New Zealand

Do you have a New Zealand coin and want to know its value? Leave a comment/question and I will do my best to find out the price and history for you.

I got the lot of foreign coins about a week ago and as promised I'm showing of some interesting pieces. I paid exactly $0.10 per coin and the average value for the coins was $0.34 per coin. Some coins were horrible and full of damage. All the coins have been searched, you should always expect the coins to be searched even if they say unsearched.

I'll start with some New Zealand coins because some one just asked a question about them.

Some things you may not know about New Zealand coins, as of July 31 2006, 10, 20, and 50 cents coins were replaced by new small thin versions and the nickel (5 cents) coin was removed from circulation. These coins are demonetized and no longer accepted in the their native lands.

Obverse above.

Reverse below.
Some coins turned out to be Proof or Proof-like.

Starting from right to left on the top row.

No strap, Near leaf is what you described about $150.00 each.

    silver quarter

Most coins made before 1940 are worth more than face value. Except for the 1953 Canada and the 1914S buffalo the rest are very common.

  4. THANK you... Woah you actually answered this!! ^_^ Thanks!

I also discovered whilst walking along your "canadian coins" blog. You said that the 1953 nickel was worth $1000-1300. Hehe. Now thats a huge price drop! XD

How long did it take you to find all of these?!

    ReplyDelete
  5. 1953 nickel was worth $1000-1300. Hehe. Now thats a huge price drop! XD

Not really, it's the condition. I forgot to mention that I assumed your 1953 was in a low grade of VG-8(very good). Of course if it is XF or above that price range is correct.

It took about twenty minutes to look up your coins in the books. Unless you mentioned a condition I assumed the lowest possible grade.

  6. aah... Well the nickel was in great condition-.. except for the scratches.. *shudders*.. XD well anyways, THANKS!

Note that New Zealand keeps changing it's policy on old coins and they had a big melt down in 2006. It may take years to find out how many older coins are left but this usually means values will increase.

  19. NZ one shilling is 1967, it has the maori face on it like the current 10 cents and says ten at the top and one shilling at the bottom... why?

From what I understand all the shilling stopped in 1967 when NZ switched to decimal.

I now see the problem it is not a shilling but 10 Cents.
The transition years of 1967-1969 have double denominations of 10 Cents and ONE Shilling but officially it's a 10 cent coin. This was done to help people who might get confused by the new money.

    In extra-fine it's about $0.10.

  25. 1937 new zealand crown worth in good nick ive got two and what are the rare dates for new zealand coins or rare coins for new zealand

I don't know of any 1937 crown for New Zealand but other crowns are about $8.00.

The one true rarity is the 1935 crown at $1,500.00 in fine.

Nearly everything after 1967 is just face value.

But before then nearly every Proof coin is worth a lot so are high grades.

    For Example:
    1934 Florin
    In fine it's about $2.50
    In Uncirculated it's $110.00
    In Proof it's $2,000.00

This repeated for nearly every older coin low grade = low value.

It should have the ten dots when issued from the British Royal Mint but a low mintage were made at the Royal Australian Mint that may be different.
Unfortunately I have little info but the book value is the same at $2.00 so I think it's a common variety.

  42. Hi, I have a 1988 New Zealand 20 cent coin with a curved clipped planchet, not too big but noticeable. Any info?

I also have a 1962 Canadian nickel with a small, straight clipped planchet.

A 1971-D American cent with the letter "I" missing in "LIBERTY" (not scratched off), a 1961 American cent that is gold, (yes gold, I know it sounds impossible) all the letters and the date are very bold. Very weird!

Lastly, I have a 1956-D American cent with the letters "L" and "I" missing from "LIBERTY" and the letter "T" missing from "TRUST" (the "T" to the right is missing and again, not scratched off).

I have others but too many to name.

Yeah these are done outside the mint by plating with a thin layer of gold. They have no collectors value but they are sold in some catalogs for $3.95.

    1917 EF
    1926 VG

Also, I had read somewhere that the 1925 nickel was around $75 in VG condition. Was the author mistaken or would I be able to sell it for above $55?

    Thanks again.

  46. Canadian nickels

1899 VF about $35.00 there are some portrait varieties but they average $35
    1912 VF about $5.00
    1917 EF about $3.00
1926 VG there is a near 6 and far 6 variety
    near 6 is about $3.00
    far 6 is about $100.00

Near 6 means the 6 in the date the is almost touching the leaf.
Far 6 has a noticeable gap between the leaf and 6.

1925 nickel was around $75 in VG condition. Was the author mistaken or would I be able to sell it for above $55?

I give the lowest possible average value meaning below $55 is not acceptable.
Above $55 would be great and the market goes up and down on these key pieces, yes I do think you can get.

  47. Hi I have a few coins and was wondering if they were worth anything??
I have the nz 1981 royal visit coin issue,
The nz 1984 coin issue with the chatham island black robin on the $1 coin,
The nz 1986 uncirculated coin issue with the kakapo on the $1 coin,
The nz 1982 $1 coin in plastic case
And the nz 1983 50th anniversary $1 coin in plastic case.
Any help would be much appreciated!!

    ReplyDelete
  48. For all these there are silver and nickel versions. I'll assume nickel and the one in the case to be silver.

nz 1981 royal visit coin issue about $2.00
The nz 1984 coin issue with the chatham island black robin on the $1 coin about $7.00
The nz 1986 uncirculated coin issue with the kakapo on the $1 coin about $3.00
The nz 1982 $1 coin in plastic case about $15.00
And the nz 1983 50th anniversary $1 coin in plastic case about $12.00

  49. Thanks again for all your previous help. I just had a few more coins that I was curious about, probably not the right place to post this but seeing that you have the resources, I might as well ask! Just wondering the value of the following:

    1959 One Shilling AU

    1978 10P EIRE VF

1961 Florion 2s EIRE VF (Irish I'm guessing)

    1855 ? 125 JAHRE
    - Grunder Adam Josef Racke 1827-1913 on the obverse.

I also have a coin that states:

    20 Tunisie Francs

Only arabic writing on the other side. I've managed to translate the date using an arabic number translator - 1303, but the coin is in too good of shape to be that old! Do you have any info on this?

    Thans again, much appreciated.

    1855 ? 125 JAHRE

This is a medal about $1.00

    20 Tunisie Francs

That is the Islamic date 1303 = 1885 as far as I know Tunsia had no 20 Francs in that year it must be older.

    ReplyDelete
  51. What years did they mint "20 Tunisie Francs" coins? Or any Tunisie coins for that matter?? Thanks

  52. What years did they mint "20 Tunisie Francs" coins?
Starting in 1891 it was a French Protectorate which is why they used Francs.

But started putting dates on coins from 1272 = 1855.

First thing to do is weigh it, if it weighs 2.05 grams it is bornze that someone plated with silver, no extra value.

If it is any other weight it maybe an error.

It does seem to be an error but if this is an Australian Mint error it is not listed anywhere.
This off-metal error would start at $50 but it needs to be verified. Which may cost more than $50.

I checked as much as I could, you may want to post some pictures somewhere just to make sure it is not something else.

Anywhere like imageshack or tinypic or photobucket.

Maybe use blogger or flickr or picasa that requires a LOGIN but it is more permanent and you can then drop a link here or to any expert who may request photos.

As for taking a good shot use a macro settings and a tripod.
If not then place the coin under a lamp and get far above the coin and zoom in until the coin fills the frame.
I sometimes use a a lamp with a shade and place my camera on the shade to hold steady shooting through the hole of the shade straight down on the coin.

  173. New Zealand 1 & 2 dollar notes be worth, and what date did they get taken out of currency?

Depends on date but generally about 2 times face value if at least very-fine.

They were replaced in favor of coins that last longer and are cheaper to make.

    ReplyDelete

Scarce about 160,000 were made but other years had less made.

is $950 a relavent price for this coin$ What is BU?.
BU = Brilliant Uncirculated a very high grade, in this grade the value is about $1,000.00 so yes $950 if BU is right. Value van go up or down 15% depending on the market.

--Not sure what you mean. These are abbreviations for coin grades. Very-fine(VF), good (G) every coin is graded differently but with the same grading terms.

If a coin has had a hole put in to it ,how will this alter the price of the coin?
--It will drop the value to only metal value about $12.00

Plated by an outside company, this is considered damage and has no extra value.

If you think it may be a genuine error weigh it, if a fake it should weigh about 4.15 grams.
Any other weight may be a valuable error.

Ok, I have digital scales, but they aren't 100% accurate, as it can't make up it's mind if it's 4.17 or 4.18g, but it's definitely not under 4.16g.
It is intensely shiny - here are a couple of pics I took..they're not great I'm sorry but it might help?

Even at 4.18g that is within the tolerance, each coin can weigh 0.04+/- grams because the process of making coin is not perfect.

Looking at the coin and weight I can safely say it was plated. plating often adds a little weight. Probably silver plated but it has no real value.

  194. Thank you for the info. I've had this sitting in a box for well over 20years, so whoever plated it must have done it a long time ago. I will have it checked along with the rest of my coins one day and find out what the metal is. Thanks again for taking the time to check it out for me :)
