1951 Canada Cent

Do you have Canadian cent and want to know its value? Leave a comment

First find of 2011 back on January 25 was yet another Canadian cent. Five of the past six years my first coin find has been a cent from Canada.

This coin is not particularly special but it does has have King George on it which seems to confuse many young Canadians. I have received dozens of questions about the legitimacy of these coins. About twenty hours ago I got this question...
I have a 1952 penny with GEORGIVS VI DEI GRATIA REX on it instead of the queen is it worth anything?
 I responded...
 About $0.05

The way the question (and similar) is phrased is more about where is my Queen and who was this King. Well kids he was the Queen's daddy and royal lineage dictates that when royalty dies the next in line for the throne gets replaced on coins as soon as possible. King George died February 6, 1952 and the Queen did not start appearing on coins until 1953.

Here's the stats...

Type/Country: 1 Cent / Canada
Year: 1951
Mintage: 80,430,379
Metal: 98% Copper, 0.5% Tin, 1.5% Zinc
Value: $0.05 in Good (although this has some verdigris damage)

Do you have a cent from Canada and want to know its value? Leave a comment/question and I will do my best to find out the price and history for you.

  14. With the talk about Canada not continuing to use the penny, what does that mean for all of the ones that are sitting in jars in peoples homes? Will they go up in value?

My father used to wrap CDN pennies by year. I have multiple sets of wrapped pennies from 1951 - 1989. Is there any reason to hold onto them or should I simply take them to the bank?

    Thank you for your reply.

  17. With the talk about Canada not continuing to use the penny, what does that mean for all of the ones that are sitting in jars in peoples homes? Will they go up in value?
-Yes but not by much they will go up by $0.05 to $0.10. Since so many are circulating they will never become rare.

wrap CDN pennies by year. I have multiple sets of wrapped pennies from 1951 - 1989. Is there any reason to hold onto them or should I simply take them to the bank?
-If your a good eBay seller or seller in general then try that. Current with copper values and talks of cents all over being discontinued each cent has higher than face value.
In a year or two it will go higher.

How do you properly clean circulated coins to bring them back to their original colour?
    You should not.
All value is lost when cleaning.
If you don't care about value try getting pure acetone (not nail polish remover) and dip them then rinse with distilled water. Pat dry.

If you really don't care then polish with cleaners available for jewelers.

  18. I found this coin with "GEORGIVS V DEI GRA: REX ET IND: IMP: on one side, and GEORGIS VI D: G: REX ET IND: IMP: on the other side, 1 KING GEORGES profile on each side (V AND VI)" looks to me like a nickle, but it doen't say, neither if it's a nikle (5 CENTS) nor the year it have been stamped. Wich country is it from, Canada or India and what is it the value? It is not in a perfect mint condition.

  19. "GEORGIVS V DEI GRA: REX ET IND: IMP: on one side, and GEORGIS VI D: G: REX ET IND: IMP: on the other side, 1 KING GEORGES profile on each side (V AND VI)"

As far as I know it is not possible.
Sounds like a magician's coin, no extra value.

The only other thing I suggest is taking a picture of both sides and post it somewhere and link it here just in case it is something else.

--About $0.05 although there is a rare variety that has medal alignment that is $10.00
    --Ebay Definition:
    Medal Alignment
If you were to place a coin on a flat surface balanced on its edge so that the designs on both sides were the same way round, this is known as medal alignment. Medals are often worn suspended by a swivel at the top, so that they can be turned about their vertical axis.

    British 1921 sixpence (AG-3) about $2.00
    1938 deutfches reich 5 phennig (F-12) about $0.50
