I have a 1947 King George VI Canadian Silver Quarter. I was wondering what this coin is worth?

Man said...

1947 Canadian Quarter
is a great key year.
after the 7 in 1947 if there is...

a dot it is worth $40.00 in fine
and $250.00 in uncirculated

a Maple leaf it is worth $1.50 in fine
and $10.00 in uncirculated

nothing it is worth $1.50 in fine
and $30.00 in uncirculated

Anonymous said...

Can you describe to me what is fine? Does that just mean it is in circulation?

Man said...

Fine is different for every coin type and it gets very specific.
For the 1947 Canadian quarter that comes from circulation it means...

Moderate to considerable even wear. Entire design is bold. All lettering visible, but with some weakness.
For George VI portrait, the eyebrow and cheek bone are worn away. A bald effect is starting, with very little detail of hair remaining. The outline or the ear has flattened.

I was wondering how much it's worth? It's definitely been circulated, but it has no tears or writing on it.
Thanks

Hey, thanks for all your help. I really appreciate it. Anyway, I have some old pennies from the 1800s on up to the 1940s. Some of the pennies are silver instead of copper (can you tell I don't know much about coins by my lack of vocabulary?) I was wondering if you could tell me anything about silver pennies and their worth. Are pennies from 1800s worth more as well?

Man said...

As far as I know the only "silver" cents are the 1943 Zinc-coated steel and they average $0.30.

Depending on the year a cent from the 1800s could be $2.00 to $2,000.00.

I assume these are U.S. coins.

So I have one of these 1947 King George VI Canadian quarters, and it has a large dot next to the year. Were all the quarters in 1947 silver? It's circulated, in very good condition. I saw the first person's post, is mine worth $40?
Thanks!

The Dot Variety has a tiny dot after the number 7. This variety is about $30.00 in very-good.

The large dot in front of the date is not special, it's about $2.00

Yes all were silver.

Does is matter how many of them i have? maybe more than 100..... and do i keep them, because maybe they would go up in value or would it be better to trade for cash. i am learning about collecting coins and dollars, how long do i hang on to them.

It doesn't matter how many you have if they're not graded. You may want to keep the absolute best and have them graded the rest will never gain any real value.
Still in high grades it's only about $4.00 each so sometimes not even grading helps. It will take 30 years before these gain any real value so you'd be better selling or trading the group for one good note or coin.

About $15.00

im a bartender in canada. what are some types of coins (years or markings) that i shouldnt be looking out for. im always going through my change and pulling out the unique and interesting things.
thanks for all your time here.
what you do is great

Man said...

off center $5

Unless you see a piece of another bill or the printing is off-center by 15% or more it has no extra value.

Man said...

In general anything older than 1955 should have a little extra value.
For dimes and higher anything 1968 or older would be real silver.

Aside from that go with your gut if it looks weird or is foreign it just may have some value.

Worse comes to worse it has just face value and you return to circulation.

Hi just came across 432 canadian quarters and 387 canadian dimes from a property i just bought. all of them are from 1938 to 1968 im assuming all silver as no magnet sticks to them\? any ideas other than a 1947 dot quarter i should be looking for thanks

Well it sounds like they are all silver and for quarters there is a 1951 variety where the A in GRATIA points between the denticles.

Aside from errors nothing else stands out.

$3.50 for each quarter
$0.90 for each dime
of course depending on silver value.

hello, i found 36 quarters CDN dating from 1913 to 1968, did the magnet test and none stuck. There are two 1947, and one with a maple leaf after it. Are they worth anything? thanks!

Man said...

On average in low grades each is about $4.50 each.

I list the more valuable coins in low grade...
1915 about $15.00
1921 about $11.00
1927 about $27.00
1936 dot about $30.00
1947 dot about $30.00

The ones with a Maple Leaf are normal only if they have a Dot instead are the worth more.
