Trying to catch up on some back log of change finds I will go through the boring ones a little quicker.
This is just an ordinary 1956 U.S. cent that has some damage. The damage is enough to be barely above metal value but hey it's something.
Here's the stat for a 1956 penny....
Year: 1956
Mintage: 420,745,000
Metal: 95% copper 5% tin and zinc
Value: G-4 $0.03
------VG-8 $0.05
------F-12 $0.08
------VF-20 $0.10
------EF-40 $0.12
------AU-50 $0.15
------MS-60 $0.25
------MS-63 $0.35
G-4 is worn with lines in the wheat head missing.
VG-8 has half of lines visible in upper wheat heads.
F-12 has wheat lines worn but visible.
VF-20 no worn spots on wheat heads.
EF-40 has slight overall wear, all details sharp.
AU-50 slight wear on cheek and jaw and wheat stalk.
MS-60 is no trace of wear, light spots, full details.
MS-63 no trace of wear, slight blemishes, red-brown color.
Note the value in all grades will not make anyone retire early.

I scanned it and can see a deep impression TSURT next to the TRUST a partial date running through Lincoln's head and up through the "W" in we, as well as other impressions through his jacket/shoulder. The coin itself is pretty rough looking, but still it is a curiosity.

ReplyDeleteThis sounds like a Die Clash error it is a common error and it generally has no extra value but often nice examples sells for about $1.00.

The administrator of that forum told me that someone put two coins together and smashed it with a hammer. I guess people do odd things, and I guess copper is softer than I thought it would be.

ReplyDeleteThis is possible which is why die clash coins are not valuable they are very easily faked.

So i was going thru my pockets and i found a 1956 penny. doe it have any value to it because i believe its real copper from the sound that it makes when i drop it on a table compared to a newer penny.......commnets please

The die crack error does not add any value, about $0.10.
I have a 1956D that seems to have a very high ridge around the coin. Is that standard for wheat pennys? It is tarnished but not worn.

Varieties on the rim is common, no extra value.

I identify them as a large cud over Lincoln's face(1956) and a possible fold over(1952) as the penny appears to have the indentation of another coin across the obverse. Is there any worth to these coins and can you identify them as error coins not altered coins ?

Any other weight may be a real error.
