Old Dollar Find

Do you have old currency and want to know its value? Leave a comment/question and I will do my best to find out the price and history for you.

After Christmas I went to do some post-holiday shopping and received this bill in my change.

I found a 1935H dollar also known as a silver certificate. Notice the seal is blue instead of green.

The H in 1935H means the design was modified from the original 1935 bill, probably to add a new signature of a treasurer.

Here's a sample of what I found in my change over the last ten years.
$1.00 bills
1935E value in very good(VG) = $1.50
1935H value in VG = $2.00
1957-star note value in VG = $2.00
1957A value in VG = $1.25
1969B value in VG = $1.25

$2.00
1928G value in VG = $7.50
1953A value in VG = $4.00

$20.00
1950C value in VG = $25.00

Of course some are higher grades but most are very good.

Prices updated to 2008.

Do you have old bills and want to know its value? Leave a comment/question and I will do my best to find out the price and history for you.

1043 dollars worth, for Comments/Questions click here.:

Yes you are correct the book I referenced is wrong it has a print of 3,840,000.

Sorry about that it would have a value of about $75.00 they were printed in June of 2007 with 1 run of 384,000.

$5 2003 series DG 00751492*
I double checked on this and this one is about $20.00 with a printing of 1,280,000 from March 2005.

That site is very good and obviously updates more often then the books.

What does the B656and the E 6606 Mean?

The letter B and E are the plate positions.
Back in the day plates were placed 12 or 18 at a time to print a sheet of 12 or 18 notes.
12 sheet were placed like this...
A G
B H
C I
D J
E K
F L

The numbers are the plate number. Each plate gets it's own number and when they get old they are disposed of and a new plate is put in it's place.

The $5 front K1989 back 1806

This is the more common Wide Face variety worth about $50.00. If the front number was 2028-2031 or the back number was 637 or 629 it would be more. The difference is just a slight change in the design so small it's easier to describe through the numbers.

Don't know if it matters on the $2
front R5 Back 408

No. There are no significant varieties just two issues, one with a star and one without.

I'm not familiar and tried to find some decent websites but could not. I'm sure there exist books and websites but it's outside my current range.

Always try eBay. I still find the coin and currency sold(completed auctions) are fair market values.

Honestly a good fake can only be known by experts.
Does it look aged? Does it feel old? Those are good indicators.

I've seen copies so real it takes a microscope to tell. Sorry but this one has to be seen in hand by a dealer or expert.

Man said...

Ooops forgot about value. It's about $20.00 in very-fine, this is one of the most common confederate notes and about 40 varieties exist, again if real an expert with the note in hand can tell if which variety this bill is.

Man said...

Is there any coins or paper money I should be on the look out for?

Older money is always good, high grade is also good especially for long term value.
Errors are also great. Foreign money is usually low value but there are still many worth it.

Basically if it looks odd it does not hurt to put it aside. Maybe pick up a coin/currency book or magazine with values and you'll see a pattern on what to look for and what to let pass.

Sounds like a 1942 over 1 dime it is a famous error that is about $625.00 in fine.
If graded at mint state it's about $2,000.00.

This is a great coin and should be verified by a grading company.

I have several old bills. These were apparently circulated until the 1960's or 70's when I got them, they are now just laying in an envelope in a safe. I only took out two to see if they are more valuable than just face value. These are in good but circulated condition:

100 bill, 1934 C
K01945697A
E01125246A
I have more, and other denomination with the same year.

No those things don't mean anything important.
For the bills you mentioned all the information you supplied was enough.

For other notes in 1934 like the $20 and $1 I would need the year, series letter(1934-C or 1934-D), serial number,
back number, front number- these are the little numbers in the bottom on back or front.
