Older is Better

Do you have a coin and want to know its value? Leave a comment/question and I will do my best to find out the price and history for you.

Yes I have found old coins in my change and new foreign coins but these truly older coins are nearly impossible to find unless you buy them or dig them up while metal detecting.

From top to bottom left then bottom right; 2004 Canadian penny, 1907 US penny, 1914D dime, 1854 quarter, and 1914S dime.

Here are the stats...

Type/Country: 10 Cents/United States of America
Year: 1914S
Mintage: 2,100,000
Metal: 90% silver, 10% copper
Value: $3.00 in G-4

As you can tell even worn and dirty older coins have more value while the newer ones are not worth as much initially. Granted 50 years from now maybe that Canadian will be a collectors item it is also a safe bet that the older US coins will still retain a premium value.

Still none of these will pay your rent.

Do you have a coin and want to know its value? Leave a comment/question and I will do my best to find out the price and history for you.

It is $35.00 in mint which is defined by having no trace of wear and only light blemishes.

  4. HI! I have five $2.00 bills, all new, in consecutive numbers. Series 1976. All have a U.S. 13 cent Postal Service Commercial Aviation postage stamp on each bill in the upper right hand corner. The bills are all post marked with the date April 13, 1976 noting the post office where they were obtained.

  5. five $2.00 bills with dated stamps

These are common and worth only $2.00-$2.50 each.

If they were not stamped they would have a value of $6.00 or more depending on the serial number.

  16. 6 consecutive $10 bills 1995 series C, in excellent condition! Is it worth more than $60?

Not really, it maybe 35 years before those bills can fetch a premium. That said some collectors get them certified at PCGS.com for about $30 they will give it a grade from 1-70. A high grade note will sell for more.

14 dimes would make 1 ounce of silver.

1982, although in the middle of 1982 they were changed to copper-plated zinc. So from 1981 or earlier they are guaranteed copper(except 1943).

  21. I have pockets full of Canadian coins. It is funny to think that they are worth more in your country than in their native home land.
But then again (as my father-in law always says) 'there's nothing stranger than people"

    ReplyDelete
  22. Yes Jackie we are strange.
I've personally gone through hundreds of Canadian cents just to find one in mint condition that goes for $0.50.

Canadian mints make great coins plus they make colorized coins. Those sell for 5 times face value over here.

If you ever sell your pocket change on eBay I probably would by it for three times face value.

1943 cents are Zinc-Coated Steel and the color should be gray but they often get very ugly. Only if it was copper would it be rare.

Here is some advice for you and others who collect coins for charity:

    1. Find a coin shop or collector in your area that will buy them from you at 3 times face.

    2. Join a coin forum and make a deal with them.

    3. Hold an auction after the collection and just sell the entire bag of old coins to the highest bidder.

    4. Do number 3 on eBay.

    1 - ONE FIFTH CENT SERIES A-35
    COLORADO SALES TAX.

1 - PUBLIC WELFARE TAX TOKEN
    LOUISIANA

    1 - CONSUMER'S TAX TOKEN OKLAHOMA
    FOR OLD AGE ASSISTANCE

The last token I have does not have a hole in the middle. The front has picture of a cactus and reads "Arizona State Tax Commission"
The back reads, "TO MAKE CHANGE FOR CORRECT SALES TAX." In the middle the is a number 5.

    Any information is appreciated.

  64. 1941 Australian sixpence about $1.25 it is silver.

1945 Australian half penny about $0.75 it is bronze.

These tax tokens were issued from 1921-1939 in only twelve states to deal with odd sales tax.
Most were made in Aluminum and are fairly common.

    ONE FIFTH CENT SERIES A-35
    COLORADO SALES TAX
    About $1.00

    PUBLIC WELFARE TAX TOKEN
    LOUISIANA...
There are 2 versions made in 1936-1939
1 mil of which 49,000,000 were minted.
5 mil of which 8,000,000 were minted.
Only 7 million were cashed in by 1941 so the rest are in circulation making there value about $0.50.

    CONSUMER'S TAX TOKEN OKLAHOMA
    FOR OLD AGE ASSISTANCE
    About $1.00.

    "Arizona State Tax Commission"
"TO MAKE CHANGE FOR CORRECT SALES TAX." number 5.
This one should be copper and is worth about $1.00.

Because each town in each state made there own sales tax tokens some varieties exist. A token collecting club in your area might pay for rare ones but the ones you listed are pretty common.

Still they are great tokens from the great depression. Very historical.

    ReplyDelete
  66. 1945 50 cent in mint

    It would be about $35.00.

If it's in almost mint condition it would be about $12.00 this would have more wear around the knee and head.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Does it make any difference that Liberty is kneeling? I think someone told her that it made it more valuable. Thanks for you help.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Im sorry sir, I think what she is referring to is an 1845 Liberty because she is sitting and a person could think she was kneeling. Does that make more sense. I think she told me the wrong date.

    ReplyDelete
  69. The 1945 Liberty half has a woman walking with the knees bent as she were in motion.

The 1845 Liberty half has a woman seated knees bent visible through her dress, she is next to a shield.

The mintmark for the 1845 is located below the eagle on the reverse.

1845 no mintmark is about $900.00 in mint.

1845-O is about $675.00 in mint.

1845-O no drapery directly below her left elbow is about $1250.00 in mint.

Of course prices drop to 1/3 listed if it is less than mint state.

    About $3.00 in good

1 dollar silver coin from 1921
This is a Morgan dollar worth about $17.00.

1925 and the girl has a pointy crown and the eagles wings aren't open
This is a Peace dollar worth about $12.00.

1 dollar bill from 1935 with blue seal its serial code is Q96608509B
It should be a 1935-A worth about $3.00

    whats a star note?
It is a note that has a star * in place of a letter in the serial number. They are made as replacement notes when the government prints bills and some are accidentally misprinted or damaged.
Instead of replacing the exact same notes they just issue star notes when they are needed.

Mintmarks for the Morgan are located under the wreath either blank, D, or S.

Mintmarks for the Peace are located under the word ONE either blank or S.

Any mintmark for these two coins would add about $5.00 to the price listed.

    ReplyDelete
  92. Dimes from 1937 to 1945.
    6 S mintmarks,6 D mintmarks,12 blank ones

For Mercury dimes not so much in lower grades. The would be sold at about $1.25 regardless of mintmark in fine grades.

As you reach mint-state-65(near perfect) the difference is usually $5-$10 more if they have a mintmark.

For most US coins the S mintmark is worth the most, followed by D and then blank or P.

Of course there other mintmarks throughout the years like CC, O, W, and C but those are for older coin or non-circulating types.

  96. Depends on grade but as a group $32.00.

Again depends on the coin but $1.25 should be fine.

Also it depends where your selling them.

A dealer will take only $0.80 for each no matter what.
Ebay you should start at $0.01 assuming you have a good history.

Your coins are very difficult to identify because they are older then what I usually collect, also the ones you mention have very valuable varieties.

Try a coin forum PCGS has a good one they can either help you directly or find an honest dealer in your area.

Most books will be useless for your tokens. So try a good library.

10)1/2 franc 1976 I'll assume it is French about $0.15

Get some coin books I've posted about a few if you want to see which would be best.
Consider getting a real cheap and older World Coin book if the kids like it then investing in a newer one.

Some website have good info but better is a coin forum and they usually are respectful and accept Young Numismatic(kid collectors).

You are bound to stumble upon medals, tokens and other items that won't be found in many books or websites. A coin forum is a good place to post pictures for help.

Also never clean the coins. They may not be valuable but cleaning them makes them worthless.

By the way your description were great.

  125. For coins like these it is fine to keep them in an envelope.
They sell little cardboard coin holders called 2x2" Cardboard Coin Holders for 100 it is about $6.00. You can write on them and label them.

Cardboard boxes, tins or jars are fine for lower value coins. A felt lined box is also fine.

Avoid plastic, glass, wood and anything that contains PVC. High humidity is also bad.

If you keep them in a tin or other box in long-time storage just check every few months. Toning is not that bad but if green(verdigris) starts growing quickly change containers and separate the affected coins.

Your silver may turn black after a few years but that's fine, those little silica packages found in shoe boxes will help control humidity.

This is the 125th Anniversary of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police coin. The $310 is not a buy back but just a guarantee that this coin was worth that amount by the end of 2000. In case gold prices fell for the true millennium.

Only 12,913 were sold which is low, I guess no one feared the Y2K bug.It came with a black card folder.

At the time it was $100 (100 Pesos) but this coin has been discontinued and is now not legal tender. So you can not use it in Mexico.

Any Mexican coin after 1992 is legal all others are now just collectors items.

This one has a value of about $0.30 in very-fine condition.

This coins is from Italy, it's a 50 Lire coin which is no longer used because of the Euro.
The obverse is the head of Italia.
The reverse has the god Vulcan standing at an anvil forging some metal object.

In 1974 63,000,000 coins were made so they're not rare.

It is stainless-steel and worth about $0.10 in fine condition.

There are a few that are worth more then a dollar, most are not.

Any denomination over 1 peso is worth a second look.

Also if the coin is uncirculated, with luster and sharp details it will be worth more.

It should be safe to water clean and dab dry with a fine cloth, no rubbing.

If graded it would read Environmental Damage and lose value but I'll guess it as fine it's about $20.00 probably less if it has pits.

  192. Oklahoma 1 mil consumer tax tokens...Can you tell me for sure when they changed over and also when the entire mil system was discontinued?

They were first issued on January 1, 1936 and were discontinued on September 30, 1961.

Know pinning down the change over date is hard I think it was March 31, 1941. There were 19 different tax tokens and I'm not sure if some were changed first or was it all at once.

Since both fiber and cardboard examples exist I don't know when the issued.

  195. I have an unusual penny, most likely a fake. Years (20) ago, I worked at a fast food place to be near my father (Alzheimer's). A gentleman came in and gave me a silver colored penny. I took it to a store in town who told me silver pennies weren't made in the year stamped on it. I have since discovered that in 1974, the stamped year, there were several aluminum pennies made that were not put into circulation. While I highly doubt this is one of them, still, for my own curiosity, I would like to test to see what it is made of to be sure. I get differing weights on websites, but it does correspond to the weight on at least one of them. However, not being a chemist, I cannot tell if it is real. And since the Secret Service is likely to confiscate it if it indeed is authentic, I would like to do this on my own. I really don't need men in suits with sunglasses showing up at my door if there really isn't a cause for it. Have any ideas?

    ReplyDelete
  196. 1974, the stamped year, there were several aluminum pennies made that were not put into circulation.

Here is a picture of a genuine Aluminum cent Al Cent

Yes the secret service will pay you a visit but it is also true that this coin has been faked a lot.

I know they should weigh 0.93 grams. It is rumored that some people working at Alcoa had a few of the missing coins.

Another possibility is that yours is a off-metal error it could be from a silver dime or an aluminum cent from a different country.

Sri Lanka is the most likely suspect since the U.S. made coins for them at 1.02 grams of Al.

Either way only 2 exist one from the Toven family and another from the Smithsonian. The SS did investigate the Toven coin but have not confiscated it.

Any test to prove the metal content must be done by a professional and only ICG can do this.

    The key are as follow...
    Weight
    Diameter
    Metal Content
    Microscopic metal image analysis

Access to a lab would be great.
