Canada Penny Find

Do you have a Canada cent and want to find out its value? Leave a comment/question and I will do my best to find out the price and history for you.

I found these two Canadian cents in my pocket change today.

This brings my found Canadian coins to 251. Most of which are not worth much. They must be in a high grade to be sold or bought by dealers.

Here's the stat for these two coins...
Year: 1966
Metal: 98% Copper, 0.5% Tin, 1.5% Zinc
Mintage: 183,644,388
Value: MS-60 $0.10 (mint state 60 out of 70)

Year: 1995
Metal:98% Copper, 0.5% Tin, 1.5% Zinc
Mintage: 624,983,000
Value: MS-60 $0.10 (mint state 60 out of 70)

The oldest Canada cent I found was from 1943 at VG-8 it's worth $0.10, at MS-63 it's $25.00. The only low grade Canadian penny that is valued high a 1955 variety at about $85.00.

Sidenote: I've been using a scanner get a picture of my coins but I think I might try my camera to get more details I never did learn how to properly use the scanner, why start now.

Charlton Standard Catalogue of Canadian Coins is the best coin reference in print.

Man said...

6 1955 canadian pennies in good shape. 4 of the six I believe are of the no shoulder fold variety. How can I tell?

An easier way to tell is looking at the I in DEI if it points between two rim denticles it is a no-shoulder-fold.
If it points exactly to a rim denticle it is a shoulder-fold.

If you can take a great picture/scan of the the word DEI and the rim then just host it on a free site then drop a link.

Man said...

Also I'll add there are two shoulder fold varieties for 1955 one with small denticles and one with large.

About $2,700.00 in very good there are only 460 known examples and many fakes.

There were 345,140,645 minted so that is very common. The value is for the metal content and varies from 2 to 4 cent.
Personally I found 10 of those coins in my change.

Canadian nicket that has "1751-1951"
About $0.20 this one had 9,028,507 which is less common but not rare.

The condition is important it must be red, no marks, and highly detailed. Even with it has a small value since it is common and often found in high grades.

About $1.70 mostly for silver content in fine.
It's always worth more in coin form.
If the grade is very-fine it's about $2.50 and of course higher grades means greater value.

Man said...

5 cent usa the year 2000 its the colour is like a copper could it be ?
Yes they are several reasons this error can occur.
The easiest way to test is by weight if it weigh anything besides 5 grams it may be a valuable error.
Still if it weighs almost/exactly 5 grams it could be Sintered but that has to be checked by experts.

Man said...

If the coins have marker stains this may be professional cleaned but each coin is about $1.00 each so it's not worth it. A dip in Isopropyl Alcohol might remove the marker stain.

It sounds damaged but it could be an error called Cap or Brockage. You may want to post pictures online or contact a local dealer as this type of Canadian error is not often seen. If it were U.S. it's more common so that is why I'm hesitant.

If shape of the cent is distorted not a perfect flat disk then it's likely a cap error, if not the I'm stumped.

No. As far as I know all 1964 cents are normal.

1953 anything special to look for?
Yes for 1953,1954, and 1955 there is a shoulder fold variety with the No Shoulder Fold for 1955 being worth hundreds.
Look at the shoulder if there is a fold or strap then it's the more common type. If you can't tell look at the I in DEI if it is straight(non-flared) and point directly to a denticle(not in between) it's the Shoulder Fold type.

Man said...

1969 canadian penny with maple leaf side in tact but queen side is blank and smooth

It is either damaged or a error involving to coins smashed together. This can only be identified in person because a fake can be made easily. Try a local dealer or coin club.

Can you explain the Canadian mint marks, especially the pennies? My Whitman coin folder shows 2002, 2002P, 2003, 2003P, etc. I have yet to find a Canadian penny with a P mint mark. We live in the US, so we don't see that many Canadian coins. I have seen other denominations with the P however. Also, I have a 2006 penny with no mint mark and another 2006 with the new mint mark. Did the new mint mark replace the P or the blank? I'm just trying to figure out which holes to stick the coins in.

thanks,
Ken

Man said...

Can you explain the Canadian mint marks, especially the pennies?

I'm also from the U.S. and I have found several Canadian cents with the P mintmark. I agree they are confusing.

Just for pennies...
W mintmarks mean it was made in the Winnipeg Branch usually they make proofs.

P introduced in 1999 and lasted until 2006 is for Multi-Ply Steel.

Blank is for Copper-Plated Zinc.

Maple Leaf Logo is on Copper-Plated Zinc from 2006 to now.

WP is a Multi-Ply Steel from Winnipeg.

Some 2006 and 2007 were issued in both Steel and Zinc core which can only be known by using a magnet.

"Did the new mint mark replace the P or the blank?"
Good question and currently I'm not sure.
Yes it replaced the P.
But blanks have still been issued without any marks made of steel. ????

Since I'm going by the books it takes some time before these issues are settled.

Yes it's a penny from Canada.
Nothing special or varieties.
98% copper the remaining is tin and zinc.
The ET IND: IMP: was a Latin phrase added from 1937-1947 to indicate the king was Emperor of India. It's about $0.10 in very-good.

Shoulder fold is a variety on certain 1950s Canadian coins that has an extra fold on the shoulder of the queen.

It was King George before the current queen. Older coins have different kings and queens.

I have a sack of 600 1964 uncirculated canadian pennies, I just broke the seal on the bag from the Ottowa mint. Anyone know their value?

Man said...

1964 uncirculated canadian pennies

About $0.15 each if graded, about $0.10 or less if raw. Assuming Mint-State 60 in each case.

Unknown said...

I am sorry but what does graded mean and what does raw indicate. They are in mint state as I just opened the mint sealed bag, so do you mean .60 US coin? Where can one sell these?

Man said...

I am sorry but what does graded mean and what does raw indicate.
Sorry I wasn't clear.

Graded means it was sent to a coin company and given a grade between 1-70.

Raw is just open and you are assuming the coins are high quality with no third-party proof.

They are in mint state as I just opened the mint sealed bag, so do you mean .60 US coin?

Mint-State 60 is a grade meaning uncirculated, bright red, and untouched/unmarked by human hands.

1 is very low
60 is high
70 is perfect

Where can one sell these?
Ebay is the only place because these are very common, it would have sold for more if the bag was left unopened but it's too late now.

A dealer might give you 2 to 5 cent per coin if your lucky. Maybe wait for copper prices to go back up since these have high copper content.

Unfortunately opening the sealed bag devalued the entire lot and made it harder to sell in this economy.

Bags of 600 sell for about $30.00 easily on ebay. The price of $0.15 or less would be for coins that can be proven to grade high and unless it can be verified most collectors won't buy them from a first time seller.

Anonymous said...

Thank you so much for the education! My Dad has about two more bags of these, still sealed so we might attempt to sell them. They actually have 6,000 coins in each, not 600. Very Heavy! So thank you again.

1947 has a blunted and pointed 7 variety
1948 and 1949 has the last A in GRATIA that points either between the denticles or directly at the denticle plus a small & large denticle variety
1953-1955 has a shoulder fold variety plus a small & large denticle variety
1965 has a small & large bead variety plus a pointed and blunted 5 variety
1983 has a near & far bead variety
1985 has a blunted and pointed 5 variety
From 1999 to now there are some composition and mintmark varieties.

A good book to look through is the Charlton Standard Catalogue Canadian Coins 2009 or older because the have good images that show the varieties.

Man said...

1932 Canadian penny probably MS66 or MS67 red.

Don't often see these up for auction so I'm checking older sales.

MS-66 about $450.00
MS-67 about $800.00

Recently the highest I've seen sold is MS-64 for about $200.00. If the older values seem low it's only because I'm guessing the would be tough to sell.

I'm assuming it's less than 25% clip and it's about $1.00 the 1970s in Canada had a lot of these so usually only high grades carry a better premium.

Doubling can be anywhere but a true Doubled Die is curved or round and affect more of the coin.
This sounds like machine doubling which has a flat look these are worthless.
Even if a true Doubled Die it is a minor one probably about $1.00 or less.

This is either a partial collar or struck off center either way it's minor and may bring the value up to $1.00.
It must have been stuck slightly outside the collar and then struck again while in the collar.

There are 2 varieties:
1936 is about $0.15
1936 dot is about $100,000.00

A delay in 1937 forced coins to be struck with the old 1936 dies. The old 1936 dies were marked with a dot under the date to indicate they were actually from 1937.
Only 3 examples were authenticated others have been found but are so weak they can not be verified.

For about a year now I've been collecting canadian coins mostly from circulation (I live in Canada) and now I have a lot of coins including every penny from 1960 to 2009, except 1990. Was there a low mintage of this coin or something?

every penny from 1960 to 2009, except 1990. Was there a low mintage of this coin or something?

The average mintage is 500 million or more the 1990 cent had about 210 million made so while lower then normal it is not rare or scarce.

I have the same problem I have almost every Canadian cent from circulation except 1990. It's odd.

I have been setting aside canadian pennies for about 30 years now. I have been following your e-mails for about 6 months and see that Canadien coins are very much like US coins in that there are many oddities and other issues that make it hard to follow. Is there an online reference that I can go to to see what oddities there are as well as the prices of all Canadien pennies. I have many that are from the early 1900's and would hate to send you a long list to advise me on if I can look them up myself.

Thanks.
