I don't often make post about token because the varieties are tremendous and I don't own any token books. The most popular reference for tokens is the Atwood-Coffee Catalogue but it's hard to find. Not to mention the fact is most tokens are difficult to identify.even with pictures.
That said have a few I will show. Three are transit token and the last is a gambling token.
Luckily they were all American token because I know some stuff about them but foreign tokens can be extremely difficult to evaluate. All of these tokens are obsolete an no longer accepted anywhere.Here are the stats for the tokens...

Hi, I inherited a huge bag of coins. I am not usually a collector of coins, although I recently closed up an Antique Shoppe where I carried just about everything else. Anyhow, this bag is full of everything from tokens from all over the world to casino and astrology coins. I've started cataloging some and have found coins from over 75 countries, mostly dated 1940 to present, with more in the 1970 to 1980 range. I have listed a few auctions on ebay, my seller name is Mandalia6, but I'm not getting much of a response. I'd like to pass these along to some collectors who will appreciate them, what do you suggest? I'm not looking to make it rich on these, as I, myself have various collections (antique linens, glassware, textiles, etc.,) and know the thrill of finding good stuff at a decent price. ReplyDeleteI can buy a bag of 100 world coins at $9.95 from other places so to spend $3.99 + $2.33 s/h for 12 coins is a bit high.
Split the lots into two giant lots and start the auction at $0.01.
Any coin shop would buy them at $0.05 a piece. They would probably reject the tokens.
These days it is much more difficult to make a decent sale on low grade coins because of all the higher end coins every collector wants.

I am searching for a coin, but it was so long ago that I saw it I am t a loss as to what it was. I remember the coin was silver and LARGE, about the size of a donut, maybe +/- a bit. I want to say that there were birds on one side, and/or QEII on the back. My grandmother lost this many years back, and I remember it as a teen. Any ideas as to the coin?

ReplyDeleteThe Queens image makes me think that it is an Isle of Man or Gibraltar coin because they have many unusual and large coins up to 100 mm which is the size of a plate.
The closet thing I know of is the 32 Crowns from Gibraltar which is 85 mm that has two peacocks on the back. It was made for the Japanese Royal Wedding it was 1993. Worth about $800.00.

ReplyDeleteThis is an Italian medal in honor of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh marriage to Queen Elizabeth. The back is some sort of royal marriage book that was signed by both of them.
As far as I know it is not real gold or even plated but in extra-fine condition it is about $15.00. The goldish paint tends to worn off easily making worth much less.

The C35 is not the mint mark but the facility mark and the face plate number.

ReplyDeleteThis is a Pennsylvania token very common about $0.25. There are at least 4 varieties I know of and all are the same value, the year 1934 is an establishment year not an actual date minted.

ReplyDeleteSounds like a California Token probably for the Waldorf Cafe usually from 1910-1930.
They're also some from Idaho and Ohio but like the original post says these things are difficult to pinpoint. Your best bet is trying on a forum especially for tokens or emailing a token society expert.
Unfortunately I'm very limited in this area but from what I hear they are rarely over $4.00.

ReplyDeleteThis sounds like a local drinking token unfortunately without more details or a picture it is impossible to say.
Try posting it on a several coin or token forums or if there is a local coin club in your area then they may help.
Good luck, tokens are very local and often have little value so they are hard to trace.

Weigh yours if it's 3.33 grams it just gold-plated and has no extra value above $2.00.
If it weighs something it may be an error of some sort.

ReplyDeleteThere is a variety that does not have the letters LB next to the axe but it is rare and is easily faked. This one can be worth alot but has not been in an auction for years so the value is not set.

This sounds like some sort of bullion piece made outside the mint.
I can't find any info on it, sorry.

ReplyDeleteI got interested in coins because I started to invest into precious metals and the more coins I bought I found out then I like collecting coins some are amazingly beautiful one of my favorites is a commemorative coin made by the Japanese mint made of silver I will attach it with the photos so you can see it.
p.s the silver peacock is in a case so it looks rough but it is almost flawless

ReplyDeleteCould not tell you since so many types were made. You can try to be more specific but honestly they made normal and silver version of all types.
They generally have only metal value so try taking it to a jeweler.
I have tokens from my grandfather who owned a busline in knoxville TN. He passed away and left these tokens to me. The tokens have a cut out "S" in the middle. They say "SUBURBAN LINES KNOXVILLE" on one side, and "GOOD FOR ONE FARE" on the back. These tokens where ones he had put aside in a large bag and had never been in use. Can anyone tell me how much one of these would be worth? And where would I sell them.

Columbia Tennessee tokens had an S carved, Knoxville usually had a K carved out.
But judging by similar tokens from 1948 they are about $2.00 each.
You may want to find a local dealer or club who has a complete token catalog just to see if it is listed.

About $335.00 again Matte finish is dull all over and has no mirror-like surfaces.
Matte is worth more, about $500, because very few were made but if there are shiny surfaces on the coin it is probably not matte.
He Offered me $1,429 for my Best One
Coin dealers often take 25% to 50% off coin values, they do this for profit.
That said the gold value alone for your best coin is $1,700 so worse comes to worse sell them to a jeweler and get the metal value.

--Some type of ANA medals most are just plated and worth $12.00. But I do not know all the types, you should contact the ANA and ask them about these. I hope they are solid silver and gold but none of my books have them listed.

ReplyDeleteI've never seen the half fare token. Full fare tokens are common at $0.50, they are brass.
These seem to be less common and I am reluctantly putting them at $5.00, if I find more info I'll let you know.
eBay is the best place to sell, maybe a coin forum token collectors often join to find rare pieces.

Still at $0.50 each it is good.
This is the best links I know for transportation tokens, some of them no lnger respond but try emailing each for truly expert opinions.
Sorry, I do not know transit tokens better but good luck I hope they are worth more than $0.50.

When i say i found them, I found them in my basement. The prior owner was from Texas. He must have collected them, they are solid brass from 1945. I saw one sold earlier today on line for $6.70...I don't know if that means anything.

ReplyDeleteYes that is why I estimated $5.00, I suspect the previous owner worked in Austin Transit and may have kept these and most were never released to the public.

ReplyDelete-Yes these things are hardly ever sold and once it is known that a bunch of high grades were found that will change.
You have a few choices...
1) Sell the tokens and bag on eBay, hope for the best.
2) Have the best pieces graded and sell on Heritage, etc.
3) Find a private collector on a forum and sell the lot to them.
4) Sell them a little at a time over the next few years.
#3 is what I would try but #4 probably would get the full value.

I found the silver one to match the gold and they are minted by the royal mint and this is what they had to say. (Having checked our works order records I can confirm that the medals were indeed struck by the Royal Mint on behalf of Miura Japan Co. Ltd.

That is great to find out. You did wonderful research.
As predicted these were privately struck medals.
Although made by an Official Mint these are not coins and still only have metal value.
They may have some extra value as a Diana collectible or a Miura Japan Co. Ltd. but in general 7000 and 10000 are high numbers for medals. Thanks to higher metal values these will always be great pieces.

ReplyDeleteI'm sorry you made such a long list but all of these medals are common and are only worth their current metal value.
These as you may know are Franklin Mint medals and although they had a small mintage they never gained value as collectables.
I have them All ending with No# 24..."Apollo 11" july 1969

Page 1 - Unmanned Flights 12 medals
Page 2 - Manned Flights 12 medals
Page 3 - Flights, November, 1969 to December, 1972 12 medals
Still the 24-set is about $700.00 for metal value alone.
Give or take the current value of silver each medal is about $29-$30. So just multiply the number of medals you have by $30 and that is the value.
I do not buy any coins on this site.
Once again I'm sorry these are not worth more but Franklin Mint silver is not very collectible.

I would just like to say that since I live in the area that these tokens were used, I can confirm that this is indeed a Green Line token. It is the approximate size of a dime and brassy looking. The center "hub" of the coin simply says "Green Line" with the "L" punched out of the center, if you flip the coin over, you will see the Green line logo running off the other leg of the "L". Around the center hub on one side it says, "GOOD FOR" arched across the top and "ONE FARE" arched across the bottom. On the other side, it says, "C. N. & C. RY. CO." arched across the top and the signature of "O. Wondersmith GEN. MGR." arched across the bottom.
I would just like to say that since I live in the area that these tokens were used, I can confirm that this is indeed a Green Line token.

My concern is that "Green Line tokens" also existed in NY, Illnois, Florida, etc. all at different times and currently different values.
The person gave little detail from where it was from and if it had any other markings. Maybe it is the same but maybe it is another type.

There is a 1985 $500 that has 75 Anniversary on it and is silver, it's about $35.00.

I can't find anything on the internet about it other than the mention of it being very rare and given out for just the first two months in 1953.

ReplyDeleteIt should be 16mmm and yes it was introduced for a few months then recalled.
If it is 23mmm the it was the 1986 version that was used for years.
In any case the 1953 solid-Y were made by the millions and in mint condition it's about $4.00, if it was circulated about $1.00.
My wife has a commemorative Delaware Memorial Bridge token in original case minted in 1990 .999 fine silver. We were just curious if you could tell us anything about it as we can't find anything or about it! The front has a picture of the twin span with the date of 1968 and the words delaware memorial bridge along the to curve and worlds longest twin spam on the bottom. The back has nj and de state seals, a side view if the bridge and a side view of a boat and the words delaware river & bay authority along the top, by compact between the states of delaware and new jersey along the bottom with a date of 1962 split on either side. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I have a 1979 Frontier Hotel Las Vegas $1 token and 2 $1 tokens from the Gold Strike Inn Boulder City Nevada. The Gold Strikes are differentstyles-Both feature a gold panner on front and Hoover Dam on back. One has 1935-1985 other has 1935-1987. They are all common but the 1985 was minted with extra quality for the 50th anniversary but by the millions so not that special.
Cincinnati, Ohio Adult transit token. On the one side it pictures two buses and says Cincinnati transit and on the other side it says one adult token.
