Hello Do you know anything about errors in dollar
bills? I have a crisp one dollar bill 1981 that is stamped with an "E" on the
front and also on the back.

I responded with...

Man said...
I need a picture to be more exact but it is possible, it is called Overprints on Back, it would also include a weak serial number along with the E.

In crisp uncirculated it would be worth $250.00.
It was a logic response because I didn't know the E was reversed.

Next...

Anonymous said...
I have a picture but how can I show you a picture? The normal cut and paste didn't work. After looking at it closer I see that the E is not stamped on both sides. It has actually bled through to the back. The E is very dark on the back and it is reversed. There are also four 5's that have bled through...as they are reversed, also. The serial number is only visible on the front.
Oh I see things more clearly...

Sounds like you have an Offset Error for one dollar bills its about $75 to $100.

Here's a ten dollar example I used Imageshack to host the image and then the HTML tags a and href
Picture
Anonymous' error sounds like a moderate-lighter version that happened on this ten dollar bill.

An offset error in the 3rd printing of a bill can lead to the "letter seal" and the serial numbers to bleed through the back this is the most common of error notes but still valuable. In one case a 1981 5 dollar bill with a 1 dollar bleed through this of course is a rare and highly valuable.

As you see with the ten dollar error above the prices should be divided by about three for your 1 dollar, so Fine: $50.00 EF: $100.00 CU:$150.00 remember the market changes and see prices reflect the highest you may ever hope to get.

Sidenote: With places like Flickr, imageshack and photobucket or other blogs just drop a link to your photo by using this format
.

i have just bought 2 australian one dollar notes one has the queen as blonde the other has her as brunette.. seems to be a printing error is this worth much ??

Man said...

2 australian one dollar notes one has the queen as blonde the other has her as brunette

This does not sound like an error it sounds like damage, I found nothing about a variety or error.

Maybe you can get a scan of each and show them in Australian currency forum to get more opinions if you believe this is not bleaching damage.

Anonymous said...

they are both uncirculated in mint condition and u still think it could be damage??

Man said...

both uncirculated in mint condition and u still think it could be damage??

If paper then the sun can do this but it could be an error that I'm not aware of that is why I suggest getting could scans before showing others on line.

Without a year or other details I can not give more information.

Ok this was an uncut sheet that someone bought from the government and then cut it to look like an error.

It has no extra value, because it was cut in an attempt at fraud.

I have a twenty dollar bill that is a 2004 series. it has all the markings on it as any other twenty dollar bill I matched it up to. There is barely a border on the top on the bill in the front and a lot of border on the bottom. On the back there is border around it but more on the bottom rather than the top. After the serial number there is not a letter its just a little star. How could I tell if its a fake or just a mess up and then the value as well. Thank you

It is real but the off-center is too minor to add any value.
Depending on the serial number it may have extra value because of the star.

This is sun damage.
The ink used to make money contains black and green without using yellow or blue.
So the only way for the ink to turn yellow is to be bleached by sunlight.
If blue it was bleached by chlorine.

I have a Series 1988 A five dollar bill that is misprinted. Front of bill is cut far right, and you can see the edge of another bill to the far left. Also, there is a number printed in all four corners towards the center (next to signatures, Washington, D.C., etc., and the number (4) overlaps the other text (like D.C. and the signature). The back appears to be fine. Does anyone know anything about this bill?

Ah well, that sucks :-/ if you were able to see the bill up close the number does not look as though it's been rubbed off or anything. It looks like it was just left off. Anyway, thank you for the reply!

Again it could be possible that it is an error but it would be around $15-$45 and to confirm it it would cost $50.

Keep it aside maybe a pro can confirm it for free one day.

I have a 1981 one dollar bill that is in new condition. It seems it was stamped correctly then turned over somehow and restamped on one side. One side has both front and back markings. Was worth $5.00 the day I got it in 1981 I was told. Any idea as to value now?

Hi, I came across a 2003 A series $100 dollar bill with some strange markings on it. First across the front there is a blue line going vertical from the top almost to the bottom of the bill running between the F and K of the serial number. Also there are 4 stampings on the back.
1.
WV
also blue could be same ink as the line?
2.
KC
M-0
in a partial circle open at the bottom darkblue/purple
3.
ND 3
black
4.
rda
all lower case but the "a" is half the text size. also black.

Not sure if the bill is worth anything or what any of these markings are from, any help would be nice. Thanks

One more thing there is also a small blue triangle on the bottom edge left side front of the bill.

I have a 1988 (one) dollar bill, the front is normal.
However the back, although complete, is printed all the way to the right. The entire backside design is shifted all the way to the right side edge of the cut; with no margin on the right and a large margin on the left.
The bill is in excellent shape.
Could you please tell me the approximate value?
Thanks in advance.

I have a few quick questions about the star notes. I work at a bank and see those star notes come and go daily, and I've read that some are worth more than face value? Are all star notes worth more than face value or is it just certain star notes?

Man said...

Are all star notes worth more than face value or is it just certain star notes?

Most have a little value over face mostly just a few cents.

But certain types do have extra value that is because sometimes millions are printed and sometimes only a few thousand are printed.

A book or a magazine would help understand which are valuable but this site can help...
http://www.uspapermoney.info/serials/
any issue 640,000 or less have real value.

Anonymous said...

Man said...

2003A 100 dollar FH00043743* about $125.00 in uncirculated.
About $250.00 in choice uncirculated.

I would add that with modern stars they often get high grades so even a good grade like choice-uncirculated is low valued.
Grades like superb gem choice uncirculated PPQ 68 are what collectors want.

Not possible the highest note printed is 99,200,000.
The government does note print complimentary notes. Instead after the 99200000 comes star notes begin with 00000001.

This would be a Fancy Note in that shape maybe $5.00 at most.

Look up fancy notes or repeater dollars and you'll see the market, most desirable are crisp-uncirculated.
