2012 China 5 Jiao

Do you have a Chinese coin and want to know its value? Leave a comment

That is right 2012!

I got this as a penny in my change in the city. It is a rare thing to get such a new coin from so far away, without traveling there of course. The coin is much nicer in hand and the 5 is very noticeable. Not sure why I got it as a single cent maybe because of the color.

The obverse says 中 国 人 民 银 行 which means People's Bank of China 5 WU JIAO 2012. The 5 is security lined like many other coins and the edge also has some security features. The reason is that this is more equivalent to a fifty cent coin than a five cent coin. It is half a Yuan, their standard currency.

The reverse has a lotus blossom and the words ZHONGGUO RENMIN YINHANG which still means People's Bank of China.

Here's the stats for both coins...
Type/Country: 5 Jiao / People's Republic of China
Edge: Reeded and plain sections
Year: 2012
Mintage: Not yet known.
Metal: Brass
Value: $0.75 in XF

This week was great for finds and I still got more to show off. The vaults are closed for a while.

Do you have Asian coins and want to know its value? Leave a comment/question and I will do my best to find out the price and history for you.

  1. You've been hitting it big this week! My pull last week was pretty lucky, but you seem to have been running into quite a few collectible coins!

It's truly rare to find a foreign coin (except for Canadian coins) dated in the current year in your change! Nice finds! I'd like to see the nickels you received!

  3. I received two old Chinese coins from my father-in-law when I got married. I believe them to be Yuan Shi-kai Silver Dollars. He is Chinese and I live in China now so I am quite sure they are authentic. I was wondering if you have any idea as to the value of them? I can send photos if that would help?

Is there any way you can email me and I send you some pictures of them and give me an idea at least where they're from so I can have something to start googling with? Thanks! My contact info is in my profile.
