$20 Dollar Bill Error?

Do you have note or currency and want to know its value? Leave a comment/question and I will do my best to find out the price and history for you.

Hello

I was wanting to find out if you would be able to help me
I have 8 consecutive 20 dollar bills without the little 20 printed on the back of any of them
I have enclosed a picture of the front of one and the back of another
would you be able to tell me what they are worth
any help would be greatly appreciated
Thank You
Belinda

Error 20'S

Wow she linked pictures and everything.
And if you thought that would simplify it you were wrong.

This was beyond my knowledge, beyond my Web search, even beyond my books. So I looked into my network of collectors who also never saw this error.

The small yellow "20"s on the back is an anti-copying security feature,
--Check for the nylon thread on the front to the left of the left side-dark seal.
--Check for the watermark of Jackson's head on the front to the right of the right-sided green seal.
--Hold the bill in front of a light to see the hidden features.

If they are not there then you have counterfeit bills. Which also has value.

If they are there then the bills are real and according to my source each bill is worth $200.00 for a total of $1,600.00. (This is only an educated guess since yours are the first reported.)

Thanks for the visit Belinda and sorry for the long delay but it is a new bill and a strange error.

If I have more updates or find them on eBay I'll post a link but I'd try to sell half of them to a local dealer before more are found.

Here is a cool error that sold on eBay for $10,100 in May 2003 and now sold at $25,300.
It's called the "banana note" and has a Del Monte sticker that fell on it midway during printing and was not caught and destroyed.

Do you have note or currency and want to know its value? Leave a comment/question and I will do my best to find out the price and history for you.

This would be known as an Obstructed Printing error with Retained Piece.
To me it looks like glue but I have little knowledge on tobacco.
These are about $400.00 but if graded it may go up as long as the piece doesn't fall off.
With the Coin World letter and a short description of where you found the note this makes a nice collection that would add $100 to the final price depending on grade.

This is a Minor Exterior Fold error and is about $80.00.

I have a mint condition 1985series 1 dollar bill with several errors on the front and it's also cut wrong with the top showing a small section of another bill. The bottom is naturally cut off short. The 2 seals (black and green) are reversed and are too high on the bill. Both SN's on front are upside down and so is the # 7 near them. The Sn's are G81925303G. Hopefully this is enough detail for an estimate. Thanks!!

This is considered damage for most collectors but as a novelty they sell for $4.00.

mentioned in other responses that it might depend on the SN

In your case the SN are normal and not low so the value does not change.

I have a 2003 $1 bill. The serial number is E 37343066 C. The front is normal print. On the reverse (back) side, along with the normal print, is a reverse, ghost image of the front. First off, I have seen some images on ebay that have been classified as Faux errors. How do I tell if this is original, and if so, what would the value be.

What would be the best method to sell this item?

Unfortunately with today's printers these can be easily faked. Only under high magnification can it be seen by experts. It's tough to tell.

This sounds like an Ink Transfer error it would be about $25.00.
EBay may be the best place to sell since they're common and few people buy them if not graded because of all the fakes.

Not possible so it would be worthless.

Fakes are made all the time using printing machines. The real government bills are made from metal plates that are etched by hand so never will there be a mistake like that or any design element mistake.

No printing error will have just a portrait different. Printing errors have been cataloged for years and the type type you describe is not possible.

When the person does not give the date I assume they mean the current bill.

Plus you forgot that I also wrote this...
Man said...

I guess this wasn't "real" money as I don't think George has ever been on a 20 dollar bill ?

It is fake but the money is still regulated by the government. Back in the day it was completely illegal to show real money on films so the secret service prints fake money for movies.

Now the rules are different but I don't know them exactly.

That said yes Washington appeared many times on the $20 bill.
The most famous is the 1905 technicolor $20. It sells for about $1,000 to $100,000.

This is either an exterior or interior fold error.
Exterior is normal size when unfolded and about $450.00.
Interior is larger in size when unfolded and about $250.00.

Man said...

Whoops forgot the second part of your question.

The more expensive the less common.

You may want to have it graded by PCGS or any currency company that deals in errors.
It may cost $40.00 or more but with a high grade it will increase the value.
If you want to sell auctions houses like eBay or Heritage may be the best place but local dealers or a currency forum to sell privately.

Pictures will be required so good scans will increase value wether or not it's graded.

This sounds like a Gutter Fold error and it is about $250.00.
It can be another type of error but they are about the same in value. To get the exact type and value it would be best to have it graded.

They are very collectible.

Not really, the consecutive serial numbers are not special unless it is a rare series.

To determine if these are rare or low printed notes just leave one serial number and the year.

Extra ink is a common error and as far as I know holds no extra value. Unless the ink is blotting out part of the design.

These are common but if Crisp-Uncirculated at most it is $25.00 each but since it's common/new it is not marketable right now.

I assume you meant 2004-A and it depends on serial number but the average is about $30.00.

Hiya,

Just found your site and it's incredibly helpful.

Last night while I was counting down drawers at work I stumbled across this Twenty. It's obviously wallet worn and the counterfeit pen is still fading.

http://img17.imageshack.us/img17/4913/20billf.jpg

But it's missing the department of treasury seal. That seal is also not on the back or anywhere else on the bill. The bill is not counterfeit either. It has the Jackson Watermark, the tiny 20's, and the USATWENTY strip.

Do you know how much it may be worth and why it might have been printed like that?

Zac said...

Nevermind, I scrolled up and read some comments. Sorry to bother you about stuff you've already answered.

Man said...

Zac - It is never a bother. Prices change all the time and no two notes are the same so value changes a lot.

In your case I would say it's about $50.00.

The treasury seal is placed the same time as the serial numbers but from a different ink jet. If it runs out/gets blocked/ can't print/etc. the printing should stop but in this case it did not.

I have 2 1976 series two dollar bills I am comparing, both have 7's in all four corners on the obverse. The 7's on the left side on one bill are closer to the edges, where as the 7's on the other bill on the right side are closer to it's edges.
The rest of both bills are perfect, only the 7's in the corners are alligned differently.
Are either worth anything?

Anonymous said...

After closer inspection, one of the 2 dollar bills appears to be normal, where the second one seems to have all of the 7's up and to the right a bit. The bottom right 7 is actually touching the bottom of the G72.

For a Misaligned Overprint error to have any value it must go over completely over a part of the design.

They average about $40.00 but with National bank notes it's hard to say since there are over 7,600 and I don't have good resources.

For an exact price try visit a local coin club or a forum that specializes in Nationals.

Sounds like an Offset Printing Error it's about $125.00 in extra fine.

Sounds like a shrunken dollar sold as novelty in magic shops.
It has no real value.

Anonymous said...

This has been bugging for decades (lol) and I hope you can give me an answer.
Back in 1972 I came across a new one dollar bill that had an extra piece of paper in the lower right hand corner. On top of that the extra piece had double folded so it looked about normal but when you pulled the extended piece out there was a blank space where that fold was printed on and the actual part of the bill (front and back).

I hope that made sense. I’m just wondering if that type of an error would make the bill worth anything back then, or today.

Thanks.

BTW… Before I could get my hands on the bill the person that had it cut the extra piece off to “square” the bill - but you still had the separation from were the fold was. Plus some of the print in the lower right hand corner was cut off when he sized it.

Man said...

Unfortunate.
This was a minor Printed Fold or Gutter Fold error it would be about $25.00 in new condition.
Unfortunately most of it's value was destroyed when it was further cut. Maybe at most $3.00 now.

Hi,

I have 2 $10 bills from 1990, serial numbers are almost sequential (one inbetween is missing).

They show a progression of either cutting or alignment errors. The first bill is much more close to being normal, but the second one is cut off at the top, the green treasury seal and serial numbers are offset on the right hand side.

Is this worth anything more than $10?

Ben

Man said...

2 $10 bills from 1990...alignment errors

The bills have a Minor Faulty Alignment, a Minor Ink Smear, and a Minor Offset Printing.

All errors so minor that it would normally bring down the Crisp-Uncirculated value.

I would say about $25.00 for the pair due to condition. For the right collector, one who has the missing in-between note it may be worth something. But if you need to use them it is no big loss.

It sounds like an outside damage as an Ink Smear error would be black.
If some type of solvent error it would be about $100 but this one must be seen in person to tell if it's a real error.

Not possible as far as I know, it would be a fake with no extra value.

One possible error is an Offset Printing error where the same image either bleeds or is ink-transferred to the other side. They average about $150.00.
So one side is normal but the other has two printings.

It apparently occurred during printing because there is no ink within the space of the wrinkle on the front or back of the note and on the back the printing to the left of the wrinkle is slightly higher than the right side. It is one of the newly designed bills minted in 1996 and has a good bit of wear, mostly from folding at the center and some light staining around the edges.
Any idea on the possible value?

For a sale since this is common eBay is your best shot.

For a trade or possible sale a local coin dealer or maybe try a coin/currency forum.

The problem with either is for a common error it may take a long time, maybe after the new $100 bill in 2010 comes out interest in older errors will peak.
If you can't sell it and use it at face value no big loss.

Hey, great blog, great resource, glad you put so much time and effort into answering people's questions Man! How about this one? I have a series 2004 $20 bill with an inch long streak of silver ink on the right side (observe), it starts above the serial number and crosses over the bottom right portion of the twenty seal (somewhat transparently). The same ink mark is present on the reverse but flipped upside down so when you hold the bill to the light the marks form an x. It looks pretty cool actually, like crossed swords over Jackson's watermark face! The marks are exactly the same and won't rub off easily so I'm almost positive it's a printing error (also the reverse one looks textured like it was pressed on there). The ink looks like nothing else on the bill so previous owners probably thought someone took a silver sharpie to it. Condition is average - couple of folds and two tiny holes near the middle that look like someone took a stapler to it. Will provide pics of necessary!

This is some sort of paint damage.
The printing machines never use any silver colors.
There have been Ink Smear errors with the holographic ink but they are more golden in color and only on one side.

If you still think this is an error take good scans of both sides and post it on a photo site for myself or experts on errors can view it.
