Do you have a coin/bill and want to know its value? Leave a comment/question and I will do my best to find out the price and history for you.

Along with buying and getting coins I also regularly get coins books for my own nusmimatic library. Earlier this year I picked up The Official Red Book: A Guide Book Of United States Coins 2007 60th Edition by R.S. Yeoman and also bought Standard Guide To Small-Size U.S. Paper Money 1928 To Date 6th Edition by Oakes & Schwartz.

There is a 7th edition of the Paper Money book coming out in October.

When quoting prices from these books you always have to keep in mind that they are 10-50% more then most dealers will pay for coins or notes. Sometimes they pay less so at that point it would be better to sell them through eBay or other means.

Here are my two newest books.
The 2007 Standard Catalog of World Coins 1901-2000 34th Edition.Overall it is fine not as thick as last years some updated prices but some big errors. The last page for South African coins is missing replaced with a repeated page. For $55.00 you'd expect better. I paid $34.65 at Amazon.com.

Also the 2001-Present World Coins is being sold separately at $30.00 only $18.90 on Amazon.com.

The second book I recently got was this older one Coins of England And The United Kingdom Spink Standard Catalogue of British Coins 38th Edition Spink 2003.
It is an older book I bought for the price of shipping and handling from a cool coin dealer. It is worn but still in good condition. The values are all in pounds but that is okay because it goes as far back as 150B.C.. Yeah two thousan years of coins. It does not list minatges which is somewhat disappointing but it still is great reference for older British coins.

I'm still waiting for the Standard Catalog of World Coins 2001 to Date (Standard Catalog of World Coins: 2001 - Present) to be delivered along with the Charleton Guide and A Charlton Standard Catalogue Canadian Coins 2006 (Charlton's Standard Catalogue of Canadian Coins) by W. K. Cross they will be here in September.

This where most of my coin budget is going because I need to stop the coins for a while as I organize my collection. I'll buy some 2x2 and flips and really try to get rid of coins I don't want by either selling them or giving them away. After that I'll focus on the types, I want to finish a good collection of high grade coins.

Hello,

My wife recently found two 1922 Peace silver dollars given to her on the date of her birth. Neither has been in circulation since that time(1943)and are in excellent condition. We would appreciate your opinion as to their value.
Thank you.

Mike

Man said...

1922 Peace dollars are quite common and in mint state condition they are worth $20.00.
If has full luster and no damage it is MS-65 and worth $165.00.

There are varieties CLICK HERE
High relief always brings $100.00 more on the link I gave look at the back and the PEACE and rock has lots of details it is High Relief if everything looks flat it is low relief.

How much would a 1964 peace dollar be worth ? (in Mint condition)

Man said...

1964 peace dollar if it were real would be $1,000,000. Unfortunately they are illegal to own or sell.

Many copies exist that are fake and are only worth the price of silver.

what does a star mean next to the serial number on a dollar bill? how much is a 1950D $5 bill worth with a star next to the serial number? some of the new $10 bills also have the star? is there anything special about them?

action781@gmail.com

Man said...

A star means that some notes were damaged when made at the Bureau of Engraving and Printing. To replace these notes the government uses notes with a star on them this way they don't have to replace notes with the same serial numbers. Less then 1% of notes are star notes.

It depends on the serial number and condition.
The I-* is about $200.00 in crisp-uncirculated.
The K-* is about $175.00 in crisp-uncirculated.
All others are about $100.00 in crisp-uncirculated.
divide by ten if in less then perfect grade.

Lots of the new bill have this and at first the were rare but now they are worth only a few dollars over face but the DH-* are the most sought after.

Many collectors like them but they are sometimes overpriced. Those from St. Louis(H), Minneapolis(I), and Cleveland(D) are always key districts.

Recently my family has found a 10 dollar bill that my grandfather had stored away. It is from 1922 and has a picutre of Michael Hillegas. We are trying to figure out if this is real money. Also in our findings we found a 3 dollar bill. I can't remeber the actually name but it had a buffalo on it. Can you help us out?

Man said...

10 dollar bill 1922 picutre of Michael Hillegas it is real.
It is the last of the Hillegas gold certificates that were made from 1907-1922.
The average price in good condition is $65.00 in better grades the price jumps by one hundred each time.

3 dollar bill a buffalo can be real these were issued in the 1800s by banks and states. They start at about $50.00 and depending on state and rarity can go for thousands. Lots of counterfeits also exist.

Anonymous said...

Thank you for the perivous information. Again I am asking about the 10 dollar bill with Hillegas and the 3 dollar bill. Where can I find more information on these items.

Man said...

The best place to find information is a book "Standard Guide to Small-Size U.S. Paper Money 1928 to Date"
by John Schwartz. Or

As for websites about this type of money there are very few I know of but this forum is great.

I recently came across a Series 1928 C red stamped five dollar bill. The serial number is E 99581736 A. The condition of the bill is not all that great. It looks like a well worn bill, with a lot of creases and little tears on the edges. About how much is this bill worth? Is it possible that the worth of the bill may eventually go up? Is it worth hanging on to?

Man said...

1928 C red stamped five dollar bill. The serial number is E 99581736 A

In that condition about $9.00.

There is a variety for 1928-C if the back corner number is 938 or below it has double the value listed.

It's a good year but won't go up in value for a long time. If your willing to wait 20 years it may become more valuable.

this same bill has some imperfections on it, like a small black line where it was suppossed to be "cut" at the bottom, and its not 100% centered, but the bill is in great condition.

This may increase the value if it were in better condition so I think the price stays about the same.

Unknown said...

ok thank you, by better condition do you mean no tears or folds? it is barely folded but no tears all. And the back of the bill seems to be a different color, can i fax you the bill??

Unknown said...

i know its not counterfeit because i work at a bank, its legit

Man said...

small black line where it was suppossed to be "cut" at the bottom

This is what is of note, if the black line is just a marker or pen stain then the value stays the same or lowers.
If this black line is a reference guide made by the government to show how the bill is to get cut it raises the value.

As for better condition I meant the difference between Crisp-Uncirculated and Choice-Crisp-Uncirculated these are terms generally given to notes that were never touched by human hands.

Below that uncirculated would have no folds.

If you want you can some free photo site to post the image online and then drop a link here but in less then uncirculated the price evens out no matter what the bill actually has.

As for the color yes it's slightly different then today's note but that is normal.

Unknown said...

yes the line on the bottom is not a pen mark...its a reference guide, and its circulated, but in excellent quality

Man said...

Sounds like a great note overall, is it worth grading?
Probably not but keep it safe and if you happen to be near a currency show or a trusted dealer just inquire about grade and current value.

Once they change the current $100 design again it will go up in value.

Unknown said...

any idea when that would be?

Man said...

any idea when that would be?

The new design was supposed to happen in November but it has been delayed expect it in late 2009 or early 2010. After this all older bills get a slight boost in value depending on how different the new bill appears.

ok thank you

1922 peace dollar that has a "h" stamped into the coin next to the liberty. would you happen to know why its there and if its a high relief coin.

The stamp is some sort of a countermark or personal stamp either way it lowers the value.
The coin is not high relief it's normal.
Just by looks I think the coin has been cleaned which devalues it further.
All said cleaned or not cleaned it's about $8.55 only for metal value.

Man said...

The K11 just is the district letter and number which means Dallas, TX one of the twelve Federal Reserve Banks.
It's about $105.00.

They sell currency holders made from non-PVC material which works fine. The key is no PVC. Coin and hobby shops will sell different kinds hard or soft doesn't matter if you keep it safe.

The KL# or Fr# or Hessler# are just different systems to identify notes for example...
$10.00, Gold Certificate, Series 1922, Speelman-White signatures is identified as KL#442.
I know it's named for the guy who invented this identification system but can't recall the name.

Any small change will bring a new number.

The most valuable are the F06400001*-F06720000* I don't know the corresponding KL# but these average $75.00 in CH-CU. All others are $5.00 or less.
