I See Stars

Do you have a coin/bill and want to know its value? Leave a comment/question and I will do my best to find out the price and history for you.

Just replying to questions I think most people should keep in mind when looking through your bills.

what does a star mean next to the serial number on a dollar bill?
A star means that some notes were damaged when made at the Bureau of Engraving and Printing. To replace these notes the government uses notes with a star on them this way they don't have to replace notes with the same serial numbers. Less then 1% of notes are star notes.

how much is a 1950D $5 bill worth with a star next to the serial number?
It depends on the serial number and condition.
The I-* is at most $200.00 in crisp-uncirculated.
The K-* is at most $175.00 in crisp-uncirculated.
All others are at most $100.00 in crisp-uncirculated.
divide by ten if in less then perfect grade.

some of the new $10 bills also have the star?
Lots of the new bill have this and at first the were rare but now they are worth only a few dollars over face but the DH-* are the most sought after.

is there anything special about them?
Many collectors like them but they are sometimes overpriced. Those from St. Louis(H), Minneapolis(I), and Cleveland(D) are always key districts.

Do you have a coin/bill and want to know its value? Leave a comment/question and I will do my best to find out the price and history for you.

Hey Man -

Funny story - my sister and I were in a restaurant telling me about starred serial numbers on dollar bills... and I looked through my wallet and said... "like this one?" She's so mad at me :) I didn't know what they were!

Would you mind terribly giving me some feedback? It's a $10 bill, Series 1999 Serial Number: BC06378846

It has a pretty bad crease down the middle, but otherwise fair condition.

Thank you!
Laine

A star note is a replacement note when the regular notes are damaged. Very few star notes are made compared to regular notes.
Some are very rare but others are more common.

$10 bill, Series 1999 Serial Number: BC06378846*

About $12.50 this is a common star note.

4 uncut one dollar bill star notes from 1999 richmond district. Do you know much about them and how much they're worth? I think they might be the only uncut 1 dollar star notes ever produced but I cant find anything about it?

These were sold by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP) and 640,000 were made specifically to be sold in sheets.

There about $85.00. I think they were the first released but I'm not positive if they are the only ones released because the 2003A star notes also came in sheets but I don't own any and haven't seen it.

Man said...

1914 $5 bill for $85

Before 1928 the bills were larger, if it is a red seal I say that is about right in good condition they're about $50.00 or more.

A blue seal would only be about $25.00.

Instead it is common.

Yellow seals are special North African star notes in very good/ fine it is about $150.00.

Very nice note and in higher grades may be worth thousands.

The bill I have is hard to describe but it is a flag error with the bills on each end included.

This is a major cutting error and worth about $1,500.00 if certified.

Also I can't tell if thats a bad picture or are the serial numbers smudged, they look weird.

PenGuiN said...

Sorry they are blurred out because of a fourm I posted them in the past here are the serial numbers

1) F 28407881 F
2) F 28407882 F
flag just has 7882 F
3) F 28407883 F

Note Number Position is G2 on all of them
except the flag does not have that number but
it would have been an H2 I believe.

Plate Serial Numbers are
1) FW G 104
2) FW G 102 flag FW H 102
3) FW G 105

Man said...

I just wanted to see the serial numbers to see if this could come from an uncut sheet. It is not meaning this is a real error.

Having all three bills together is great and I would invest in having them graded.

I have a general question... if a note is graded at gem 65 by pmg but doesn,t state epq (exceptional paper quality) does that mean something is wrong with the paper? and if so, how can it be gem??

Man said...

if a note is graded at gem 65 by pmg but doesn,t state epq (exceptional paper quality) does that mean something is wrong with the paper?

Yes it means that the grader believes that some or part of the note has been restored/cleaned.

Generally all PMG graded at 65 or above should automatically be EPQ.

and if so, how can it be gem??
That is the strange part it should be automatic. Maybe a resubmission should be done.
It could be a mistake or an older graded note, some early graded notes did not carry the EPQ standard.

Anonymous said...

Hi and thanks for your answer! yes, it happens to be an older graded note back when epq wasn't yet used! it is a gem unc 65 1934 $100 Boston "mule". That is a great price. Maybe you should think about grading it again. They will automatically add the mule and it should grade the same.

I have around 15 notes that are graded. I'm not sure yet whether I will sell, trade, or keep them. I was wondering if the warm weather or humidity can get inside of the sealed protection on these notes? I live in Illinois, and it can get quite humid here. What is the best way to store these graded notes? I really do not want to hide them away in a safe deposit box! Thank you for your time!!

Man said...

Unfortunately the best way to store them is a safety deposit box.

While the packaging offers some measure of protection light will affect the notes the most.

But notes are fairly strong and the biggest problem is acid from paper/PVC/plastic so in these holders they are fine.

Man said...

1923 red seal note! ... fr#40 ... graded @ 64 by pmg, with a side note of "great color" nothing about epq ...serial # is odd ... A403B

The reason the Serial # is odd is because these are United States Notes or Legal Tender Notes.
The ones we are use to are Federal Reserve notes.

It's about $500.00 the key is that you have a very low serial number. In the right auction it may go for twice the book value.

As for me I would pay up to $650.00 for that note, but I'm not a fan of large size notes.

It's about $15.00 this is a fairly recent bill and the price changes fast.

1950-A $20.00 star note from the Philly district. It is graded by CGA @ 66 gem unc

$250.00 is the book price and for a CGA graded bill it's about right, maybe a little less.
If this was PCGS it would state either EPQ or not. This would raise the value to a little over $300.00.

If I bought this note I'd pay no more than $250 and resubmit it to another grading company.

These were issued by South Carolina and authorized by Niles G. Parker to lift the burden of liability of the Blue Ridge Railroad Co. Which the state had a huge, over 50%, investment of share, bonds, and stock.

These are known as Reconstruction Periods Notes or Obsolete notes but they are generally not rare. You can pick up an ungraded note in crisp for about $50.00.

In Gem 65 they go for about $225.00. They were found to be unconstitutional but I believe Parker died before that happened.

There is a rare 1873 version with less then 200 printed but I've never seen it.

2. It's one of the last S-C notes

So it still has a book value of $200.00 but it the right auction it may go up to $300.00.

The K11 stands for Dallas where the federal reserve for that district is located.

The star note is a replacement note for other notes that were damaged.

Yours is the more common star note and is about <$135.00 in crisp uncirculated.

If graded it may bring raise the value if it can be almost-uncirculated or higher, but if you think it will not be above very-fine then it's best to keep it ungraded.

Unless the off-center shows a second design it is won't add value. If the off-center is shows a lot of white space but no other design it may lower the value.

In crisp uncirculated they're about $35.00 each.

I know they've been listed at $750 but since 2004 they've been selling for $600.00. The market for this one has remained flat.

I think it is a fair price over $700 is not good.

Depends on serial number.

$100 bill with a misprint on the front and back. On the front, the whole right border is missing. On the back, the left half of the note is slanted downward while the right half is perfectly aligned.

It sounds weird maybe it's a gutter fold error or some type of misalignment.
Either way it's starts at about $125.00 in fine but you would have to either get it graded or post a picture online so experts can see what's going on.

Generally these go for about $200.00 I use to know of a few that graded 66 and higher but they haven't been up for auction, so it hard to adjust for current value.

Were it Akron, PA or Coalport, PA I'd be more excited or even if you ever get lucky a Philadelphia.
I don't own any and if your going to take the next step I urge you to join several Coin Forums like CollectorsUniverse Forum and coincommunity.com/forum.

They have guys there obsessed with Nationals.

About $750.00 but I've seen this value for PCGS graded notes.
Not that CGA isn't good but the crossovers are not the same.

Still you did well in this purchase. The values of National have remained flat over the last few months but I think that will change with the economy.

100.00 bill, Series 1950 D With a Star at the end of the SN. Crisp uncirculated.
Depending on serial number it starts at about $200.00.

1950-E are most valuable and 1963-A are the least but of course grade and serial number are very important.

If most are cruddy or even maybe be moldy then just face value but any 1950-E or star notes will retain extra value.

It sounds like a cutting error if minor just a few dollars above face.
Only if the error is very large is it worth hudreds.

About $100.00 in very-fine.

1963a 100.00 dollar bill serial number 01033621
The serial number is incomplete but the entire series is very common so about $110.00. in extra-fine.

About $110.00 this is a common note and in a low grade so it would be very difficult to sell. eBay is the best place as dealers or larger auction houses will not buy these common notes.

Honestly with all the fees and hassles of eBay just spending it would not be a big loss.
