There are no 1975 United States quarters because of this commemorative piece.
Years in planning the U.S.A. bicentennial celebrations was a big deal. Even recently there were fire hydrants around my area still painted red, white, and blue for the occasion. In 1973 the mint announced that the quarter, half dollar, and dollar coins will be designed by citizen artists via a $5,000 contest. Eventually three designs were chosen and plans to cancel the same three 1975 coins, make silver versions, and issue a new two dollar bill became reality.
Victory torch encircled by 13 stars and a colonial drummer along with the typical mandated writing. JLA under the left arm are the initials of Jack L. Ahr the winning designer, not Justice League of America. |
Normal obverse except for the dual date of 1776-1976. |
This quarter was meant to be issued over a two year period with more than 800 million issued. So unfortunately these are not rare and even in high grade they are very common and worth very little.
Here's the stats...

Year: 1976
Mintage: 809,784,016
Metal: 91.67% Copper 8.33% Nickel

I am confused. Are there rare mint marks for 1976 quarters? Denver, San Francisco, Philadelphia? Is there a rarity and value for certain ones?
ReplyDeleteAre there rare mint marks for 1976 quarters?
ReplyDelete--No.
Denver, San Francisco, Philadelphia?
-Denver over 860 million minted
-Philadelphia over 800 million minted
-San Francisco over 7 million minted
Is there a rarity and value for certain ones?
--Not rarity but certain premium values.
All San Francisco minted coins were sold to collectors directly and are worth more if still in high grade.
Some San Francisco quarters were made with 40% silver, it is still common but has silver value which unfortunately now is kind of low.
For $30 dollars or less you can get the 3 copper-clad quarters and 2 silver quarters all in a high grade.

how much do you think it is worth
Looks legit, the edge and double dent on either side does suggest end of strip error. Of course you must have this certified to get full value.
It has significant wear so grade is low and I'm being conservative so about $200.00 in a proper auction likely 2 to 3 times.

Thanks for the response, Any suggestions as who you would trust to send the coin to and estimate of how much you think a cert of it would cost?

ReplyDeleteNGC is about $45 plus other fees.
PCGS is about $60 plus other fees.
The only downside is that if they are not 100% sure it's an error you lose the submission fee.
The other route is going to coin shows or dealers and getting multiple appraisals in hand.
I have 14 drummer boys with no mint mark and 19 with a D mint mark. What are they worth? Also do you recommend any good sites to get values?
