Just a normal dime maybe with a slight railroad rim but that gives it no extra value. It is just the first 2011 dime I found and it was all shiny.

Railroad rim? What's that?
ReplyDeleteThat is when there is an appearance of two edges.
Railroad is a term for partial collar error which gives two levels on the edges of a coin.
But it can also be used to describe the reverse picture I posted look at the top of the dime it look like there is two outer rims.
Railroad rims is not an official term and more like coin slang.
Oh I would say the correct term for what I have is a collar die clash error, which does not sound as pretty.

I have a dime (1983-P) that looks like its thicker than normal and it is very shiny. Also it has a "railroad rim" from about 9 o'clock to 11 o'clock on the back and the letters are a little thicker than normal on the back.

They start at $50 depending on type of error.

Was this to be verified it be $10,000+.
That said it is probably a Missing Clad error on both sides about $400 but it would weigh less?
At this point it needs to verified by a company like PCGS.
It may also be an Improperly Annealed error when a coin is heated too much bring out the copper.
Hello, I recently found a 2012 dime with partial clad layer missing on the front. It is over the '012' of the date as well as the 'D' proof mark. Both can still be clearly read. Any idea if this has any value? I can send photos if necessary.

These really have no extra value unless the entire side is missing the cladding.

ReplyDeleteYa I found a 2011 P Roosevelt Dime that look like copper on the front and the back only half of it looked like copper. I weighed it and it was 2.3 but it is an unreliable scale. From everything I was reading online I figured it was something done to it post mint or it was just dirty. So I got a rag and put a small amount of tarnex on it and wiped the coin for about 3 seconds and when I looked at it it still had a copper tone but it just looked cleaner. If you have ever cleaned a copper penny with tarnex and seen how it immediately looks new but a tiny bit dull that's exactly what the dime now looks like. But if I look at it with a loup it's not a solid copper color it's blotchy. Any thoughts? Thanks

I suspect damage.
Still an expert may need to see it in hand, but since you cleaned it it would lose most of its value.
