1993 Panama 1/4 Balboa

Have a coin from Panama and want to know its value? Leave a comment

Basically a quarter, the Balboa is the official currency and everything is a fraction of it. So Un Cuatro is the same as One Forth. I have found several in my change and there is a rumor that they were able to fool certain vending machines back in the day. Of course I never tested this but now that is gone since machines are much more sophisticated.

On the obverse is the National Coat of Arms under the REPVPLICA - DE - PANAMA along with nine stars and wreath around the 1993 date,

The reverse has VN CVARTO DE BALBOA and the armored bust of Balboa. Notice they used the old fashioned V for U. This is a style choice and not a mistake or error.

Here's the stats...
Type/Country: Un Cuarto de Balboa  / Panama
Year: 1993
Mintage: 4,000,000
Metal: Copper-Nickel Clad Copper
Value: $0.25 in Very-Fine

Do you have a Panamanian coin and want to know its value? Leave a comment/question and I will do my best to find out the price and history for you.

  1. I found one of these 6-7 years ago. Sadly, I don't have any idea where it is now. Anyway could you tell me what these coins are worth?: http://img32.imageshack.us/slideshow/webplayer.php?id=p004e.jpg Thanks a bunch for these and for the future ones! (read my blog tomorrow and you'll see)

  3. I believe you can still use these in vending machines. They are minted on US quarter planchets, so they have the exact same composition. The coin has the same value as the American counterpart, so I don't think these are widely used to fool people. My bank's coin machine is very sophisticated, but yet, when I bought the $1000 dime bag, it had a Panamanian 1/10 balboa in wonderful condition.

Great info, still just 1 in a $1,000 bag back in the 1990s it would have been a dozen.

  5. Vending machine? Haha possibly. I may have accidentally spent it I can't remember. The German 1 Euro Cent is a 2008 if that changes the value any. Also where you said 1998 Guyana Cent you meant 1988 right? Do they have the same value too?

    -No change in value.

Also where you said 1998 Guyana Cent you meant 1988 right?
-Yes I meant to say 1988 so it should be.
    1988 Guyana Cent about $0.50
Yes 1988 was a scarce year only 80,000 were made. It is a key date although pretty easy to find in high grade.

  7. Pretty cool! I got a key date for free! Too bad it isn't like an American key date worth hundreds of dollars. Maybe someday...

  14. You can use a currency exchange app or website. Basically 1 Balboa = 1 US Dollar, the Dollar is used in Panamá as well as the Balboa, that is why their coins are similar to US coins in size, weight and materials. A Panamanian centavo is worth 1 cent, real= 5¢, etc. etc. etc. There may have been some fluxuation in the market a few year ago but as of today B1-$1
