1973 Honduras 50 Centavos

Do you have a Honduras coin and want to know its value? Leave a comment

The one and only Honduran coin I own. Not sure where I got it. Also not sure why it is the only one I own.

Lempira is the equivalent of Dollar. So 50 Centavos de Lempira is like saying half dollar. Granted the exchange rate, as of today, has it 50 Centavos de Lempira equal to about 5 U.S. Cents.

50 CENTAVOS DE LEMPIRA PRODUZCAMOS MAS ALIMENTOS
REPBULICA DE HONDURAS
PRODUZCAMOS MAS ALIMENTOS means we produce more food. This is a nod to F.A.O. which is the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. Since 1968 they have asked countries to spread the message of better food and farming through coins. F.A.O. coins are very collectible since they are mostly affordable. 600+ coins and medals have been issued including the last Haitian coin I featured two days ago.

Here's the stats...
Type/Country: 50 Centavos De Lempira / Honduras
Year: 1973
Mintage: 4,400,000
Metal: Copper-Nickel
Value: $0.25 in VF

Slight evidence this coin was cleaned. Then again there is evidence that thing coin was covered in something rust-like.

Do you have a Honduran coin and want to know its value? Leave a comment/question and I will do my best to find out the price and history for you.

  3. So FAO coins are collectable?

About a month ago I picked up a steel coin that had "XXI Century * 2000 * Food Security", an elephant in the center, FAO at the bottom. Opposite side a crest framed with what look like leopards. Around it "Shillings * Republic of Somalia * Scellini" with a 5. 5 shillings in other words.

Shiny, a little dinged up but not too bad, but the weight of the coin is low - feels like a game piece.

  4. So FAO coins are collectable?
--Yes, but not necessarily valuable. Plus I personally do not like them much.

--It should be aluminum (non-magnetic if you want to check) that is why it's so light.
    About $0.30 in very-fine.

Yes, I guess the fear of counterfeiting is forcing them to add more security to the larger coins.

I hardly ever get them so not much changing.

Just $0.25, this is considered damaged there is so little low-quality gold that it does not change value.

That said as an art piece they sell for $1.00 or more, but difficult to sell for profit.
