On the reverse is a design that looks a lot a 5 Euro Cent coin they have diagonal lines, a globe, stars, and a large 5.
Brazil like many third world countries tend to copy currency designs of more powerful countries or systems. First they copied Britain or Spain, then they copied American designs, and now they are firmly copying Euro designs. It is a way to seem more stable or make believe they are part of a stronger currency group.
The front has Joaquim Jose da Silva Xavier or as he is known TIRADENTES. With the dove and geometric symbols behind him he looks like Jesus but he is not. Instead Tiradentes was a revolutionary leader who helped Brazil gain independence from Portugal.
Here's the stats...

Hello! Congrats for your blog. Very helpful information! Just wanted to share with you the information that the current designs on Brazilian coins have been around 1998. Euro coins are around since 2002. Check en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brazilian_real#Coins

ReplyDeleteThanks.
The Euro actually has been around since 1999 and the designs were around since 1996.
The final design was approved in May of 1997.
Brazilian designers were "inspired" by these designs.

Hi, my name is Alan and I like your blog. I found it while searching for information of one dollar bills 1988. I'm from Brazil and I will start collecting coins. I decided to talk to you because we can exchange currencies. If you want, of course =). Can I send coins of 1, 5, 10, 25, 50 cents and 1 real. And in return you also send me coins of your country. I had this idea now. I don't know if someone already does this but it looks interesting. If it were possible to create a group to trade currencies with people from other countries (Canada, Spain, South Africa, Japan, China, etc ...) would be pretty cool because each would have different currencies simply by sending currency of their country by mail. What do you think? One of the rules could be: no sales, only exchange coins to increase your own collection.
ReplyDelete* I'm still learning english :) sorry any error.
