1994 Hungary 10 Forint

Have a Hungarian coin and want to know its value? Leave a comment

No finds this weekend despite the fact I made an effort to use only cash. So it is back to the vaults with the last of the H countries. That is right, Hungary land of something and Rubik Cubes.

MAGYAR KOZTARSASAG · 1994 · (THE REPUBLIC OF HUNGARY)
10 FORINT BP. (BP is the Budapest mintmark)
Again this is one of those coins that gives little American-English clues to country of origin. Luckily in the age of Google it is easy to look up. Now before the internet was useful if you did not own a World Coins book you would be lost. Back in those days I would try to look up flags in the World Almanac or even country names, since they were often listed with original spellings. Just trying to match the coin symbols with country symbols is tough.

Here's the stats...
Type/Country: 10 Forint / Hungary
Year: 1994
Mintage: 66,605,005
Metal: Brass
Value: $0.10 in Fine

Do you have a coin from Hungary and want to know its value? Leave a comment/question and I will do my best to find out the price and history for you.

  1. Why do some countries decide not to put the name of their country on their currency?

Not sure sometimes like in Great Britain they use that abbreviated title:
    D G REG F D

d.g.; dei gratia, "by the grace of God"

    Reg; Regina - "queen"

f.d.; fid. def. - "defender of the faith"

Sometimes titles are more important than names.

Sometimes the American names are completely different than the country of origin (Magyar = Hungarian).

  4. Magyar Köztársaság = Republic of Hungary
It is now changed to Magyarország (Hungary) and you can still use the old one too.
