1940 D Dime

Do you have a dime and want to know its value? Leave a comment

Some predict 2011 will see silver go for fifty dollars an ounce. I honestly did not think silver would hit thirty dollars an ounce in 2010. Predictions aside silver is always a good investment, I always liked it more than gold but not as much as platinum.

Finding a silver coin in my change happens once every year or two. Thanks to all the hoarders and roll hunters it becomes harder to find old American coins in decent condition. Finding this coin was a nice holiday treat.

This nice silver dime does not have the full torch lines. Full torch lines are when the vertical bands and horizontal bands are clear and you can see that each splits in half. This worn example only shows partial splitting. Full bands are worth much more and are the most desirable among collectors.

Also you can see the mintmark on the reverse after the word ONE. It is not ONED it is actually the Denver mintmark.

Here's the stats for this dime...
Type/Country: 10 Cents / United States
Year: 1940-D
Mintage: 21,198,000
Metal: 90% Silver, 10% Copper
Value: $2.66 in F-12 (a metal value of $2.66)

Let me add one more thing on the obverse of this coin is a W over an A to the right of the neck. Many people think it is a V or double V or something about World War II and victory. Nope, it is Adolph A. Weinman initials. He was the artist and sculptor who designed this coin.

Do you have a silver coin and want to know its value? Leave a comment / question and I will do my best to find out the price and history for you.

  1. Nice find, but doesn't the axe on the back stand for fascism?

No, it stands for power and the entire Fasces means strength in unity.

More likely during the time this coin was designed a huge Roman revival was going around and these are classic Roman symbols. It's a style choice.

  3. I picked one of these up at a coin show today, 1935 S. It was marked XF but I think it might be higher, can you tell me the grading points for these coins and/or values for the 1935 S?

Thanks in advance for your help.

XF would have the hair braid in full detail and only the highest point of the feathers will be worn. The reverse the diagonal bands visible, the other torch lines are fully visible but can be slightly worn.

AU would have only slight wear on the braid and wings. The reverse very slight wear on the small center horizontal band all other lines will show very little to no wear.

    XF about $5.00
    AU about $7.50
Of course value changes with silver prices.

  5. Hmm, this one seems to disagree with itself. On the obverse the wings and braid are worn fairly well, but the reverse shows all of the lines on the torch with only slight wear on the diagonal bands. Oh well I'm happy, it's a bargain anyway.

Sounds like the front is XF or lower and the back is AU or higher.
I guess they averaged it out to XF. Coins are not a perfect science.

  11. what is the difference between a Mercury dime and a Silver Liberty dime or Roosevelt dime?

  12. I have 49 liberty dimes from 1890 to 1942; and 1 1948 Roosevelt dime. I want to know what is considered Good condition compared to Fair and what is an Excellent condition coin. Most of coins are worn on the front but you can still feel the face, but can barely read date and the back still has dimension to it and writing and pics are very clear, but they have black in color. Is this a dirty coin and/or do they need to be cleaned.

    Roosevelt dime 1946 to date
    Mercury dime 1916 to 1945
Silver Liberty dime 1892 to 1916
Liberty Seared dime 1837 to 1891

    First never clean.
    Assuming good grade...
    1890 about $16.00
Virtually every coin from 1923-1964 is about $3.50 each except for 1923-S.
Other are worth more look out for 1916-D, 1921, 1921-D and anything pre-1916.

The W is not a mintmark but the designer initials. I wrote this in the post above...

If no mintmark on the back that means it is from Philadelphia it's about $2.50.

  18. I have 3 gold colored coins dated 1987, 1988, and 1991. They have a woman's face on the front with $1000 vertically to the left of her face. Underneath her, it says Juana De Asbaje. On the back of the coin, there is a large bird with a snake in it's mouth.

I also have several silver dimes dating from 1943-1964, a 1950 half dollar, and a 1935 silver quarter. Could you please tell me the value of these coins?

  20. I found an Indian head penny in an old chest...It is dated 1893. If you are looking at the front of the penny on a table and turn it over , the back of the penny is upside down..Is that the way they were made? It is a circulated penny. Thanks for any info.

About $3.00 when this coin is facing up and turned left to right the back should be upside down.

That is coin alignment and normal for all U.S. coins.
