An Error Penny

Do you have an error penny and want to know its value? Leave a comment/question and I will do my best to find out the price and history for you.11a

On May 22 of this year I was searching through my change at the end of the day and found a 1956 wheat cent, which was ok they are worth about in that condition.

I left the coin on my desk because I was too busy to catalog my newest find. Then a few days later I noticed some crud on the coin then I looked closer and saw it was actually excess copper between the B and E in LIBERTY.
11
Immediately I recognized it was a "BIE" error and sure enough I got my error book out and there it was as clear as day.

Here's this coin stats...
II-F-4 BIE Die Variety (W) = a die break or crack between the B and the E.
Fairly common in the years 1955-1958 and value at $1.00 to $20.00.
I figure due to all the green spots and circulation wear that mine is closer to $1.00.

For a while BIE pennies became very popular and the BIE Guild was formed. Soon so many of these errors were found that the value went down and the collectors stopped tracking these coins. The BIE Guild dissolved and now unless the coin is proof or in excellent shape the premium for this error is low.

Here is a better picture of this type of error from LeeG(an expert collector) he also found a 1956 BIE but as you see in a higher grade.Do you have an error penny and want to know its value? Leave a comment/question and I will do my best to find out the price and history for you.

1459 dollars worth, for Comments/Questions click here.:

1961 what appears to be a DDO

That does not appear to be a genuine Doubled Die.

It seems like an extreme Die Clash error or some sort of damage.

I would say it has no extra value, but I cannot be 100% percent as most of the images are poor quality.

Contact local coin shops or coin clubs to view this coin in hand.

Online try:

Or coin forums like:

im fairly sure its not damage at least around the one cent. the wavy lines im not sure about ive read things before about waves on pennies so i dont know. i would like to think it had a little value to it considering some of the other coins out there that go for hundreds and you can hardky tell whats wrong with them

Man said...

Wave like that is general from erosion or post mint heating. Often lines like that are seen in coins that have been burned then sanded.

Again I agree the doubling is extreme but not true doubling and those are the ones with value.

About $0.30.

The rare type worth $1 million or more is the copper error.

Normal ones were Zinc plated steel and very magnetic.

Hi there,
I was wondering about these coins i have a 1976 5 cent coin with a very deep D mintmark,
the coin is much thicker on that side.
also have an almost purple brown 1974 D lincon cent with what looks like his ear has been re-pressed coming from his chin (what looks like an extension of his chin, 3mm in length)
Also a 2000 lincon cent with no rim also no damage to the coins picture or lettering. Many thanks for your time in advance.

1976 5 cent coin with a very deep D mintmark, the coin is much thicker on that side.
--Normal the mintmark is often repunched because it fades, no extra value.

purple brown 1974 D lincon cent with what looks like his ear has been re-pressed coming from his chin (what looks like an extension of his chin, 3mm in length)
--Purple is just tarnish, no affect in value.
--The other sounds like a die break, no extra value. Although the description is unclear.

2000 lincon cent with no rim also no damage to the coins picture or lettering.
--Possibly damaged but with a grinder leaving the rest of the coin untouched, this is done often for jewelry. No rim cents cannot really be verifiable errors in most cases.

I found a 1943 penny. How much is it really worth? Or should I just hold on to it?

1943 penny about $0.35 if circulated, I would hold on to it since it is too common to sell,

That said if you want to use it as a penny no big loss.

No such thing as a 1969-S Wheat cent it must be a Lincoln Memorial cent.

There are 3 major varieties the most common is about $2.00 the most rare is about $4,500.00 both in fine.

If your coin is poor expect it to be 1/10 of the lowest value listed here...
Rare 1969-S
Common 1969-S

Not an error, since both sides are pressed at the same time it is not possible to have one side smooth. It would at least be warped.

Probably someone try to make jewelry with this, no extra value.

1979 Penny and on the front of the penny beside the head it has a nh and in the shape of a torch or a state around it.

A New Hampshire state penny that was etched by an outside company as a souvenir.

This does not add value instead it lowers the value to just metal value.

Sounds like a 1943P-1DO-001 it is one of 20 possible Doubled Die cents.

It would be about $350.00 with the cud.

That said the cud may indicate it is machine doubling which only adds $20 in value.

As for Coin Shops they never been great in my opinion. Like pawn shops they always offer ridiculously low prices yet they sell at high prices. Look for recommendations on Coin Forums for good shops.

They did not plate coins back in 1903. Weigh it to narrow down the possible error.

The "1" on this penny is not extra material that dropped from somewhere. It is clearly a "1" from every angle. Could you please give me some insight if you are familiar with this error in particular. 1958 wheat penny. The "1" on the year is revered-pointing right instead of left.

Die Break error, these were common among the 1950s cent. It adds no real value.

Die breaks are made at the time of minting and would like a reverse 1.
It is not possible to have a reverse 1 but the top of the number often cracks and looks like a real variety but it's not.

The upside down back is normal.

The coin is misaligned and that looks like a true error. The reason it is misaligned may be that it was made with the wrong metal.

It needs to be weighed with a 0.01 gram scale. It is possible that it is a an Off-Metal error worth hundreds.

Hello There!! I am the same person who asked about the steel penny back in January 6 2014. Anyway I found a 1980 penny about 2 weeks ago and I think it is a cud error. It has this extra metal on the "God We" part and it might be a cud error. I searched all over the internet (Including Ebay and Amazon)to see if anyone knows about this coin or know the value or rarity. I couldn't find anything. I believe this coin might not be well known and possibly being rare. I know usually cud errors have a faded spot and the other side of that has the cud. But this coin doesn't have a faded spot on the other side. I have two of these coins. Found one 2 weeks ago and the other one 1 week ago. They are both identical except the one I found two weeks ago is brown and the one I found 1 week ago is shiny. Please tell me what it is, the rarity, and the value if possible. :) I will try post pictures if I know how to do it. Thank you guys so much!! It will a be big help to me. :)

Very easy to fake or happen accidentally.

It may still weigh 3.11 grams if fake.

a 1962 R repvbblica italiana L100 silver coin

About $0.50 they are stainless steel and over 20 million were made so they are still common and hold little value.

The Lire is no longer used in Italy so even in exchange value there is nothing.

Hello its me again.. And i believe i have found a very unique coin error. This time it is a 1964 penny i believe to be struck with what professionals call a mudslide if im not mistaken on the terminology. Anyhow this particular coin on the backside has the mudslide dripped all through the white house to where it says "one cent" with the e in "cent" noticeably smaller than the rest of the letters. Now what im about to say next i believe is to be the absolutely best part, on the obverse side is "in god we trust" well at the bottom where it is to be left blank it say "in god we trust" upside down as if it were the top and not the bottom. Also around the date there are CUD marks i believe thats the term also. Im anxious to hear your response.. I wish i could post a photo.

Not a real error, this happens when someone squishes two pennies together.

Could be a Struck through Grease error known as Dropped letter but that would have to verified in hand by experts they are generally less than $10.00

People often confuse Machine Double with real doubling or die Breaks with valuable errors. Even real DDO are rarely worth more than a few dollars. I inform them of this.

Congrats that you found so many errors keep up the search you have good eyes.

Probably a D that got filled during a Die Break, generally it does not add value. Some collectors may be interested though.
