Cents

Do you have an Australian coin and want to know its value? Leave a comment/question

It is the size of a quarter.
It is the weight of a quarter.
But this is not a U.S. quarter that I recently found in my change.

At this point with all the state, territory, bicentennial, and eagle quarters circulating it is not  to clear how a quarter should look like. Although I'm thinking the Queen and a giant 10 would give most people a clue.

Still this Australian dime passed quite easily as quarter.

Here are the stats for this coin...
Type / Country: 10 Cents / Australia
Year: 1989
Mintage: 45,000,000
Metal: Copper-nickel
Value: $0.25 in XF (this one is less than XF)

These are rare I think all the real ones have been found.
That said to be 100% it would have to get graded by a service like PCGS or find a local coin club that can help you for free.
A coin grading company would charge a lot even if fake.

have you ever found a steel penny in your change? what's your rarest and most strange find?

Any counterfeits? I hear a lot of New-Yorkers, retired tourists coming to the berkshires talking about counterfeit bills they've been getting. Don't know if it's just someone preying on them, but i'd like to see one. I think your supposed to call the Secret service about those, that would be a trip!

Yes.

what's your rarest and most strange find?
A 15% off-center Georgia quarter.

Never most NY store clerks can spot a fake in less than a second so I don't think I will ever find one.
Outside NYC I notice clerks aren't that attentive.
I would keep it seeing how the SS would not give me full value.

I just found this same australian coin with the "10" on the reverse in my change this week. Sure enough it is almost the exact same size as the US quarter. I wonder if my local bank would exchange this for me... :-)

If there nice they might but they don't have to. Not even an exchange place would do anything under $100.

I once got a half stamped penny in change from a store. I was down at the time and took it to a coin dealer in Reno NV and he gave me $5. I recently watched a documentary saying it is so rare that these partially stamped coins are worth hundreds of thousands sometimes.

--They have great a geat design as do most Australian coins.

--Yes and no.
A U.S. cent that is 50% Off-Center averages about $10.00 if the date is complete and at least extra-fine.
Some dates are scarce and in high grade of MS-66 (Mint State) or higher can be worth hundreds but not thousands.

Again a lot depends on date, % off center, and condition.
If circulated, date cut-off, and not graded it is lucky to get $5.00.

My 1989 Australian 10c coin has not been milled around the edge, does this make it more valuable ?

It can easily be altered or damaged. So if they coin is normal in every other way then it is not a true error.
