Stars Came Out Tonight

Do you have currency and want to know its value? Leave a comment/question and I will do my best to find out the price and history for you.

I recently got this fresh super crisp star note from my change. This is the nicest looking star note I ever got and made sure not to fold or bend before I got it home.

Now when I looked it up in the book I see it is listed in sheets only, this is wrong. The Uncut Sheet sold by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP) was only for the C-A block. Still this bill is one of the scarcer of the 2003-A $1.00 notes.

This is the second 2003A $1 star note that I found but this one is much more special in grade and rarity.

Here's the stats...
Type/Country: 1 Dollar/United States
Year: 2003A
Date Printed: July 2007
Printings: 320,000
Run: 2nd from C03200001* - C03520000*
Value: $30.00 in CH-CU(choice-uncirculated)

  1. Hi, Happy 4th of July. I have a student that has a $1 bill. Serial # B67432747I, 2003A, the black seal on the left side of the bill is missing with a smug and there is no signature on the right side of the bill above the Secretary of the Treasury. The student took the bill to the bank and they scanned it and told him it was real. The 3 digit # on the back is 102 and the front has B small 3 lrg 2. Could you give me an idea of what it is worth or who could help us. The bill is in used condition but has a pink marker line about 1/2 long to the rite of George's face. Any help would be greatly appreciated. P.S He almost used the bill to pay for a bag of chips. I told him to keep it. Warmest Thanks Slabqueen

  3. Happy 4th to you too. Can't wait for the fireworks tonight.

This may be a Missing Overprint error but the smudge and only one missing signature makes me think someone altered a normal bill.

The black portion of the ink if missing should not make the signature disappear. Were it genuine it would be about $150.00. Without an image it is hard to tell.

The Where's George stamp basically ruins the bill. There is a way to get the ink off but I don't know how.
It is the more common star not than the one I found in my post so it would be about $10.00 but with the stamp it's only $1.50 if unfolded.

This note was stamped by a user named "bank of frank" who is obsessed with Where'sGeorge.com.

  4. Thank you, I will have the student send you a pix/scan. I won't see him till mid next week. Have a wonderful 4th. Warmest Thanx, Slabqueen

  5. neat blog. i have collected wreath pennies with my father for years, as well as the pennies with that small letter designation near the date. it is fun and something we can do together and not fight about (well sometimes...).

what i wanted to ask was, is there any special significance with $20 or $50 bills dating between 1950 and 1969? just found a couple in a stash box of my grandfathers and wondered...

    thanks!

  6. special significance with $20 or $50 bills dating between 1950 and 1969?

If they are in perfect, unfolded, and like new they carry some extra value.
Also star notes have some extra value.
1950-E have a small premium for both $20 and $50.

Besides that none of the bills are special.

  8. what is a star note?

A star note is a replacement note that the government issues when regular notes are damaged.

They are identified by the star * at the end of the serial number.

Since they are printed in less quantities they are generally worth more.

    About $2.00.

Yeah if you decide to keep it may be a decade before the value rises, but if you need to pay for something don't feel bad because it's a common star note.

  13. Hi! I have a strange ten dollar bill. It is from 1950 with what looks like a "B" under the date. I kept it because I never saw a bill that said "Will pay to the bearer on demand" at the bottom. But when my brother was looking at it, he noticed that on the front there is no top border and when you look at it up to a light source you can see that the front and back printings do not line up, as the top border is there on the back but not the front. The serial number is A78415117B. Should I hold onto it?

That's a minor Faulty Alignment error so no extra value the bill in very-fine is about $15.00.

  15. The cashier at a restaurant today told me I gave them a counterfiet $20.00. They marked it with their pen and the mark turned brown. Gave them a different bill, stuffed that one in my wallet and went on my way. When I got home I took a look at the bill. It is a 1950 "c" series. Serial #A54879419A. So I looked up the signatures. Elizabeth Rudel Smith and C Douglas Dillon. From what I could find neither was in office until 1961?? Any opinion??

Counterfeit twenties are common but older bills tend to give false positives with the marker test.

The 1950-C bill was actually first made in February of 1961.
The "C" indicates it was not an original 1950 bill.

    It's about $22.50 in very-fine.

There are counterfeit collectors but they are hard to find. That said I think yours is real.

  17. I have a $1.00 bill series 2003A with serial # E74189780E. It appears that the bill was folded in half so that the Federal Reserve mark appears as a mirror image over the green treasury mark. The number "5" also appears as a mirror image (only the 5 on top). Hard to exlpain, but I can email a picture.

Sounds like a minor ink transfer maybe about $10.00 in very fine.

If the where the Federal Reserve mark should be is blank then it would be worth ten times as much.

You can always upload an image to a free photo site and link it but it's not necessary.

Go to Photobucket or imageshack upload there and then drop a link.

This is called Multiple Printing Error and is about $1,000.00 in extra-fine. It must be confirmed by an expert because this error can easily be faked.

  25. Hi - while clearing out my Mom's belongings I came across a $1 dollar bill from 1995 that looks to be missing some of the ink on the back of the bill. Clearly it was printed that way and the bill although a little creased is very crisp. I don't know how long she had it but she must have stuck it in a drawer thinking it was worth something. I took pictures of it, but I don't know if they can be posted here. I don't have my own URL. If interested I can send the photos. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

This looks more like a Board Break Error rather than a Insufficient Ink Error but either way it's about $100.00. It probably needs to be seen by an expert to get the exact error type.

That's fine if selling in person and ungraded it starts at $40.00 and only graded would give you the maximum value.

In person coin dealers try to get bargains which is why most buyers go to eBay more often.

None really have any extra value and GEM CU is only given when graded by a company if not graded then it is half the value.

I use eBay, forums, coin and currency magazines, and Small-Size US Paper Money by Schwartz & Lindquist.

After a while you start seeing a pattern on which notes are selling well and if the book value is realistic or not.

  87. multiple sheets of (4) $10 2003 DA stars, do you recommend to send to PGGS or just hold as they are in a safe place?

About $150.00 not worth grading since all are near perfect.

Although they were made in low amounts most survived in great shape. Each time a new design comes out the old designs raise in value but $150 is going to be the high for years.

  88. Hello I have a 2006 $1 where the black Fed. Reserve is H. The H appears to have been wet ink or something and is also on and overlapping the green treasury seal. There are 4 8's on the front and each one of them has a slightly offset impression of an 8 next to and over lapping them. The back of the bill is error free. The bill is in fine condition I would guess.

It is not upside down that is an illusion.
The flag is supposed to be waving in the wind but the shadows make it look to some people as if this is an error, but there is no error.

  180. I noticed in the book this prices is for CHCU, if these were Certified by PCGS 65 GEM, would that raise the value of these notes?

CU is usually thought as 63 - 64
    CHCU is 65 - 66
    GEM CU is 67 - 69
    Perfect CU is 70

Now this is subject to change and of course some buyers don't care about the grading at all as long as the bill appeals to them.

All that said PCGS labeling 65 also GEM means in book value you go by the lower claim, it is a 65 not GEM. But at auction it may go higher.

For know $50 but I expect that price to drop fast once the error is sorted out.
