Now I was looking at my long neglected Flickr site and saw a token that I was suppose to follow up on price. The problem is that I can't recall if I posted anything about it. I searched my old post and can't find it so even if this is a repost I will write it up anyway.
The thing with this transportation token that had me thinking twice is that it has several die cracks. Die cracks on tokens are common because they are not held to the same standards as coins. Does this bring a higher value? I'm not sure.
Effective Wednesday, July 9, 2003 all of the duties, obligations and powers of the New Jersey Highway Authority were transferred to the New Jersey Turnpike Authority. Granted this token has not been used in about 25 years.
Tokens are made in less numbers then coins but are often kept by more people since once they are discontinued they can't be used anywhere else. After this at least 3 more tokens were issued for the New Jersey Turnpike.
Also although this one says 1952 I think it may be from the 1980s.

ReplyDeleteI've done an extensive search and while I know it's from the Grand Opening of the Halls Crown Center that's it.
I've never seen this in auction and it is relatively new, only 3 years old.
I'll post in a forum to see if anyone else has seen them.
For now $5 a piece should be a fair value. Until I know how many survived I can't be sure.
I don't see any initials or mint maker. Anything on the edge?
No, there's nothing on the edge. It's completely flat. I've tried doing research too, but that's the only thing I found too.

The item is long gone and I can't track the dealer. The picture of this auction is also gone I only get "Invalid Item" meaning more than 6 months have passed.
I managed to get a reply from Halls, and here's what they said:

ReplyDeleteI checked Franklin Mint records and they did not make this token, they are the largest private coin makers. But their history is not complete.
I wouldn't use it at the mall but if you do at least keep the best one.
Also keep the email for your records because you can always quote it if you sell it in an auction.

I found this token and don't know what it is. Its roughly the size of a nickel. On one side, there is a guy in a turbin and on the back is a castle. it looks like it used to be red. I can get you pictures if you need them.

i found this token metal detecting at a church. on one side, it says will county on top 125th in the middle and anniversary celebration on the bottom.on the back side on top it says will county 125th anniversary cellebration.in the middle it says good for 50c and in smaller print in cash or trade at any participating businesses or bank in will county or joliet ill on or before september 6, 1961. then on the bottom its says sept. 3-9, 1961. thanks

ReplyDeleteI have no info on this token, try contacting Will county officials but these type of tokens generally have a value of $1.00 or less.

Its in a blue case that says presented to members of the franklin mint collections society august 28, 1971. On that side there is a pic of a moon on the coin. On the back, there is This mini coin is made from a special melt containing silver that was carried to the moon on the flight of appollo 14 both on the coin and blu border. then there is a certifivate of authenticity certified august 28, 1971 and signed by william G? Karieg? Thank you for all your help

On the one side, it has a man riding a horse, sword in hand and outstretched in front of him, on the reverse a sheild with stars in the top portion and vertical stripes in the lower portion. Above the shield it reads 'Union For Ever'. The word 'For' is in smaller type, and is oddly seperated from the 'Ever'. I have found other coins which have one or the other side but no other coin which has both of these sides. Can you please provide any assistance.
I am excited that I simply found this in my pocket change as I was standing in line to pay for something at 7-11. Regardless of the value, I would simply like to learn more about the coin.

As for value they are generally only a few dollars and as for history I do not know. Tokens are hard to track hopefully some of this was useful.

Hi. Recently, I went bottle digging in Joliet, IL and found about 40 of these tokens with a broken mason jar. What were these, is there any age to them, what were they from, is there any value to them, etc. I am very clueless and ANY help would be greatly appreciated. What were these, is there any age to them, what were they from, is there any value to them, etc.

It is nearly impossible to identify these since they are still being made. I will keep looking but if from pre-1940s which I think it is it's about $0.50 each even if unidentified.

I think it is real from 1937 a service medal given to volunteers. But I cannot say 100%.
Average is about $15.00 in that condition.

ReplyDeleteThe Sales tax tokens are common less than $1.00 each they are common and not in great shape.
The (Colorado with 180 deg. rotated die.) does not seem to be special, again token varieties are a bit out of my comfort zone.
The Transit token is also common about $1.00 although I think they raised the fare to $2.00 so it is bound to go up in value.
The Olympic medals do not match anything I've seen. Officially noe would have been plated. I think it is a toy or souvenir, sorry but this one is unknown.
