Very odd I only received three nickels in my change in the last three days and all are interesting enough to put aside. Two of the nickels are American and pre-1959 while the other is a Canadian nickel. Non are rare or valuable but it is nice to see some more older nickels still out there.
Some thing I noticed regarding nickels is the misspelling of the word. Many Canadians and certain young people who leave comments spell it nickle. As far as know I know there is no country that uses the word nickle. The origin of Canada's nickle spelling probably comes from William Folger Nickle who was a famed Canadian politician. Still Nickle is a proper name while nickel is an element and slang term for three and five cent coins.
Alternately "Nickle has been used in professional writing from around the country" according to Merriam-Webster but this is a variant form used by writers, but they sometimes need poetry to look good and that is the only excuse I would accept.
Off of my high horse and back to the coins.
The last U.S. nickel has some tape or rubber band gunk so I'm thinking of getting some acetone and removing it. I've never used the stuff but I'd like to try while I still have some free time. I will update if I go through with it. Since the coin is not rare or particularly valuable no loss if something goes wrong.Here's the stats...

On pre-1968 U.S. nickels the mintmark is on the reverse on the right of the building.

I tend to use Isopropyl Alcohol myself for cleaning anything "sticky". I think it's known as "de-natured" alcohol over there.

The usual procedure is soak in acetone then rinse with 99% Isopropyl Alcohol, it is called denatured only by the old guys.
ReplyDeleteAnything below 91% is not good for coin luster. Acetone can be very dangerous which why I want to try.

Most of my coins are in GOOD shape & are from a variety of years ranging from the 1940’s to present. The ones I am mainly interested in are the pennies (both CAD. & USA) from the 1940’s & 1950’s. I also have a CAD. Quarter from 1941 & 2 USA Quarters from 1972 & 1973. Are they worth anything?
I also have a coin that looks like, but is a little larger than the CAD penny & it has “NEW PENNY 1” on one side with what looks like a crown with a gate & chains & on the other side is the Queen (just like our CAD. penny) there is no date, or country info. on this though, any ideas?

I have the Red Book by Yeoman which you can get from the library or buy it at a bookstore.
Quarters from the 1940s from any country is worth about $11.00 because of the silver.
Quarter after 1965 are just face value unless perfect and untouched.

This is a British penny made after 1971 it is just about $0.05.

hi, i have a couple of coins that i would like to know if they have any worth. The first is a 1954 jefferson nickel, the nickel looks alot like a copper penny. there is hardly any silver that you can see on the nickel, on the reverse side it is pitted in a few places, like there were bubbles there and they popped or something, i dont know how to put pictures up here but i do have some. please let me know what I need to do next.
ReplyDeleteThe other is a 1975 dime. it is overly shiny to look at, and the "liberty" is not right at all, it looks like the stamp slipped and the w in "in god we trust" is weird, the first leg of the w looks as though it was pushed over or something and there is a slit that goes from those words through the neck of the president. ReplyDeleteThis is a Rotated Reverse Error and there are some famous examples of 1999-P that run from 135-180 degrees. This one would be about $40.00 in about-uncirculated.

ReplyDeleteYes this one is from a proof set, but since it has been circulated it has a value of about $0.30 unless it happened to maintain a perfect unmarked surface then it may go up to $3.00.

By look at the Wheat lines on the back is how to tell grade.
All Wheat lines weak then good.

ReplyDeleteSounds like a Struck Through Grease error or even damage. Both of these bring no extra value.
It also could be a Lamination error which may bring a few extra dollars but as far as I know nothing major.
