Not All Money Are Coins

Do you have a currency note and want to know its value? Leave a comment/question and I will do my best to find out the price and history for you.

I blog of found coins, out-of-pocket or given by family and a few times I've bought coins from the mint or stores. I've found coins from over 50 countries and spanning 100 years also errors and proofs(not meant for circulation), luckily I live somewhere where coins are constantly being rotated and the Federal Mint sends new coins in abundance. All that said numismatics isn't limited to coins.
numismatic
nu·mis·mat·ic (nū'mĭz-măt'ĭk, -mĭs-, nyū'-) pronunciation
adj.
1. Of or relating to coins or currency.
2. Of or relating to numismatics.
[French numismatique, from Late Latin numisma, numismat-, coin, variant of Latin nomisma, from Greek, custom, current coin, from nomizein, to have in use, from nomos, custom.]
nu'mis·mat'i·cal·ly adv.

So what does this all mean well that I've also found currency or bills that are old, rare and in error. Let's start with the most common I've found and what I get asked about the most.
It's a 1 dollar note dated 1935E, the E represents a change in the design of the 1935 bill also the year 1935 may not be when it's issued instead the year the first note was issued until a major design change. The next dollar bill year would be 1957.
Click on the bill for a huge image.
These bills from 1928-1957B are called Silver Certificates because of the the words Silver Certificate on the top and a promise written on them for an equal amount of silver upon the request of the bearer. The silver give back was discontinued in March 1964 for silver dollars and June 1968 of silver bullion.

Click on the bill for a huge image.
The date is located on the front under and left of the blue seal. These are small size notes, the same size as current notes, and are the most common old notes found in the United States.

The back is almost the same as current notes.

Here's the stats for a 1935E 1 dollar bill...
Year: Series 1935E Blue Seal
Notes Printed: 5,134,056,000
Signatures: Priest-Humphrey
Value: Very Fine=$3.00 Crisp-Uncirculated=$7.50
--(The example above is a Good example at most and may be $1.25-$2.50)

  3. Man,
Not sure if I'm doing this right but I was researching some money that I found since my father passed. I have no clue why he has all of this. One of the things is 4 uncut 1$ bills from 1995. To me they don't seem special. Serial#'s A99208789B
    A99233789B
    A99258789B
    A99283789B
Any light you can shed on this would be appreciated. This is the beginning of all his money stash. I even have a bag of 50 pennies????

These are sold by the government for collectors. Those you listed would sell for about $15.00.
    They are slightly special.

I have the same in $2.00 bills I bought a few years ago.

As for pennies unless they're from 1933 or earlier they are only worth a few cents in good condition.

Of course the better the condition the more it's worth.

  5. Hi. Happened across you blog while trying to find out something about this bill. The upper-left corner has a triangular piece that is actually part of the bill.

What would a defect like this be called. Any idea as to its worth? Thanks in advance for any info.

    Great bill.
This is a "Cutting Error" it's a minor cutting error but has a centering mark and it's in great condition.
    It's about $200.00 possibly more.

  7. Thanks so much for your quick reply. It prompted me to check on eBay for something similar. I learned they have a category for "Paper money:US > Errors" and found this bill which went for only $33.99. (The link to the ended auction is here, but being it is a completed item you'll have to sign in to see it.)

If and when I do put it up for sale I'll be sure to let you know how I made out. Thanks again for the info ... you da' "Man!"

    Cheers.

  8. A quick point of that auction.
That $5 dollar bill was damaged, the cutting error was not sharp, it had been torn, and wrinkled.

It would grade good or less which is far from crisp-uncirculated.

This is not a coin it is probably a silver round but I don't recognize the maker. In that poor condition it doesn't matter who made the round it just has the current metal value.

I'm also suspicious of the metal it doesn't look silver, but that could just be the image.

  33. 12, sequential, crisp, uncirculated dollar bills with the word " Hawaii" printed on the bills. What were these bills used for, and what is their worth?

They were issued during WWII in case Hawaii was lost to Japan then they could not be copied or used by the enemy.

No other US currency was allowed on Hawaii except for these special notes until the war was over.

They start at about $30.00 but it depends a lot on serial numbers.

    thanks for your help

  51. do i just give you the serial numbers?
--No I need the date for each serial number like 1963 or 1963A. Just add the date before each serial number listed.

also, what is the number/letter combo after serial number? like B2, L12, 12H8, 3, etc?
--That is the plate position. The plates made to print money go in a certain order this way the can print 12-18 bills at a time. The letter/numbers are needed to track each plate.

If you mean the $5 1934A K40218736A that is not possible can you describe the seal color and recheck the serial number.

the other three are almost sequential and three of the 20's are. does that also make a difference?
--No unless they are near perfect, never folded, like new.

    ReplyDelete
  56. The $5 is a 1934A and the serial number is K40218736A. The serial numbers and a 5 are in blue and the seal is yellow.

The other 1934A is L50418272B and is the one that says Hawaii on it. The seal color and serial numbers are brown.

The three sequential 20 dollar bills do no have a crease in them and look new

oh and some of the bills say silver certificate on them and some say will pay to the bearer on demand. does that make a difference too

  61. interesting. and does it matter if the seal is red or blue on different bills? also, some say united state federal reserve system instead of a letter and bank of - seal with a letter in the middle?

Not really, serail number and bills should identify the note and the value.

Only in a few cases like the 1934-A $5 bills does the serial numbers over lap.

What does matter in rare cases is the front and back number.
For your $5 1934A K40218736A if it has a Front Plate number of 307 it is $100.00 instead of $80.00.

    It gets complicated.

    ReplyDelete
  62. what is a front plate number? the only other number i can see on the front says j1410. the only other number on the back says 1267

  75. Not sure if you got my last post, sorry, I'll try again. I have a 1935F W51210550I silver certificate, slightly circulated, still crisp, autographed by Jerry Lewis, 7/13/59, Vancouver Canada. Would you possibly know the value?

About $4.00 for the bill but if the autograph is real it may be more.

I do not know autographs so I can estimate value.

  77. thank you! I will do some more investigating but I am sure that the autograph is authentic.

    If 100% Offset then it's about $75.00

  80. Thanks man... What would be 100% offset?

    ReplyDelete
  81. What would be 100% offset?

It means the 100% of the front design can clearly be seen on the back.

It is possible that only 50% or half of the front gets transferred. Most common is less than 10% when just a corner of the front is seen on the back. These are worth less.

Search eBay for "offset transfer" and you'll see some nice examples, although they are a bit overpriced.

None have any extra value, the serial numbers do not really matter expect for the 1974.

Some 1974 with F-A serial numbers have extra value aside from this small set the rest are just face value.

    ReplyDelete
  93. Awesome/thanks for getting back so fast - and no such luck then, the only F-A I have in the set is a $20 1963 A.

Does'nae matter though, it's been interesting looking into all this and finding out about the different designs and variations and stuff - I'm sure I'll be keeping an eye out for old notes and star serials and such while I'm over there (actually packing my bags as we speak for a work trip), and spend them newest-first just for fun - regardless of value it's kind of cool having a nearly 50 year old banknote/I'll probably keep at least that one as just a nice thing to have :)

Also I'm sure it's well known in these circles but for those just passing through I thought this was pretty neat/hope I see one some time: http://www.wheresgeorge.com/

Agreed, keeping the oldest or the highest quality is the best idea.
