1948 Canada Cent (Var. 2)

Do you have Canadian cent and want to know its value? Leave a comment

Finally a Canadian cent with a little more of a story. Varieties among Canadian cents often involves the denticles. Although Firefox's spellchecker thinks denticles is not a real word it is a numismatic term. It refers to the tooth-like design elements that you see in on the inside if rim of  certain coins. They kind of look like fence posts to me but they already have a name so I will not change it.

Denticles are very small and are often overlooked. They are a part of the original design and should always be in the same place relative to the entire design. When they are not it is because the design of coin was slightly modified and that is a variety, sometimes due to low and high relief changes, sometimes due to changing the master die or matrix.

That is what happened with this coin it has three varieties all involving the denticles.

Sure it looks like any other old Canadian cent with King Geroge VI on front and the maple leafs on the back. Plus there is a quit a bit of verdigris all over the coin.

What to look for in this year, and maybe in every other, is the size of denticles and where the last A in GRATIA points.

Just because I am familiar with denticle size I know these are the large variety, but if they were small they would look more like spikes then teeth.

Then the A. It should either point to a denticle or point in between one. This is where photo software can help. After blowing up the image you can then draw a straight line from the center of the A and not strain your eyes to see where it points.

Yup, turns out mine is the least valuable the 1948 "A" points to large denticle, this is the second listed I call it Variety 2.

Variety 1 is the "A" points to small denticle. Worth the most, five times normal.
Variety 3 is the "A" points between large denticle. Worth slightly more than Var. 2.

Type/Country: 1 Cent / Canada
Year: 1948 Var. 2
Mintage: 25,767,779 includes all varieties
Metal: 98% Copper, 0.5% Tin, 1.5% Zinc
Value: $0.05 in G

Have not discovered anything new this year, still going through December finds.

Do you have a cent from Canada and want to know its value? Leave a comment/question and I will do my best to find out the price and history for you.

Read it on your site but I do not like being in front of cameras. Half of the criteria is to energetic and I can only fake it for a little while.

  6. I got a question on a Buffalo Nickel I picked up recently 1936 S. I got it for $2 and I'm wondering if I got a good deal. It was marked Fine but on closer inspection I found that part of the horn (the base not the point) is still visible and it could appear to be VF. Any thoughts?

    If fine about $1.75
    If very-fine about $2.00

  8. Hey Man, I was wondering if you've seen some of the commercials for the 2010 Gold $50 Buffalo Nickel on sale for just $10. No I'm not a bot, but I wasn't sure if this thing was legitimate or if it just wanted my credit card number because that seems like an outrageous deal with the price gold is currently at. Any ideas?

  9. More specifically, this exact commercial

  10. copy of the 2010 $50 Buffalo Gold Clad Tribute Proof in 31 mg of pure gold.

This is a fake made at a private mint, it has about $1.36 worth of gold, probably less, plated on some cheap metal.

Full metal value is probably $2.00.
Stay away unless you want a fake or art piece.

  11. Give me a break. Do you watch the show? The contestants are nowhere near energetic. However, I could see this being the case on Wheel of Fortune or something. I feel you on the camera thing, though.

No but I get it, you are not the first person to suggest it.
Maybe one day, I'd love to face that computer.

If you want to post pictures somewhere and drop a link that is fine.

If you meant U.S. Wheat cents they ended in 1958 not 1967.

    Assuming good grade...
1958-1967 are just about $0.03 each.
Unless you have a 1924-D or 1931-S then the rest are about $0.20 each give or take $0.75.

  19. I have a Canada cent from 1951, george on the back. I wouldn't think twice about it except that it's gold on the outside, and by what appears to be a burn test mark, silver on the inside. Any ideas?

Sounds plated, often to plate coins they use 6 or 7 layers of silver, gold, copper, and nickel. This is normal for plated coins and the test prove it was not solid gold or even well plated.

    No extra value.

  21. I have quite a few Canadian Pennies ranging in years 1901 - 1917. I know they aren't in mint condition but I can still read all information on them and am curious of they're value. Most have King George on them but do have a couple with Victoria.

1936 F.buffalo nickel about $1.00 but F is just the designers initial the real mintmark is on the reverse below the E and C in FIVE CENTS.

If nothing is there that means Philly mint.

If there are no folds and it is crisp then about $200.00

If there are folds but but still has crispness about $75.00

Anything more than 3 folds just face value.

  35. Hi, I have a 1948 Canadian Copper Penny, although it’s thiner then a normal penny, kind of like a dime as far as thickness goes. the word Canada doesn’t look right, almost looks distorted. The 1 CENT also looks odd too. I can barely see the letters and face of Georgia’s VI etc, the maple leafs and the year look okay though, I can see them. Anyways it’s a strange looking one, and very light with barely any thickness to it. Any idea of what could have happened to it? And have you, yourself come across something like this? Also do you think I should check into it further? Thanks for your time in the matter. T
