I just bought four items from the U.S. mint on Friday and they arrived today, which is great for just $5.95 in shipping fees.
Since I'm on a budget I did not get duplicates and kept it to the cheapest things they sell. Maybe after I buy my books for next semester I'll get more. For now I'm satisfied with this purchase.
First two are these commemorative coins depicting the bald eagle, the symbol of America's strength, freedom, and democracy, lots to carry for one bird. Maybe to much since they almost went extinct. Thanks to every purchase of these coins you will be contributing to the American Eagle Foundation of Tennessee to ensure the majestic animals are forever flying free.

My wife thought the baby eagles were "cute," so we bought the half dollars for our newborn son. I passed on the golds, but bought one each of the silver dollars. I think this is one of the Mint's nicest commemoratives in years.

ReplyDeleteAnd I have high praise for the US Mint too. One of my US friends ordered some coins to be sent to me here in the UK, and they arrived very prompty and very well packed.
Yes to all, the mint improved its quality. The coins are much nicer, less flaws, and faster delivery.
ReplyDeleteOh, I have a bunch of commemoratives, but the one I'm really curious about is a gold medal made by the Franklin Mint for the bicentennial council of the thirteen original states. It's proof, and has never been removed from the original package and is 500/1000 fine gold (so the card says). I can't find ANYTHING about this particular medal. I'm assuming it was minted in 1976. Know anything about it?

ReplyDeleteI do believe it is from 1976, it is not listed in any of my books but it should have an eagle on the front and a wreath thing with 13 stars on the back.
It's 12 karat gold and last I saw it it was at $50 but that is less the gold prices so it's about $83.00 now. I use to know some Franklin Mint collectors but not anymore. So most coin guys would sell for melt value.
Only the 22k(900/1000) or higher are truly collectible.

Proof is mirror-like at about $700.00.
Uncirculated has a satin finish about $1,000.00.
The UNC gold coin is listed at $850 but of course you might get double on eBay especially with current gold prices.
The half dollar is about $45 on it's own.
The dollar is about $80 on it's own.
I would keep the set together

ReplyDeleteMine are all mirror-like shiny, never opened in the plastic case. What should I do to preserve the value of this? I saw that some are graded by a certain agency. Would you recommend pursuing something like that? Thanks!

ReplyDeleteIf it's in the original case then they should be stay there. Keep them in a dry and dark place.
For know they are still common and don't need to be graded to get the best value.
The Proof gold coin is about $600.00.

370,000 proof dollars were minted about $50.00
With a die crack the average $275.00 depending on grade and eye appeal they will go up or down in value.
I would add I do not know how many with die cracks have been certified.

ReplyDeleteAlso never seen this but judging by other Proof Die Cracks it would be about $150.00. Unfortunately the market for these is weak as Die Cracks are appearing on more U.S. Proof coins.
I have a 2005 Marine silver dollar commemorative.It is an error and is marked MS 69 die crack.The crack is easily visible parallel with the Marine on the right's belt and the flag pole.It is in my safe deposit box and I can not remember if it is NGC or ANAS.The only one I can find sold on ebay in June for $950.00.Any help will be greatly appreciated.Best regards,Mike (lighters@iag.net)
